I’ve been seeing this look all over recent J.Crew catalogs: shorts worn with a button down top and a cardi or blazer. I don’t wear shorts often (when I do, they’re walking shorts, which are really very different in my mind), but was presented with this pair by my mom upon my arrival home. I decided to make them work for me by academifying them to the nines with that signature J.Crew prep look.
Out came more J.Crew items, like this red-orange button down, creating an analogous color combination with the yellow-orange shorts. And to tone down the bold color of the top, I added a fitted jacket in a neutral navy.
The trouser cut of these shorts, along with all the small details, make these dressy enough to hold their own against the blazer and button down. I may not be quite ready to wear these to the classroom on a teaching day, but the look does feel polished enough for a day on campus or at the library. What do you think?
