The night before the wedding the we went to one of favorite old stomping grounds for dinner and micro-brew. Everyone arrived in town at different times and just showed up to the brewery to join our enormous table in the rooftop beer garden.  There was no need for a rehearsal so we all just enjoyed relaxed evening laughing, swapping stories, and  getting excited about the big day.

My mom and I did not coordinate our outfits, but clearly we were on the same wave length with our navy ensembles finished off with our strikingly similar  large brown totes.  I loved my mom’s little jersey cardigan paired with her cropped blue and white seersucker pants.  She was trendy but age appropriate.   We both wear blue well because it makes our eyes pop.  I get my blue eyes from both my parents, but you can clearly see I get my height from dad.

As it turned out A2 apparently also got the memo about navy being our pre-wedding color.

We laughed about our over-coordinated looks but I actually kind of loved it – we looked like a pair! She wore her navy button down and seersucker pants (which can’t tell from this picture) with reefs  for a casual laid back look that was still pulled together and fresh.

And, yes even my dad got the memo to wear blue – seriously all just a coincidence!

Both of my parents are brand loyalists.  A majority of my mom’s wardrobe comes from Talbots, including the beautiful black linen dress and blue linen jacket she wore for the actual wedding.  My dad is a true Ralph Lauren fan and owns a polo in just about every color and his wedding suit was also Ralph Lauren.  In the past, I have rarely found much from either of these companies (though A2 swears by Ralph Lauren with her own impressive collection of polos) but have recently been liking more and more from Talbots (more on that in a post to come).

Finally, dearest readers, thank you so much for the outpouring of well wishes and kind words.  It has been so much fun and incredibly heart warming to read all of the comments on the wedding post, so thank you all for adding to the incredible high I’ve been on all week!

Happy belated Thanksgiving!  This year A2 and I  hosted our first Thanksgiving.  We had both her family and my family in town, making for a total of 19 people at Thanksgiving dinner!
After several days of cooking and entertaining I am beat and need to spend today doing laundry, running errands, and catching up on school work.  Its all about comfort, warmth, and functionality today so I’ve gone for jeans, sneakers, and a my cozy wool peacoat.
Pink Sneakers, originally uploaded by academichic.
A few weeks back I asked for help finding jeans.  Advice poured in and I took notes! With a little encouragement I decided to buy the Gap men’s jeans and couldn’t be happier.  These are them with out alterations.  I am still planning to take the waist in but today am just wearing them with a belt.  I promise to post better pictures, as I have a feeling I will be wearing them rather often in the next few weeks.

I also looked into several of the suggested styles and wrote down the name of a few promising pairs to try on the next time I make it out to Nordstroms.  Thanks again for all the great jean advice!  I hope some of the comments helped you  in your jean shopping too.

Today I will meet my students for the semester.  I want to be sure to set myself  apart from undergraduates without being too overdressed in comparison to my fellow TAs.  The blazer, denim skirt, fun shoe combination seemed the perfect choice.

I have praised this old denim pencil skirt of mine many a times for its comfort, versatility, and chicness. I am now on the lookout for similar skirt to enter into the rotation and am looking forward to the slightly cooler weather when corduroy will be a more appropriate option.

I think the black blazer blazer gives this look a professional vibe while the fuchsia shoes hopefully signal to my students that I am the creative exciting TA.   I loved wearing these shoes with lime green and purple but think they really sing when paired with an all neutral ensemble.

I like the layers of black on black and think the varying textures give my monochromatic top-half some added visual interest and sophistication.  A.

18 August 2009 – Ode to S.

I  think split complimentaries is one of the hardest color schemes to pull off and I managed to make it more challenging by trying to wear it on a day when I needed to be office appropriate for a series of meetings.

The complimentary colors I am working with are yellow-green and red-violet but I have split the red-violet into pink (red) and purple(violet).  This is a whole lot of color for me – and bright color at that!

I am considering this color combination a little ode to S. on her two-week wedding anniversary.  I think she is the ultimate queen of bright colors, which she manages to mix in ways I would never think of but always look stunning on her.  Pink and purple are also S.’s  wedding colors and these fabulous pink shoes are the shoes I purchased for to wear for her wedding.

I think I plan to wear these shoes a lot and know that I will always think of S.’s special day when I do.  I think it is only appropriate that I premiere them as part of my regular wardrobe on a Tuesday!

Happy 2 week anniversary S. and T.! -A.

A2 and I are visiting family for an extra long weekend.  We arrived on Thursday night to a full schedule of activities, many of which I don’t partake of on a regular basis.  A family golf tournament was one of these!  My Dad is an avid golfer, so I think not too long after I learned to walk, I learned to swing a golf club.  While this doesn’t make me a pro by any means, I did hold my own in yesterday’s scramble.

I also am well versed in appropriate golf attire.  I don’t wear a polo very often these days but I always have a few well-fiting polos in various colors in my wardrobe.  I usually make it out for a round of nine holes about once a year with my dad and sisters and a collared shirt is required.  What items do you keep in your wardrobe for those once a year uses?

Special Note: Credit for the last two photos goes to A2′s brother J.  Thanks J.!

16 June 2009 – Rainy day bike ride

  • Black linen skirt – H&M
  • Pink pumps – Antonio Melani
  • Bangle – Big Lots
  • Wood and glass necklace – made by me
  • Umbrella – Totes, bought in San Fran last week b/c it called for rain (and then of course it didn’t rain at all)
  • Yellow vintage bag – Sears brand, Garage sale find

Endnotes:

As E. already mentioned, it’s been a rainy dreary day here in the Midwest. But I too had errands to run that had to happen today and all of which were in rideable distance from me. And since I’ve just been reunited with Nerp, I really did not want to use the car to get around town just because the weather had developed an anti-Nerp agenda this week. So I thought I’d be clever and time my departure between bursts of rain and off I went.

But of course the moment I got out the door, a slow and steady drizzle started that continued for my entire four mile ride. Oh well, I still enjoyed the fresh flowers, the scent of summer, the adrenaline from riding in the rain like a kid in total abandonment – and my helmet proved extremely helpful in providing frizz-control by shielding much of my hair from the rain.

While in Salzburg, I would see cyclists all the time who could ride one-handed in the rain while holding an umbrella in the other. Tell me, fellow cyclists, what do you do in the rain? I only pulled out the umbrella while walking between stops, but definitely could not pull the one-handed-bike-with-umbrella stint around traffic.

Now I’m snugly tucked away in a booth at a coffee shop and hoping for a second chance at timing my ride home. And while I’m sipping my delicious hot mocha, I get to enjoy this view of the storefront across the street. (Nerp is really smitten with that lovely be-flowered bike on display):

This week we’re not just picking shoes for their aesthetic appeal, but showing how you can still looks stylish while wearing practical and comfortable flat wear. I don’t believe that you have to wear running shoes in order to cover lots of ground and to walk comfortably (running shoes are for running in my wardrobe). There are lots of very stylish and attractive shoes out there that are made for comfortable commuting. Case in point: these pink ballet flats!  I have walked miles in these shoes!

Pale pink flats, originally uploaded by academichic.

They are just an inexpensive Target “Marona” pair that I bought years ago. They are leather and lent themselves very well to being broken in while walking all around campus. You can see that they are well worn by now but they are still very comfortable and have kept their shape. They spent a summer in France with me while I studied there and covered many many miles on my daily walk to campus, running errands around Tours, and being a tourist and walking all over Paris and surrounding areas. It was brutally hot that summer with most days well into the 90s and I mostly lived in knee length linen skirts like this one, tank tops, and these flats.

Pink Earrings made by me, originally uploaded by academichic.

For today’s outfit, I took the pale pink of the shoe and used it as an inspiration for the rest of the accessories, adding pale pink earrings and this pink flower brooch. Now I’m ready to walk to campus for a meeting and to the coffee shop where I’m meeting A. after her teaching today. S.

Last night, the fiance, T., and I went out to dinner and a show. For my “date night” look, I pulled out this classic black dress that I also wore on the first day of teaching (and in my first post here). A. and I both own this dress because we found it for a steal at the Banana Republic outlet. You can dress it down for day, or add some heels and make it fit for a night out on the town. I was also inspired by the lovely Jean C’est Quoi to wear a scarf around my waist as a belt, as she did in this picture just recently. If I had to pare down my wardrobe to just a few key items, this classic black dress would definitely be one of them, as well as some scarves, which can be worn in so many ways and always add some interest to any outfit.

Hope your Saturday night was a lovely one as well!

-S.
