E., a couple weekends ago, I am headed to an academic conference where I will present a paper, participate in a roundtable, meet with editors, and network with other scholars. However, I am traveling internationally and will be gone a bit longer so my spread is a bit bigger and the plan a bit more complicated! In addition to packing for more days, I have a few essential items that unfortunately take up a bit of room – namely my running shoes and blow-dryer and straightener. While I too prefer not to check bags whenever possible, I’m not going to attempt it for this trip. So, in addition to carefully packing my checked luggage, I have taken a few precautions in packing my carry-on bag.
The Preliminary Carry-On Spread (I tend to throw many a thing in at the last minute):
Yes, that is my straightener! I seriously would be devastated if it didn’t make it. I’ve also packed: face wipes- so I can do a quick refresh after the overnight flight; makeup and hair product- all other toiletries can be easily and cheaply replaced; and an emergency outfit plan (see below).
Now on to the real stuff!
The Spread:

Sometimes I plan out what I am going to wear the night before, often mentally going through my closet as I fall asleep. Other times I think about it while in the shower in the morning. These outfits are usually altered once I start physically pulling the items out of my closet but it gives me a place to start. This morning I was showered, hair and makeup done, half a pot of coffee consumed, 5 papers graded, and I still had no idea what I was going to wear.
I stared at my open drawer and this red-violet top poped out at me so I worked from there – thank you color wheel! I chose neutral pants and shoes because I wanted to look professional for a day of meetings and other campus events but checked the color wheel and saw that red-violet paired with blue-green, and yellow-orange make a triad. I threw on this turquoise necklace and had 2/3 of a triad (although one might argue the amber-brown in the necklace has yellow-orange undertones). The necklace led me to the cardigan of a similar color and voila I was dressed!

Does this look familiar? So yes, I’m essentially wearing what I wore yesterday – another Jersey-dress and Cardigan ensemble – but as the lovely Diana mentioned, it’s just such an easy way to achieve both comfort and style. This is a $12 clearance Target dress I just came across while shopping for dog food and paper towels.
I was thrilled to find it since it will make a great addition to my Year Abroad Packing List. It’s a solid and a neutral, so this item will go with anything. It can be dressed up or down with varying jewelry and accessories, and can be layered or not, for different temperatures. On to the mental To-Pack list it goes.
Tonight, I’m dressing it (somewhat) up with this print tie (from yesterday’s dress) and bold silver jewelry for the dinner with friends that e. mentioned, but am keeping it simple with boots and a cardi, in case we do end up sitting around that bonfire later on this evening. S.

I’m not angry today, as this photo might suggest, just exhausted…
Despite all the great looks featured in our color symposium, I was feeling less than inspired this morning so went rummaging through my scarf box looking for a way to spruce up this less-than-exciting ensemble. I used to be a big headscarf wearer - for a few years stretch I wore a scarf in my hair more often than not. My last batch of haircuts haven’t been as receptive to the scarf so I’ve had a box of little patterned gems just siting in my closet. Last week in a last ditch effort to follow the pattern module I pulled one out and threw it around my waist. Turns out I now have a box of fantastic belts – I think this might be a reoccurring look for me!

I had a pattern mix idea for today but the weather is just too lovely for what I had planed. I got this dress for Christmas from my little sister and have been dying to wear it ever since! It is probably a bit too dressy for teaching, meetings, and an afternoon at the coffee shop but that’s never stopped me before.
Before Christmas I coveted this dress for its beautiful print but also for the way the pattern is broken up by the bands of green – and my favorite shade of green at that. While I never need an excuse to sport this color, I am Irish and it is our day!

Today I am pulling off “Pretty in Pink” as professional. I have to administer a midterm exam to 150ish students — a rather panicked 150ish students (based on the email I received at 2:00 am this morning). Hopefully my light pink cardigan will sooth their nerves while my bright pinks will keep them on their toes.

I had planed to try an
analogous outfit made of warm colors but couldn’t resist my comfort zone today. These blues are certainly closer to green than purple on the
color wheel but this more yellowy-green makes this unquestionably analogous and not monochromatic. I considered wearing my
green shoes but it made the outfit feel a bit gimmicky. Instead, I finished the outfit off with one of my favorite pairs of earrings and and am feeling quite lovely in this color combination.

If
S.’s penchant for polka-dots is inspired by a Minnie Mouse obsession, perhaps this outfit is inspired by my childhood love of Superman. I had Superman tee-shits, costumes, action figures, limited edition prints, an awesome watch, etc! This
triad of red, blue, and yellow are not a color combination I have worn outside of my Superman tees and I have to admit I feel a bit like I belong in a comic book — yet, some how, not much like a superhero. -A.

This mostly purple outfit is my first attempt at our
analogous colors challenge. I’m worried it might be closer to monochromatic than analogous, but I wanted to feature my new tee. This is is the second of my
purposeful shopping purchases. I swear that sweater is maroon but putting it next to this lovely purple seems to have altered its color a bit. These are the wonders of the color wheel! -A.

Like E., I felt a little experimental trying to create a triadic outfit for this week’s Fashion 101 module. I kept pulling our different red, yellow, and blue pieces out of my closet but all the combinations just made me feel like a walking version of the Romanian flag. I am Romanian, but my patriotism only goes so far. Finally, I did come across this combination and actually felt very pleased with it. I love how the triadic combination does make all three colors pop equally against each other, but by keeping the red to a minimum with just the belt, I feel less like a walking advertisement for my native country and more like a graduate student. -S.
