Today’s outfit was totally inspired by my desire to wear argyle –
a preppy pattern I love but don’t actually wear that much anymore (except my ridiculous collection of argyle socks). The argyle print was one of the many reasons t
he birthday gift scarf from S. was so perfectly me! The lovely turquoise and olive diamond pattern reminded me of this old J Crew short-sleeved sweater.
When I first got this sweater years ago, I wore it all the time. However, as my style has shifted some, I’ve struggled with how to wear it in a way that still feels like me. So, I amped up the color palette and went a little layering crazy and ended up with this cozy
analogous spectrum of greens and blues, accented by what better than caramel corduroy!
What pattern do you love but struggle to work into your daily wardrobe?

After a busy weekend, during which I accomplished very little school work, I spent most of yesterday in sweats trying to get some writing done. We have discussed this questions of what to wear when working from home before. The three of us weigh in differently. I personally find a day in sweats every once in a while to be very productive – as was the case yesterday. After such days, however, I find myself dressing up a bit more than usual.
Today’s outfit are all pieces I have worn before but I made a few temporary alterations to make some of the items feel different. I pressed the collar of this ruffly green shirt inside to make a mandarin collar. My black cardigan is actually a black wrap sweater, but I tied the strings behind my back, under the sweater. I also hiked my skirt up a little and belted it. Just these little adjustments help make my closet more interesting to return to everyday.
How do you change up the look of an old standard?

I planned this outfit out last night so it is not at all influenced by S. and E.’s posts today… do these two know my style or what?! :)
It was such a nice surprise to check the site this morning and see birthday wishes from two of my favorite people!
I’m keeping this short because I am still celebrating, but thank you both for being such wonderful friends!
(birthday gift premieres coming soon…)

S. and I are paying homage to A-style today, and this is my interpretation of an A-worthy outfit. While S. riffed off of A.’s adept layering of ruffles under a cardigan, I’m playing with some of A.’s signature colors: shades of blue green. A. definitely knows how to work this color palette, and she always looks great in it.
A. has become my dearest friend in my department over the past few years and has helped keep me sane through some storms of academic drama. We work extraordinarily well together, whether we’re co-teaching a class, planning a lesson, curating an exhibition, or just tandem shopping. She’s a hard worker, incisive thinker, warm teacher, and supportive friend.
Happy birthday, A! Here’s to another year of impeccable style and fashion-forward feminism. Will you be premiering one of your birthday gifts today?

The weather is beautiful! Some of you have warned me not to wish cold weather here too soon, but I love the cool weather because I love corduroy, blazers, scarfs, boots and, of course, layers!
I am so excited to finally have the opportunity to wear this fabulous new scarf from Blue Onion Marketplace. The color is perfect and the texture and shine make it different from any of my other scarves. I think I will be getting a lot of wear out of this little piece.

A2 had car trouble on her way to work, so my morning routine was disrupted to say the least. I had to throw on something quick that I could be comfortable in all day, and even walk home in if need be (although on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I usually have a gym bag backed anyway). Mornings when I need to choose something quickly, when don’t have time to try stuff on, swap out one cami for another, or ponder the color wheel, I often go for an ensemble I have worn before. This morning, for some reason, I thought of this polo and my denim skirt which I wore back in July. I planed to wear the outfit exactly, but denim skirt was in the wash so it was swapped with my grey skirt, and I grabbed this rainbow bracelet instead of the green necklace worn as bracelet, creating the same layered-strand effect but adding a pop of pride!
I like this outfit but I think it makes me look a bit young, therefore it is not something I would usually wear to school. I am not teaching today, but I am meeting with students. Yesterday I wrote about
wearing the same thing as colleague and reader Sabrina raised the possibility of wearing the same thing as a student and I feel that in this outfit that is more likely to happen today than most. If it does happen, I’m sure I will laugh and simply compliment them on their fabulous style! A.

It is still much warmer here than I would like it to be and I am getting sick of my summer wardrobe! One of the easiest ways to remix clothing is in the layering, but as I have mentioned before, this is more difficult to do in warmer weather. Interesting color combinations are another great way to change the look of a remixed item. Yesterday I paired blue-green and red-orange for a casual complimentary color scheme, but in the end it was my layered neckline that I liked best about the outfit.
This got me thinking about ways to creatively layer pieces and to bring more interest to the neckline of some of my go-to knits. I love the pattern on this scarf, sent to me by the lovely Kimberly of Fab Finds Under $50, and have often thought how great it would be to have a skirt or blouse with this pattern on it. So, partially inspired by E.’s scarf tacked to cardigan from several months ago, I tucked this long rectangular scarf around the neckline of my shirt and used the belt to hold the ends in place. As I got dressed this morning, I was worried about the scarf slipping around all day, but so far, so good.
I love the ways this rather simple addition has drastically changed the look of this bright green top – the soft blue pattern makes for a more sophisticated palette, the scarf texture dresses the top up, and the new higher neckline adds to the level of professionalism.
Until I can pull out the fall wardrobe I am dying to get back into, it looks like a little creative thinking will be needed to extend the summer wardrobe. I’ll try out a few more scarfed looks and a few more layering tricks this week. What are your tricks for keeping your wardrobe fresh as the summer season drags on?

I think split complimentaries is one of the hardest color schemes to pull off and I managed to make it more challenging by trying to wear it on a day when I needed to be office appropriate for a series of meetings.
The complimentary colors I am working with are yellow-green and red-violet but I have split the red-violet into pink (red) and purple(violet). This is a whole lot of color for me – and bright color at that!
I am considering this color combination a little ode to S. on her two-week wedding anniversary. I think she is the ultimate queen of bright colors, which she manages to mix in ways I would never think of but always look stunning on her. Pink and purple are also S.’s wedding colors and these fabulous pink shoes are the shoes I purchased for to wear for her wedding.
I think I plan to wear these shoes a lot and know that I will always think of S.’s special day when I do. I think it is only appropriate that I premiere them as part of my regular wardrobe on a Tuesday!
Happy 2 week anniversary S. and T.! -A.

I have long been trying to get A2 to do a “Visiting Lecturer” post but it wasn’t until I told her I was inspired by her analogous color combination that she agreed to make an appearance. I love the triangle of bright green created by the layering of this Old Navy graphic tee under a Navy Blue polo and I think the slivers of green peeking out of her sleeves are perfect.

Jeans or chino pants with a polo or button-down comprise A2′s daily uniform, yet she continues to surprise me (and S. and E.) with brilliant color combinations and pattern mixing.
For my inspired outfit I am keeping the navy button down over a bright green layering piece paired with neutral bottoms, but I am attempting to pass this off as a triad. I figure if S. and E. can both cheat the color wheel a bit by exchanging blue-green for green in their orange-purple-green triad, then I can swap navy for blue-violet in my blue-violet, red-orange, yellow-green triad!
I promise to try a true triad before moving on to next weeks color challenge of monochromatic and split complimentaries.
Enjoy your weekend! -A
