Pattern Mixing Symposium: Fashion 101 Modules Put Into Practice By You

May 8th, 2009 § 8 comments §

After the wonderful submissions for our Color Symposium, we decided to ask readers to submit examples of outfits they created using our Fashion 101 Playing with Pattern. Once again we received many great submissions and have definitely been inspired by all of your fabulous pattern mixing!

Here are some of our favorites:

The lovely Kasmira of What I Wore Today sent us several great outfits to pick from. This one wins our vote for both pattern and color mixing!

Loyal reader, Diana of Simple Elegance, mixed multiple patterns and textures but kept it chic by using all cool blues with classic black and white. Beautiful!

We adore the analogous color play in this submission from Danielle of Just My Style. She makes stripes and florals look like the were designed for each-other!

This lovely blue pattern mixing comes from Clare of Between Laundry Days. This is just one of a week’s worth of fabulous pattern mixing from Clare.

We love this beautiful ensemble from reader, Kristen. The floral belt worn as obi and the bit of lace (yes, we count that as a pattern) peaking out make this plaid dress look so sophisticated.

Lovely reader, AJ, sent us this great look. We love the playful mix of pattern and color and this she looks fabulous.

The adorable Andrea of A Cat of Impossible Color sent us incredible mix of all thrifted patterns. The black base in each of the pieces pulls these bold prints together beautifully.

Finally, in true academic fashion, a late but fabulous submission came from Camille of I Get Dressed. We love how she boldly mixed the ruffles and polka-dots with a stripped floral skirt.

Thanks again for all the great submissions. We had so much fun seeing how all of you have been experimenting with pattern and, once again, found ourselves truly inspired!

Color Symposium: The Color Modules put into Practice by You

March 23rd, 2009 § 4 comments §

A couple weeks back we asked readers to submit examples of outfits they created using the Fashion 101 color modules. We received some great submissions and have definitely been inspired by all of your great color combinations!

Here are some of our favorites:

Kayla paired a bright pink henley with a more subdued blue cardigan for a great Two-Thirds ensemble. We love it with the plaid pants!

Another great Two-Thirds look came from the lovely Bella with her mix of bright green with purple. Once again we were quite inspired by the addition of a pattern to this color combination.

Our favorite monochromatic ensemble comes from Jess, who kept it simple and elegant in shades of grey. Plus we are all impressed that she designed and made this great dress herself!

Kayla also sent us the best complete Triad color combination. We love the way she makes red, yellow, and blue look so sophisticated.

Last, but certainly not least, Courtney put together a fantastic “neutrals with a pop” look. She paired this lovely orangey-red with shades of black and brown as part of her “Farewell to Winter Tour.”

CFP Deadline Extension

March 7th, 2009 § 0 comments §

Yesterday I received an extension on something with an original deadline of today. To be honest, I hadn’t even started working on the submission because I knew the strong likelihood of an extension. So, in true academic fashion, we are extending our CFP deadline for another week (new deadline is Sunday, March 15).

We challenge you to spend some time with the color wheel and try out a new color scheme. If you are still hesitant about a triad or a split complimentary experiment with neutrals by adding a pop of color or test out a monochromatic look. Just snap a picture and send it our way. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

For details, check out the original CFP: The Color Modules Put Into Practice By You

Thanks for the emails and comments so far. We love hearing about and seeing what all of you are doing with color!

CFP: The Color Modules put into Practice by You

March 1st, 2009 § 4 comments §

Dear readers,

Some of you have left comments saying that you were inspired by our Fashion 101 color modules to create ensembles of your own that put a new spin on the color wheel. We loved experimenting with the modules because it lent us fresh eyes with which to approach our wardrobes. We left our comfort zones and our go-to outfits behind and tried to get more mileage out of our closets by remixing items in new and color-driven ways.

Now we’re ready to be inspired by you. Were you following along and applying some of the color theories we presented to your own looks? We would love to see what you did to create outfits according to any of the four color modules we have presented over the past four weeks. In the spirit of academia, we would love to spread the knowledge of how (color) theory becomes practice by featuring some of your photos on our site.

If you would like to submit something, send us an email with your picture and a few words about the look and which module you were inspired by. Thank you! We’re looking forward to seeing your looks! Click below to send your submisions by Sunday, March 8, 2009!

Pregnant Style Bloggers: Recap

February 14th, 2009 § 3 comments §

About a month ago I posted our first “Call for Papers,” wondering if the blogosphere could point me towards any pregnant style bloggers who could provide help and inspiration in the upcoming days of my burgeoning belly. I’m glad I asked, because you all introduced me to:

picture005

Allie over at My Wardrobe Today cataloged her truly impressive range of pregnant office-ready looks. She works the basics so well and provides a fantastic example of how accessories can extend a maternity wardrobe.

Madam0wl also shared her set of pregnancy style photos over on Flickr. This woman can layer. I am also a big fan of these subtle plaid pants. So many maternity style websites insist on you buying basics, but madam0wl has convinced me that I need a patterned trouser of some kind in my preggers wardrobe.

Finally, the super-fabulous midoritsuru also has a fantastic pregnancy style set on Flickr. She layers, she mixes patterns, and she rocks wonderful color combinations. I love this funky mama look!

Thank you to those who suggested sources! We’ll have another CFP up soon and will follow each one with a recap featuring your responses.

CFP*: Pregnant Style Bloggers?

January 20th, 2009 § 16 comments §

Since I began a baby bump and helped start this blog at roughly the same time, I’ve been fairly obsessed with trying to find stylish pregnant ladies to be my pregger fashion muses. With S. and A.’s help, I’ve found a few:

Of course Tricia, from Bits and Bobbins, Wardrobe Remix’s fearless leader. Then there’s the fashionable Spanish mama who continues to rock skinny jeans over at My Daily Style. And perhaps lesser known…

Juicy Juice, originally uploaded by freespiritjenny.

The spunky and colorful Freespiritjenny.

i will be that little glowing tree, originally uploaded by steen ink.

And how I wish the lovely SteenInk would have been able to post more of her wonderfully layered pregnancy looks.

But I’m wondering if there are more that I’m missing? There seems to be a preponderance of maternity fashion “advice” blogs — answering specific questions, pointing to celebrity styles, or recommending particular generic outfits — but I’d love to see how real, stylish ladies navigated the day-to-day of dressing a rapidly changing body. Do share.

* We get e-mails every single day with CFP’s or “Calls for Papers” from conferences on every topic imaginable soliciting 20 minute presentations from the academic masses. (Unfortunately, we still haven’t gotten one on academia and style.) When we do a CFP here, we’re asking for your contribution of internet-knowledge, no 10 page paper required. Just a few words or a link will do!
