Dress Your Best 2011!

10 May 2010 - In Which I Come to Terms with My Long Torso Eyes 10 May 2010 - Dressing My Waist

We are so excited to be reintroducing one of our favorite “challenges” at Academchic: Dress Your Best Week. In order to spread out the love, we’ll be hosting DYB for the next two weeks, and we hope that many of you will play along.

Particularly in the midst of shorts, tank top, and swimsuit weather, we often focus on minimizing parts of our bodies or downplaying characteristics that we don’t like or feel self conscious about. Do my thighs look big in these shorts? Does this shirt show my wobbly arms? Do these jeans make me look short? Does that swimsuit conceal my midsection? In order to bend our minds in another direction, we are purposely setting out to get dressed with the intent of to showing off our best – big or small chests, eyes, hips, lips, legs, arms, freckles, you name it – rather than minimizing our worry spots.

This idea all came about two years ago during a Fashion 101 on Proportion and was a big hit last year with many fellow bloggers participating as well.

For the next two weeks — June 20 – July 1 — it will be Dress Your Best weeks 2011 at academichic.com. Intrigued? Want to participate? What body parts do you love, no matter how big or small? Have great legs? Fantastic ankles? A graceful neck? Please leave a comment on this post telling us that you’ll be dressing your best, and we will also have chances for you to link directly to your blog or send us your pictures for our “Round Up” series at the end (see Round Ups 1, 2, and 3 from last year). Please click below for more info about getting involved!

We’re inviting you to dress your best with us! If you’d like to participate on your own blog and be linked to other bloggers who will also be dressing their best, follow these simple steps.

  1. Leave us a comment letting us know that you want to be a part of Dress Your Best week. We’ll add your blog to a master list of participants which will be posted on academichic.com.
  2. Write down a list of body parts that you love. We’ll be aiming for five apiece, but pick what seems right for you. You can look at some of the great lists that we received last year for inspiration.
  3. During the weeks of June 20 – July 1, 2011, dedicate at least one post on your own blog to an outfit that you’ve built around one of your favorite body parts. Explain why you love that part of you and how your outfit complements it.
  4. Link back to this post on academichic.com and, if you wish, download the banner or badge below and include it in your Dress Your Best posts to let your readers know about this week long effort.

We look forward to hearing from you!

- The Chics

If you could give one of your body parts a gold star, which one would it be? Better yet, which five? Download this banner or badge to include in your posts the next two weeks and let everyone know you’re dressing your best.

  1. Em says:

Love it–anything that helps women celebrate their beauty and to focus on what they like about themselves is a wonderful thing! Looking forward to reading these!

  2. I loved reading this series last year and now I have a blog and would love to join in on the positivity!

  3. Ris says:

I love reading Academichic and will definitely be participating in Dress Your Best 2011!

  4. PF says:

I’ve always hated my legs but recently in the last year, I’ve been riding a stationery bike and they are looking pretty good! As a result, I’ve been wearing skirts 3-4 times a week.
My all-time favorites are my full, plump lips – they will be there when I’m old; and, my thick black course hair that’s not-so-course anymore and a bit speckled with gray throughout – I will never be bald.

  5. poet says:

This is a great idea. I’d love to participate, let’s see if the lousy weather in Southern Germany lets me :)

  6. Katie says:

I’d love to be added to the list- this is a fantastic way to celebrate our bodies!

  7. Cara says:

Count me in! I’ll even start today!!

  8. Count me in! I too loved reading these posts last year, and loved seeing what a difference it can make to dress to ‘highlight’ rather than ‘hide’ – plus I’ll take any excuse to brag about my own traffic-stopping hotness. :)

  9. I want to play too!

  10. Nancy says:

I’ve been following your blog for quite some time and wanted to participate in this challenge. Please add me to your list. If I hate to pick my worst part of my body it would have to be my short legs, but lately I haven’t cared too much and love having the extra outfits when I wear skirts and dresses.

  11. Cynthia says:

Count me in! I’ll work some body part posts in over the next week or two!

  18. Miranda says:

I’m not a blogger, but I am inspired by this challenge! I’m an academic whose typical vacations (to places like London or Paris) keep me in-step with my normal style, but in the next week I’ll be taking a tropical vacation that will push me to wear things outside my comfort zone (bikinis, shorts, maxi dresses). Thank you for urging me to try these things in a way that helps me focus on the things they help me to highlight, rather than the things I don’t want exposed!

  19. Count me in! I’m spreading the word to my friends as well!

  20. Lola says:

I would love to participate! I think this would be a great but positive challenge for me. What an amazing idea!
