16 May 2011 - Spring Tights

Really? Tights in spring? Tights in the middle of May?! Yes folks, sad but true. The daffodils are blooming, fruit trees have burst into fluffy balls of white flowers, and my allergies are going haywire (pun intended), but the chill is not out of the air some days where I am. I had sworn off wearing tights after spring break, mostly because my waist and stomach were tired of being constricted like that, but I had to give in and break them out on Friday last week. To really feel sorry for myself I started to look back at when other bloggers around the country had packed up their winter tights for the year.

The ever hip and stylish Clare of Between Laundry Days was still wearing tights (or at least posting tight-ed outfits) in April, but has recently been enjoying sunshine and nylon-free gams.

The oft-skirted and always adorably dressed Tanya of What Would a Nerd Wear decided to freeze her kneecaps one particularly cold spring day, but she hasn’t donned tights in weeks (just look back at her recent posts!). Even my lovely co-bloggers out in academichic central were ditching their tights back in early April!

However, I do have a (reluctant) tights companion in the artistically photographed, well dressed and hilarious woman behind Hello, Monkeyface!, who also paired spring florals with tights this month, and the queen of color combos, Audi of Fashion For Nerds, also sported some firey red tights recently. Thank goodness! I really was starting to feel sorry for myself (wink wink)

On the flip-side, the always thoughtful and encouraging (and well heeled!) Sally at Already Pretty lined up some great ideas for how TO cover up even when it is warm out.

How have you been keeping warm during the mud season between winter and spring? Do you have a cut-off point for some wintery items that you refuse to wear after a certain date or season change?

Thank you, beautiful, for the sweet shout-outs! Hope it warms up for you soon. Tights this late in the season … grrrr.

  2. Clare says:

Aw, thank you for your very kind shout-out!! So sweet. And I’m sad to say that it’s PLENTY cold enough for tights today. I’m resisting by wearing pants, but I may have to bust them out tomorrow. :-(

But I love your outfit, especially the flat oxfords!

I’m in the mid-Atlantic and it’s supposed to be quite warm (although rainy) this week. I’m definitely going with the bare legs. I only recently started paying more attention to fashion, and wore alot of tights this past winter. Thanks to you and all of the other fashion bloggers I follow, I now actually feel more comfortable wearing tights in the spring whereas I never would have before. So even though I feel for you having to bundle up in tights in mid-May, I’m grateful that my outlook on tights has changed so much!

Perfect timing on this post. I was just eyeing one of the sweaters I’ve been wearing all winter because it’s cold and cloudy here too. I don’t have specific dates for my clothes because the weather here is so unpredictable, 88 degrees four days ago, 50′s today. I’m not crazy about tights, so pants are my default item when it’s cold.

I do like how you made the outfit look springy by wearing that cute floral skirt. Just the inspiration I need to break out of my ‘no tights’ mood.

You are too generous, L.! Of course I feel you on the May tightsness. We are straddling the degrees between tights and bare leg weather here so I am feeling thrilled whenever I have the opportunity to be a part-time nylon-free skirt wearer. At least the pair your wearing is a lovely, shiny neutral grey! That complemented with purple makes me happy :)

  6. BL says:

I live in the cold, dark North where we had 45 degree, rainy weather earlier last week. Needless to say, I’m still wearing tights too! It’s discouraging to wear winter clothes, however, so I just layer my lighter, brighter spring clothing so it’s warm. And I wear a lot of floral prints.

In the Southern hemisphere here, but it sounds like we’re having similar weather. I’m wearing some lighter coloured tights and also nude fishnets which are a bit more breathable but still covering up my pasty, slightly hairy legs.
