End Notes:

Due to baby sitter illness, little e. and I got to spend an unexpected day together, and I thought I’d finally show you what’s been my defacto weekend/casual day uniform for the past few weeks.

I loved every single outfit that Tania of What Would a Nerd Wear made using her striped red shirt during this last round of 30 for 30, so when I saw this tank at Target I grabbed it, knowing that I already had a great source of inspiration for remixing it. Previously, red stripes would have made me feel a little too “Where’s Waldo”-ish, but I’m currently fancying a little bit of a geek chic aesthetic and they fit in perfectly here with cuffed jeans, sensible shoes, and a literal necklace. All I really need is a pair of black rimmed glasses, right?

Hipster E

Thanks, digital technology.

I actually don’t wear glasses at all, and in undergrad I went through a brief stage where I fretted that people weren’t taking me seriously as a “smart girl” because I had good eyesight. Thankfully, I got over that, and now I’m sure ocular degeneration will occur on its own in good time anyway. That said, I’m also fairly sure that my husband — who is a bonafide geek — will read this and reprimand me for terming it “geek chic” since I clearly fall squarely in the nerd realm. And no, little e. doesn’t even stand a chance.

But at least he still laughs when his mom dances.

I would buy that necklace RIGHT now were it not for “comprised of.” I try not to be too prescriptivist, but sometimes I just can’t bear certain usages, and that’s one.

You are such an inspiration! After “Belt Week” I have now gone into my usual stores and spotted two that I MUST OWN! You’re also making me really jealous that I’m waiting on acceptance letters from law schools and fall to come around (icky Florida summers) so I can run wild with the things I’ve learned from you! I also suggested the blog to my Best who is a doing her masters in VA and she loved your style too! Thank you!!

This is awesome! As soon as I saw the title in my RSS – thought YES!!!

My boyfriend and I were talking about the difference between “nerd” and “geek” just a couple of nights ago while watching The Big Bang Theory. What timing!

E, does that C&C blazer hold up well? I’ve seen you utilize it multiple times on the blog, and I’m considering getting one but even at the sale price am hesitant. I want to make sure that it’ll last through many washing machine cycles. I think they had the color you own as “faded black” on the site and it’s sold out now :( but I really want to invest in a semi-structured piece that has got some give…

  5. thanks for the shout out :) actually, i am wearing my red stripeys right now (with sweatpants in my kitchen so not nearly as fashionable as you). i agree that they evoke a certain nerd-chic (geek-chic?) which can be super charming, esp. when paired with digitally-added glasses.

I love your casual day uniform :) And, like you, I was totally troubled that I had gone through 25 years of my life with perfect eyesight. I thought, “I’m nerdy, I should have glasses to confirm my nerdiness.” Years and years of reading in dim lighting did NOTHING for me. But grad school did. After 3 months of grad school, I NEEDED to get glasses.

    ahahah, i love that necklace.

Obviously you look great, E, but this comment is definitely more serious. Tsunami. I hope all of your Hawai’i clan is okay…

Thanks, Laura. My family is fine. They do not live in an inundation zone, so they did not have to evacuate. The waves caused some property damage, but there have not been reports of injuries. I appreciate your concern!
