End Notes:

Today, my supervising professor observed my classroom. I’m comfortable enough now with my teaching that I wasn’t really nervous per se, but I still wanted to pull out a couple of my secret wardrobe confidence-instilling tricks.

Namely:

  • One, mixing edgier accessories (peacock tights! booties! a double buckle belt!) with a fairly classic and staid silhouette and color palette
  • And two, wearing a skirt with movement.

What is it about skirts that flutter or swish or bounce? I I love the way that such garments channel and transform my own movements. Maybe it’s because I feel like they lend me more presence? That they emphatically echo my energy? Or…maybe it’s just because they’re fun. In any case, since I move around a lot when I lecture, a skirt with some kick — like this one with its inverted box pleats — makes an otherwise ho-hum straight khaki skirt a whole lot more interesting, without screaming: “Look at me! I’m a fabulous skirt!”

Tell me I’m not alone in my skirts-with-movement adoration?

Nope, you are not alone. I love a skirt with movement and swish…

  2. Linda says:

What a great outfit to wear for observation. You look professional, but show off your personality.

  3. Terri says:

Yes, I like skirts with movement! But just now, I am admiring the grey tee. I had to abandon one from my 30/30 selections for a last minute bleach stain. :(

  4. Bettina says:

I love this outfit. Simple and sophisticated, but with a bit of a twist. Great!

  5. So sophisticated yet fun. And I think every girl loves a skirt with swish – my very favorite ones when I was little were the skirts in which I could do a good twirl.

  6. Kate says:

    I love that skirt.

  7. JP Thompson says:

I love “swooshy” skirts, but not the ruffles that so often are on the skirt. Your inverted box pleats are the perfect solution!

  8. Diana says:

I love swishy skirts! Trumpet skirts are the best – I can’t wait for them to come back into style. Plus, I think you can pair them with almost any top and shoes – something about the fitted top part of the skirt and the flared bottom is incredibly, universally flattering.

  9. Kellie says:

Perfect! Love the detail of the skirt and the booties.

  10. Rachael says:

I love that skirt! What a great look.

  11. You are definitely not alone.

I take it the observation went well?

  12. Beth Ellen says:

The swishier the skirt the better! Earlier this week I was wearing a skirt I can easily twirl in and I road the elevator up and down while spinning just to see how dizzy I can make myself. No, I’m not 5, but sometimes it’s fun to act like it.

  13. Clare says:

Oh man, skirts with movement are the best! They’re such confidence-boosters. And I ADORE the pops of badassery in this outfit.
