I started with my new favorite summer color combo of blue, white, and red and added this yellow bangle as a necklace (an idea stolen from E.). As I’ve said before, the triadic color combo of red-blue-yellow reminds me of a superhero costume and I think the large open circle on my chest reads a bit like a superhero crest. I needed some superhero powers today as I turned in my prospectus draft and headed to campus for a series of meetings.
The fabulous red espadrilles recently made their way into my closet from S.’s. She bought these shoes a couple summers ago and wore them a few times (also in a red -white-blue combo) bu in the end decided they where a bit too big on her. I’m worried they might be a bit too small on me but will test them out for a while before I decide. I do think they helped the superhero look!
It think what makes me feel most put together and confident in my appearance is a good hair day. I’ve written about this a few times, but the gist is: I have never dyed or permed my hair but I straighten it most days of the week. Now, courtesy of Misikko, I have a professional flatiron to use on my hair. Misikko sent me this Hana Elite 100% Ceramic Flatiron to review and I can honestly say I love it. I chose the thinner (1″) model because I have short hair. However, I have also noticed that the thinner iron gives me a bit more control over the shape of my hair, allowing me to curl the ends under for example.
I’ve had the flatiron for a few weeks now and have been using it regularly. I just haven’t managed to snap a picture before heading out into the extreme humidity these past few weeks have brought to Academichic Central. I have had my hair trimmed in the time, however, and my hairdresser is very happy with me that I am finally using a professional iron instead of the cheap one I was letting fry my hair. The Hana Elite isn’t cheap but I’m happy to say it is worth the investment.
What about you? Does a good hair day start your day off right? What do you do to make a good hair day happen? Are you a straightener? A curler? A dyer? Or a no-’pooer?

I love those red wedges! I’ve been thinking of getting a professional hair straightener but just haven’t decided on one. My cheap one snags my hair sometimes, which I don’t like. I use the straightener a bit most days of the week even though I don’t need it. I also have never died my hair, but have this urge to just try it. And then I remember I don’t want to have grow out roots, so I stick with my god given hair color. :)
I feel like a superhero today too in my outfit. I think it was the belt and yellow shirt together.

I sometimes straighten my hair but mostly a good blow dry leaves it pretty straight.
I’m a redhead too and only ever dyed my hair once in high school (burgundy and didn’t turn out well).
I have done no poo before and am doing it again this summer. Sometimes it leaves my hair looking so soft and shiny while others it looks really dirty and greasy. Its really 50/50 sometimes with my hair and I’m not sure why.
Hair? What hair?
I had dreads and decided that 7 years was enough so I now sport a low do (so much easier ot handle in this Caribbean weather), will colour soon. I’ll also be doing a no poo in a couple of months when I let it grow out.
You look like a superhero indeed!
Your hair looks beautiful!
I have heavy bangs AND wavy-ish hair, so I usually blow-dry every time I wash, which I’m sure is terrible for my hair…
What a wonderful blog! I’ve just stumbled upon you via What I Wore and I’m so happy I did.
Straighten? Curl? Dye? What is this you speak of? Some days are good hair days and some aren’t, but I have absolutely no control over that whatsoever. I have hair that is too curly to straighten chemically or physically, and too brightly red to dye without very weird results. Some days I like it. Most days I hate it (everyone else loves it but they don’t get an opinion because it’s not their hair). In the end, though, it is what it is and all I can do is condition well and make sure I hire the right people to cut it.
I’m still doing the no-’poo, I have since the beginning of the year, and I have super curly hair. I’m still loving the results, I’ve also used silicone-free conditioners and it still feels nice and smooth. I do use a pretty strong gel to style it, but it ends up looking better the second and third days that way.
In the summer, my stylist gives me layers so I can go wavy and not blow-dry. This only works when it’s humid though! On those days I just use two Aveda products for curl.
The other 8 months of the year, I use a great CHI straightening iron and a souped-up Babyliss dryer. I never realized what a difference the blowdryer makes: my hair is sleeker and shinier and stays straighter all day.
I’m a straightener but also try to be a no’pooer. I swim so I use a gentle no soap ‘poo from Kiss My Face a few times a week after I get out of the pool. Other than that, I rinse, condition, and coat with silicone to get it straight. A weird tip I learned from my hair guy- stick your head in the freezer right after you straighten to “lock in” the straight style. Going from hot to cold quickly sets the style. I find it keeps my hair straight and shiny for the whole day.
Love the outfit and the hair. When my hair frizzes up (especially the bangs) due to rain or humidity, it does affect my mood/self esteem unfortunately. : (
This outfit is way cute. You are one of the few people I’ve seen look totally polished and sleek in a straight skirt with pockets.
Many congratulations on the prospectus draft! What a huge hurdle. Super powers, indeed. Hopefully you won’t have to do the six my adviser made me go through before he gave the okay.
When I came to AC this morning, I thought, “Oh, great hair!” and “I wonder if she uses a flatiron.” Because in the last 4 months, I have discovered the wonders of flatirons, and am so happy with my hair these days too. So I can def relate!!
I love the necklace.
