Endnotes:
That’s right, I said “school’s IN for summer!” Yesterday I started teaching a 5 week summer course that meets every morning. Part of me is actually looking forward to be back on campus everyday and I’m really excited to be teaching this course. I’m also quite happy to have an excuse to pull out my professional wardrobe again, but I think creating 25 professional outfits appropriate for the extreme heat of June in Academichic Central will likely be a tough challenge.
Luckily, I now have the perfect summer school bag! Last week I received this beautiful Troubadour Tote courtesy of Crystalyn Kae. I love the slouchy but refined shape of this tote and adore the pleats and rivets. It actually comes in a variety of great colors but I’ve been looking for a bag to replace my reddish brown tote, which broke last year.

Inside the bag, originally uploaded by academichic.- a tiny make-up pouch that holds cover-up, chap-stick, mini-sunscreen, bobby pins, and a hair band (not pictured)
- my new i-phone pouch from pomella on etsy – I love the vintage green fabirc, the pocket for my headphones, and the bright green band that holds everything in place
- a small zipper pouch of campus essentials that holds, among other things, a laser pointer, adapters for my laptop, pens, post-its, band-aides, hand lotion, gum, etc
- my incase neoprene laptop sleeve

That bag is gorgeous! If only it were not prohibitively expensive, I would snap one up in a second.
I feel for you; my ankles started sweating at the mere thought of leaving climate controlled-spaces when I was living in the Midwest.
As a PhD student who also teaches courses, I would love to switch to a more professional and stylish laptop bag, but my back and shoulders are reluctant to give up my ergonomically-correct Ivar backpack on my .5 mile walk to campus. How do you avoid shoulder and back pain, especially when combining the one-shoulder bag with heels?
love this outfit!
I love the brown accents in this outfit. You’re looking professorial indeed. Enjoy your summer class.
So chic! Love your use of color here.
Great mix of colors! I’m looking forward to the following 24 chic summer campus outfits :)
I love your bag, it is fab. I am also loving this outfit, am looking forward to seeing the others.
You look incredibly chic. Love the mix of neutrals, and the ruffles with the low-slung belt.
the tank is my fave!
I love that outfit. You’re right that dressing for teaching in the summer is a challenge. I wear a lot of cotton skirts with short-sleeve blouses.
This is the first summer in several that I haven’t had to face the challenge of dressing professionally for teaching in the extreme heat and humidity. I usually wore a lot of lighter jersey fabric dresses, cotton skirts, and sleeveless or short-sleeved blouses. I also had to carry a cardi with me as most of the buildings on campus are kept freezing during the summer months.
That bag is gorgeous!
I knew that was a Crystalyn Kae bag from the first picture. I own a Troubadour Tote too and its amazing. It hold everything, its super stylish and light to carry!!
I love the tank! I looked for it on the JCrew website and couldn’t find it–any tips on tracking it down? Thanks!
Wah – I love this tank to and have worn it so much since receiving it in Christmas. I also just bought on sale in white! You can find it here:

Thank you, thank you! This was so comprehensive and perfect. My overly large collection of bags contains next to none are in neutral colours, and while I love the purples and teals and greens, I think I may need to branch out in the neutrals.
Also many thanks for the links to Crystalyn Kae’s bags, as well as pomella.
On sale is even better! Thanks a bunch. I’m enjoying your blog.
I’d love it if you guys did a post about bag options for people in academia/students. I’m a non-20something aged student who is working on an undergrad degree and I’ve had difficulty finding a bag that meets my fairly basic criteria.
I’ve been looking for something that’s not a backpack, that will hold my notebook and 1-2 textbooks (or my laptop), and various gear I need for classes. I’m a science major, so I’ll be regularly carrying around random kinds of safety equipment (goggles, lab coat, etc).
Right now, I’m using a basic black canvas laptop briefcase, but I’m concerned that won’t work as well as I need it to in the fall.
I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions of bags that aren’t backpacks, look cute, and won’t fall apart halfway through the semester!
What a sophisticated outfit and lovely bag!
