Last night, a little before midnight, I submitted a draft of my dissertation proposal to my dissertation reading group. It’s full of typos, ellipses, incomplete footnotes, and sketches of ideas, but it’s a draft!
My look-into-the-horizon-hero-pose that appears in both these pictures was unconscious but may say more about how I feel today then I realized. After a couple days in sweatpants in which I mostly left the house for coffee and bad-for-me food, it suddenly feels amazing to have “real” clothes on. Today I plan to take my car to the shop, send my little sister a package, mail the giveaways, do laundry, and meet some friends for a run – nothing all to exciting, but I find that whenever I submit a paper, take an exam, or finishing a pile of grading I emerge ready to reclaim my previous life as a human being. Each time I vow to not let school work shut out house work, exercise, family time, etc and I am getting better with the years of practice, but maybe one day in sweats with too much coffee and junk food and too many dirty dishes, only makes me appreciate structured clothes, fruit, and the dishwasher all the more!

Congrats! It’s always nice to emerge fresh from the craziness. I like how this outfit is casual even without jeans (I have a hard time wearing non-jeans in my casual wear).

Somehow, though, my house gets miraculously clean when I have work to submit. Grading to finish? Time to clean the bathroom! :)

Many congrats on handing in a draft prospectus! That’s a big step and I hope that you celebrate and enjoy. After this, it pretty much writes itself. (OK, not exactly, but having the map sure helps with the direction).

Congrats on sending in the prospectus draft! It’s so stressful to plan the next year or so of your life, but it feels marvelous when you have it all out on paper. Hope you enjoy the “life” day :)
Congrats on submitting a draft!!! Seriously, quite the accomplishment. There’s a lot of that going on around here, too, and I can feel everyone’s stress levels dropping after they hand something in.
Congratulations on completing the draft! I couldn’t agree more on your point – even a single day of existing as a sedentary recluse makes me appreciate blow-dried hair, make-up, and a decent outfit. You look great! Enjoy reclaiming your former life ;)
