Coming Soon: Dress Your Best Week!

May 4th, 2010 § 94 comments

So often, our focus when getting dressed in the morning is how to minimize or downplay aspects of our bodies that we’re just not crazy about. Does this skirt smooth my hips? Does this top hide my tummy? Do these pants make my thighs look slimmer?

But what would happen if you inverted that thought process? What if, instead of dressing to mitigate your so-so, you dressed to highlight the parts of your body that you love most? What if, for a whole week, you committed to self-consciously dressing your best bits?

When we tried this experiment last year, all three of us were surprised by how empowering such a simple mental switch could be. E. dressed for her baby bump. A. dressed for her calves. S. dressed for her hair. Although our outfit choices may not have changed that much visibly, the act of getting dressed and articulating why we chose what we did had a significant psychological and emotional effect. And so we want to try this again, and we want you to join us.

May 10-14 will be Dress Your Best week 2010 at Intrigued? Want to participate? Click through the jump for more information!

We’re inviting you to dress your best with us! If you’d like to participate on your own blog and be linked to other bloggers who will also be dressing their best, follow these simple steps.

  1. Send us an e-mail or leave a comment letting us know that you want to be a part of Dress Your Best week. We’ll add your blog to a master list of participants which will be posted on on May 10.
  2. Write down a list of at least five body parts that you love, no matter how big or small. Have great legs? Fantastic ankles? A graceful neck? You can look at some of the great lists that we received last year for inspiration.
  3. During the week of May 10-14, 2010, dedicate at least one post on your own blog to an outfit that you’ve built around one of your favorite body parts. Explain why you love that part of you and how your outfit complements it.
  4. Link back to this post on and, if you wish, download the banner or badge below and include it in your Dress Your Best posts to let your readers know about this week long effort.
  5. Starting on May 10, check out our master list of participants and take the time to be inspired by other bloggers who are choosing to dress their best rather than minimize their worst.

We look forward to hearing from you!

-  The Chics

If you could give one of your body parts a good ol’ grade school gold star, which one would it be? Better yet, which five? Download this banner or badge to include in your posts next week and let everyone know you’re dressing your best.

  1. EE K says:

Sounds fantastic! I would love to participate!

  2. Great idea! I like how you’re returning to the idea of emphasizing your best features instead of trying to minimize insecurities.

    1) legs toned by running
    2) small waist
    3) healthy hair
    4) well-shaped fingernails
    5) freckles!

And now you’ve got me thinking about what look to put together!

  3. Katie says:

Count me in (and probably some of the other Interrobang ladies, too)!

  4. Ris says:

I love this idea. I’m in!

  5. Jane W. says:

    I’m in!

    1. Legs toned by cycling and running
    2. Long, toned arms
    3. Long neck

  6. Cari says:

I’m in! List subject to change, but I think I’ll focus on:

skin (skin is a body part, right?)

    Awesome idea!

  7. Sounds like fun!! I’m in!

    1) Cleavage
    2) Waist
    3) Ankles
    4) Face
    5) Broad Shoulders

  8. andie says:

I am so in for this! Love the idea! How great!

Parts of my body I love-

    1. My eyes, they are an unusual shade of hazel
    2. My hair
    3. My skin- it’s very fair, but I am proud at how I’ve kept it healthy.

  9. andie says:

and I wanted to say breasts and cleavage, but I didn’t know if you guys would think I was crazy! I also love my breasts!

  10. Christa says:

    I’m totally in!
    1. legs
    2. my hair
    3. clavicle bones
    4. eyes
    5. smile

  11. I’m in! I don’t have a blog, but this’ll give me an incentive to go back to Flickr.

    As for traits to emphasize:

    - defined waist
    - shapely calves and ankles
    - bust, if I can do so in a manner appropriate to teaching frat boys… ;c)

(And to Cari – yes, skin counts as a body part; it’s one of the ones I’m least confident about in myself, so I’m especially looking forward to seeing how you dress to show off yours!)

  12. Count me in, too! What an empowering idea!

    1) complexion
    2) toned shoulders and arms
    3) small ankles
    4) clavicle bones (I like mine too, Christa!)
    5) flat stomach

Can’t wait to cook up an ensemble!

  13. Kaylyn says:

I would love to participate! I’ve been out of the blogging world for far too long now and this is just what I need to kick start myself!

    1. Hair
    2. Hands
    3. Legs
    4. Forearms
    5. Chest (honesty is always the best right?)

    I’m excited!

  14. Fer says:

I would LOVE to be a part of Dress Your Best Week! My blog is in Portuguese (because I am Brazilian), but I’m more than willing to have bilingual posts (English/Portuguese) to be able to participate in it. Is it ok with you? Or would I have to create the entire post in English? I can do it either way, just please let me know which one you think it’s best :)

My 5 favorite body parts are:

    1. My skin: it’s smooth, hardly no wrinkles at all, it never itches, it heals extremely well when I take stitches (some doctors have even complimented me on it), it gets a nice tan when I sunbathe.
    2. My breasts: they’re the right size (I’ve discovered they are the exact size many women in my country ask when they get implants; many people have asked me if I have them myself, and the answer is no), and still very firm as I slowly but surely approach my 40s.
    3. My legs: killer legs! I’ve got them from my mom; she’s almost 60 and still has the nicest legs ever.
    4. My hair: it’s not perfect, but it’s perfect for me :)
    5. My waist: I wasn’t born with it, I have to tell you. It’s a mixture of plastic surgery + pilates classes twice a week. But maybe because I had to work very hard for it, I love it even more!

  15. I would love to participate and maybe some of my co-bloggers will as well

    My favorite 5:
    1. My eyes
    2. My hair
    3. My hour-glass shape (I know this isn’t a part, but it encompasses the awesome way my breasts, waist, and hips all look together on my body)
    4. My ass
    5. My shoulders and upper back

  16. EvaNadine says:

im going to take a stab at this one!
    my best 5 are:
    1. my “girls”
    2. my curvy waist
    3. my long neck
    4. my boo-tay
    5. my eyes

  17. sabrina says:

What a great idea. I’m totally in.
My favorite 5 (this is hard because I am compelled to qualify my claims)
    1) Legs
    2) Cheekbones
    3) Wrists
    4) Skin tone (that’s weird, but I like my skin color)
    5) Hips

  18. Jane says:

    I’m in.
I’m struggling to come up with five but here goes.
    1. My smallish waist
    2. My shoulders
    3. My toned arms
    4. My blonde bob
    5. My petite height

  19. I’m absolutely in!

    Let’s see. I love:
    1. My hourglass figure, including terrific bust, comparatively tiny waist, and full, curvy hips (does that count as three?);
    2. My skin;
    3. My broad, strong shoulders;
    4. My eyes.

  20. admin says:

    Wow, great replies, everyone!

@Fer – we would love for you to participate in any capacity you want. An English post would be great, but if you want to make it bilingual, that would be even better because it will reach even more readers and we want to spread the word. Looking forward to reading it!

  21. Clare says:

I’m so in! I’d love to read the list I wrote for you all last year, to see if the things I love about myself have stayed consistent. Soooo, let’s see this year’s:

    1. My waist – it’s not a narrow waist, which makes it challenging, but I’ve learned how to work with it, which makes me love it all the more.
    2. My hair – short, sexy, pixie
    3. My clavicle area
    4. My legs
    5. The “gals”

  22. Fer says:

ok! biligual posts they will be ;)

I’m really looking forward to it (there are SO MANY possible outfits in my head right now it’s giving me a headache).

cheers! (or, as we would close messages here in Brazil, “beijo!” – literally, “a kiss”).

  23. Millie says:

As Katie suggested up there, I’m in too! It sounds great.

  24. Kelsey says:

I am so curious if E. has different ideas about her favorite parts post-baby. Obviously she doesn’t have the bump to dress for anymore, but, as a new mom myself, I’ve found that my body has changed so much (in such surprising ways), that my favorite parts have also changed. Pre-baby, I never would have listed “the girls;” they certainly make the top 5 now! I look forward to this grand experiment!

  25. I’m in. This will be a good challenge for me. I want to focus on…legs, ankles, arms and eyes.

  26. Frances Joy says:

    I’m in.

    I love my:
    1. Strong legs
    2. Collar bone
    3. Booty
    4. Hair
    5. and eyes.

  27. Dawn says:

    I am in!

    1) Blue eyes
    2) Dainty wrists
    3) My curvy waist
    4) My short hair
    5) My calf muscles

  28. Kathleen says:

Thanks for the inspiration and empowerment!
    My personal picks are:
    1. Toned calves
    2. Broad, defined shoulders
    3. Slim bodice area (ribcage, back)
    4. Long neck
    5. Toned arms (well, for my age ;)

  29. Cara says:

I’m definitely in! It might be a little difficult to plan ahead for it, since not only am I moving this weekend, but both my parents, and my fiancé’s parents will be in town to help (and it’s mother’s day on top of all of that!), but worst case scenario, it will force me to view what I’m wearing in a positive light, rather than immediately jump to my criticisms of it!
If I get the time to plan outfits, I think I’ll try to emphasize
    1) My eye colour
    2) My waist
    3) my long legs
    4) my butt (that would be the fiancé’s opinion!)
    5) my ears

  30. Rose says:

I am sooo in!!! I love this idea and what else would be a better way to inspire my outfits next week.

    1. My Curves
    2. My Legs
    3. My Eyes
    4. My Smile
    5. this will be a surprise for Friday!!

  31. Martica says:

This is difficult, but I think it’s worth doing! I asked my husband for some help thinking of things:

  32. Iris says:

I am so excited to try and do this! I love the idea of look at things from a different perspective. My fav body parts are:

    1)my legs/calves
    2)my boobs
3)my cheekbones (although I don’t know how one dresses to accentuate that)
    4)my hourglass shape
    5)my soft skin

  33. I’d love to participate! What a great way to shift my attitude and focus in the mornings from one of (often) frustration or negativity towards positivity!

    So far I’ve got:

    1) collar bone/décolletage
    2) soft skin
    3) blue eyes
    4)long legs
    5)cheek bones

    • Anil says:

I wrestled with the diciseon on how to present my photographs some time agao from being a purist with no processing, now I can’t not process an image to some degree to give it my visual signature if you will. I figure I want my photo to stand out from the rest if I had other photographers standing there with me taking the same shot at the same time. Not just composition and focus, but the final result which can subtly manipulated with a bit of post-processing.

  34. Dottie says:

This is such a great idea! We are definitely in. I’ll be dressing for my bicycle-toned legs, but I don’t want to speak for Trisha and her awesome legs :)

  35. Ciarra says:

This is such a challenge for me… it’s so easy to say all of the things I DON’T like about me. It’s also easy to be discouraged because so many people who are participating love things about themself that I don’t have, things I wish I had, like a long pretty neck, flat stomach, clavicle bones, toned legs, narrow waist, etc.

Soooo… working on that empowerment and things to focus on for dressing my best. This will be a challenge but a good one, I dare say. Here goes:

    1. My hair
    2. Eyes
    3. Wrists
    4. Legs
    5. Chest

Okay. There. Now I have to go think up some outfits for next week to highlight those areas. Oi.

  36. Fia says:

    Count me in!

Let’s see…legs, eyes, collarbone, ankles, and eyebrows.

  37. Lucy says:

I don’t have a blog or even a Flickr account (I know, what century do I live in?), but as a daily reader of style blogs, I wanted to say that this has been the most uplifting and inspiring post I’ve read in a long time. So, while I can’t really share, I will definitely participate. My five faves:

    1. Ankles
    2. Straight waist
    3. Small breasts
    4. Neck
    5. Eyes

As an unmitigated H shape, I have tried for a while now to create visual curves on what really is a straight body. But I’m starting to think that, while I love curves on others, I’m actually fine with not having any. I hope this week will help me put the remainder of my worries in this regard to rest.

  38. [...] lastly, I am so excited to participate in the academichic’s Dress Your Best Week!! This is five days of dressing to show off your five favorite features of your body! My list for [...]

  39. A says:

Love to join in – thanks for kicking this off!

  40. Liz Rosas says:

Hope you got my e-mail, I’m totally in! I think I’ll go ahead and do the whole week with hair, decolletage, hands, legs, and feet! Can’t wait for it, I’m already dreaming of outfits and drafting my posts!

  41. rachel says:

    I’m in too!

  42. Trisha says:

Other half of LGRAB checking in! I think I’ll do legs and waist. Brilliant idea ladies!

  43. Chelsea S. says:

Oh you better believe I wanna get involved in this FABULOUS project :)

My current body part faves are:

    1) My small waist
    2) My round booty
    3) My shapely hips
(these kinda all make my hourglass figure, but concentrating on each will be a fun challenge!)
    4) My clavicles/décolletage
    5) My pretty hands/nails (not sure yet how to dress for this!)

I’d usually include my hair, but I’ve been dressing for it a lot lately with all the changes, so a break is in order.

Woohoo! You chics rock my world. Fo real.

  44. Orchid Grey says:

I think this is such a great idea, although I already dress to accentuate my favorite parts:

    1. Hair
    2. Waist
    3. Derriere
    4. Hands
    5. last is a tie with chest and shoulders

  45. *j(oyce) says:

    sounds fun!

i think i’ll focus on my collar bones, my shoulders, my wrists, my waist, and my booty ;)

  46. Kristin says:

oop, sorry I’m a little late, but I want to play this time too!

I’d like to dress to accentuate my amazing:
    1. waist
    2. neck and collarbone
    3. shoulders
    4. feet
    5. tummy (although I may not be able to show this off without entering into swimwear …)

  47. Shay says:

I totally want to try this. It took me a while to find 5 things I want to dress, since I have gained weight from a stressful semester.

    My five features:
    1. Hair
    2. Wrists
    3. Ankles
    4. Hips
    5. Neckline

  48. Emily says:

    I’m in!

    1. Eyes
    2. Arms
    3. Hourglass figure
    4. Calves
    5. Small of my back (my wife insists on this one, even though I don’t know how in the world to highlight this with outfits! But she gets to pick one, at least)

  49. [...] In fashion related news, one of my favorite blogs Academichic, is having an event called “Dress your Best” week.  When it comes to fashion, so many of us, including me, are interested in hiding all our flaws.  Our lumpy stomachs, our flabby thighs, untoned arms, or whatever other feature we decide to take offense with.  Dress your Best means instead of dressing your worst features and focusing on them, dress your best features, the things you like.  The conditions of the contest stipulate you pick five fave features, and then next week, you dress to show of them.  You can read more here. [...]

  50. Erin says:

    What a super idea!
    I love my:
    1. hair!
    2. chest!
    3. eyes!
    4. hourglass figure!
    5. feet!

  51. Fer says:

I wrote a post in my blog (in Portuguese) about DYBW: I hope it’s ok that I’ve used the same picture you put here.

  52. Brandy says:

I do not have a fashion blog, but I think I might take part in this.

    My features:

    1) Eyes – probably means I’ll be wearing contacts instead of being lazy with my glasses
    2) My waist – I have a bit of tummy pudge now that you can see in profile, but from the front or back it’s still a nice hourglass shape!
    3) Collarbone/shoulder area
    4) Cheekbones – maybe I’ll trim my hair a bit to make sure it’s highlighting them
    5) Hair – I have a complicated relationship with my hair right now. I finished chemo almost 6 years ago and it’s still not back to normal. After waiting for several years to get back my perfect, straight, Pantene-commercial-enviable hair, I’ve finally in the past couple of years started accepting that I’ve got a “new normal” and figuring out what to do with it. But I’ve still been mostly doing that by working against the waves that have appeared rather than with them. Maybe I’ll explore how to have awesome wavy hair instead of awesome straight hair.

  53. Brooke says:

I’m so in! This is a great idea! :)

  54. Grace says:

This is a great idea! I’m totally in. I’ll be dressing to accentuate my:
    1. ample and well-shaped ass
    2. perky and well-shaped boobs
    3. long legs
    4. athletic overall figure
    5. strong arms and excellent upper arm tat

  55. Ellen says:

I’m in! This is such a great mind-bender. I’ll be focusing on one or more of the following:
    1. Legs
    2. Booty
    3. Hair
    4. Pretty feet
    5. Blue eyes

  56. Angie says:

I’ll be participating!! Love the idea and love your blog!

  57. Suniverse says:

    I love this idea!

I am going to dress for:

    1. My chest
    2. My hair
    3. My eyes
    4. My feet
    5. My shoulders

  58. What a great idea! I’d definitely love to participate. I think I would focus on my hair, shoulders, legs, waist and lips.

  59. I’m in! I let a lot of my wardrobe choices be dictated by my concerns about a single body part, and I think shifting my focus will make me happier. Thanks for issuing the challenge!

My blogging partner will be staying with me next week, so I’ll have some help getting daily pics up.

    My favorite parts:

    1) boobs
    2) legs
    3) hair
    4) hands

    and my partner’s pick:

    5) butt

Perhaps not all of these looks will be work appropriate. :)

  60. Rhianna says:

    I want to participate!

  61. YSaori says:

    Yes, I’m in!

I’m writing a blog in Japanese. In Japanese, there is no equivalent for the word “body image.” It’s not that there is no body image issue in Japan — it’s that they don’t have a word to call it and discuss it. This Dress Your Best Week would give me a chance to talk about it on my blog… thank you!

    2. My waist
    3. My hands

    5. My decolletage
