Coming Soon: Dress Your Best Week!

So often, our focus when getting dressed in the morning is how to minimize or downplay aspects of our bodies that we’re just not crazy about. Does this skirt smooth my hips? Does this top hide my tummy? Do these pants make my thighs look slimmer?

But what would happen if you inverted that thought process? What if, instead of dressing to mitigate your so-so, you dressed to highlight the parts of your body that you love most? What if, for a whole week, you committed to self-consciously dressing your best bits?

When we tried this experiment last year, all three of us were surprised by how empowering such a simple mental switch could be. E. dressed for her baby bump. A. dressed for her calves. S. dressed for her hair. Although our outfit choices may not have changed that much visibly, the act of getting dressed and articulating why we chose what we did had a significant psychological and emotional effect. And so we want to try this again, and we want you to join us.

We’re inviting you to dress your best with us! If you’d like to participate on your own blog and be linked to other bloggers who will also be dressing their best, follow these simple steps.

  1. Send us an e-mail or leave a comment letting us know that you want to be a part of Dress Your Best week. We’ll add your blog to a master list of participants which will be posted on academichic.com on May 10.
  2. Write down a list of at least five body parts that you love, no matter how big or small. Have great legs? Fantastic ankles? A graceful neck? You can look at some of the great lists that we received last year for inspiration.
  3. During the week of May 10-14, 2010, dedicate at least one post on your own blog to an outfit that you’ve built around one of your favorite body parts. Explain why you love that part of you and how your outfit complements it.
  4. Link back to this post on academichic.com and, if you wish, download the banner or badge below and include it in your Dress Your Best posts to let your readers know about this week long effort.
  5. Starting on May 10, check out our master list of participants and take the time to be inspired by other bloggers who are choosing to dress their best rather than minimize their worst.

    (And to Cari – yes, skin counts as a body part; it’s one of the ones I’m least confident about in myself, so I’m especially looking forward to seeing how you dress to show off yours!)

    I would LOVE to be a part of Dress Your Best Week! My blog is in Portuguese (because I am Brazilian), but I’m more than willing to have bilingual posts (English/Portuguese) to be able to participate in it. Is it ok with you? Or would I have to create the entire post in English? I can do it either way, just please let me know which one you think it’s best :)

    My 5 favorite body parts are:

    1. My skin: it’s smooth, hardly no wrinkles at all, it never itches, it heals extremely well when I take stitches (some doctors have even complimented me on it), it gets a nice tan when I sunbathe.
    2. My breasts: they’re the right size (I’ve discovered they are the exact size many women in my country ask when they get implants; many people have asked me if I have them myself, and the answer is no), and still very firm as I slowly but surely approach my 40s.
    3. My legs: killer legs! I’ve got them from my mom; she’s almost 60 and still has the nicest legs ever.
    4. My hair: it’s not perfect, but it’s perfect for me :)
    5. My waist: I wasn’t born with it, I have to tell you. It’s a mixture of plastic surgery + pilates classes twice a week. But maybe because I had to work very hard for it, I love it even more!

    1. My waist – it’s not a narrow waist, which makes it challenging, but I’ve learned how to work with it, which makes me love it all the more.

    I am so curious if E. has different ideas about her favorite parts post-baby. Obviously she doesn’t have the bump to dress for anymore, but, as a new mom myself, I’ve found that my body has changed so much (in such surprising ways), that my favorite parts have also changed. Pre-baby, I never would have listed “the girls;” they certainly make the top 5 now! I look forward to this grand experiment!

    I’m definitely in! It might be a little difficult to plan ahead for it, since not only am I moving this weekend, but both my parents, and my fiancé’s parents will be in town to help (and it’s mother’s day on top of all of that!), but worst case scenario, it will force me to view what I’m wearing in a positive light, rather than immediately jump to my criticisms of it!
    If I get the time to plan outfits, I think I’ll try to emphasize

      I wrestled with the diciseon on how to present my photographs some time agao from being a purist with no processing, now I can’t not process an image to some degree to give it my visual signature if you will. I figure I want my photo to stand out from the rest if I had other photographers standing there with me taking the same shot at the same time. Not just composition and focus, but the final result which can subtly manipulated with a bit of post-processing.

    This is such a challenge for me… it’s so easy to say all of the things I DON’T like about me. It’s also easy to be discouraged because so many people who are participating love things about themself that I don’t have, things I wish I had, like a long pretty neck, flat stomach, clavicle bones, toned legs, narrow waist, etc.

    Soooo… working on that empowerment and things to focus on for dressing my best. This will be a challenge but a good one, I dare say. Here goes:

    I don’t have a blog or even a Flickr account (I know, what century do I live in?), but as a daily reader of style blogs, I wanted to say that this has been the most uplifting and inspiring post I’ve read in a long time. So, while I can’t really share, I will definitely participate. My five faves:

    3. Small breasts

    As an unmitigated H shape, I have tried for a while now to create visual curves on what really is a straight body. But I’m starting to think that, while I love curves on others, I’m actually fine with not having any. I hope this week will help me put the remainder of my worries in this regard to rest.

    I do not have a fashion blog, but I think I might take part in this.

    My features:

    1) Eyes – probably means I’ll be wearing contacts instead of being lazy with my glasses
    2) My waist – I have a bit of tummy pudge now that you can see in profile, but from the front or back it’s still a nice hourglass shape!
    3) Collarbone/shoulder area
    4) Cheekbones – maybe I’ll trim my hair a bit to make sure it’s highlighting them
    5) Hair – I have a complicated relationship with my hair right now. I finished chemo almost 6 years ago and it’s still not back to normal. After waiting for several years to get back my perfect, straight, Pantene-commercial-enviable hair, I’ve finally in the past couple of years started accepting that I’ve got a “new normal” and figuring out what to do with it. But I’ve still been mostly doing that by working against the waves that have appeared rather than with them. Maybe I’ll explore how to have awesome wavy hair instead of awesome straight hair.

In Japanese, there is no equivalent for the word “body image.” It’s not that there is no body image issue in Japan — it’s that they don’t have a word to call it and discuss it.
