I’m wrapping up red cardi week and getting ready to allow other cardigans back in my life. For this last incarnation, I’m going for one of my favorite analogous color combinations: red and purple. I opted for a red and purple color block effect to add a bit of color to a simple weekend ensemble of jeans, flats, a trench coat and a tee + cardi mix.
Analogous , originally uploaded by academichic. So I’m sure that you’ve noticed by now, that I wore this same red cardi all week. I decided to do this in an impromptu attempt to celebrate Spring finally gracing us with its presence. What better way to relish the nice weather than by wearing one of my favorite Spring time items in a favorite color?
Many a style guides will tell you that a simple cardigan in a neutral is a ‘must have’ for any capsule wardrobe. While I agree that a charcoal, dark brown, or black cardi will likely never be amiss, I think it’s much more fun to have a solid colored cardi in a color you truly love. E. has a wine colored cardi that she’s named as part of her capsule wardrobe must-haves, and A. has found wonderful ways to create many an outfit with her pale blue one. If you were to choose a non-neutral cardigan with which to build a ‘basics’ wardrobe, which color would you love to have? (My second favorite one is a purple one that also gets much wear and were I to add a new one to the mix: how about a pretty coral?) S.
And now for the week in recap. . .

That cardigan looks sensational – I love the way you have taken a style rule (neutral cardi) and turned it inside out.
I love the way you’ve worn the cardigan over the week, and I definitely agree that a color gives more pop to your wardrobe than a neutral. I think I’d go for royal purple.
I have a yellowish-green cardi that I similarly use as a neutral. Even though it is kind of a unique color, it goes with a surprising amount of things.
I have a mustard cardigan that I use a lot like Bri (#3) describes. A lot of my dresses are neutrals, so an outfit might look like neutral dress + mustard cardigan + bright colored jewelry to jazz things up.
I have a serious case of cardi love, but my favorite is my purple-ish cardigan from Old Navy. It goes with everything, and I love the way it fits! I have white and black cardigans as well, but neither get half as much wear as my fun purple one.
My go-to cardigan is bright yellow. It brightens up dreary days and just makes me happy on sunny ones. I’ve got lots but it is definitely my favorite one.
I have a couple of neutral cardigans, but my favorite is my red one from Faded Glory. It adds so much color to my neutral dresses. Thanks for photo collage — it’s inspiration for my next cardigan-related outfits!
I greatly admire your red cardi creativity :)
I have a red Brooks Brothers cashmere cardigan that’s great to wear over fancy dresses or with jeans. I also have the exact cardi in light blue, too, now that I think of it :) I must admit that my most-worn cardigans are dark gray and brown, though. Kinda boring.
This is one of my favorite color combinations too! I just love the mix of the colors. You look fantastic!
Red and purple? Ohhh why didn’t I think of that before. Thanks! ;)
It’s true, a cardigan in a bright color adds so much to an outfit (as you’ve so ably demonstrated this week!). Although I have a grey jersey knit cardigan that gets alot of wear, I probably give equal time to my pale yellow cardigan. Cardigans, scarves, and colorful shoes are my go-tos for changing up an outfit. I’ve been inspired by this blog and other fashion blogs to experiment more with bright tights this winter – next up, experimenting more with belts!
i loved your red cardi remixes! i’ve seen a ton of remixes on blogs with little black dresses and other neutrals which has been cool but i am beyond impressed that you came up with so many combos with a strong RED cardigan! woo!
i’m also loving the purple/red combo above… you look so great in those warm colors!
