Endnotes:
I wore almost this exact ensemble back in October. I loved this combination of tan sweater with this grey printed jersey dress and pop of teal so much it even made it onto my year-one top 10 list.    I have no problem repeating outfits I like, especially when I’ll be seeing a different group of people, but I usually don’t post them the second (or third) time around.

I decided to re-post this ensemble because the addition of tights, makes it a perfect outfit for this week’s Fashion 101 on Tights.  I don’t think the these particular tights change the look of the outfit all that much (particularly since only a small amount of them shows between hemline and boot top), but combined with my teal scarf and rain trench, they did make the ensemble a little more weather-appropriate.

Somehow, I don’t actually own a pair of solid brown tights.  Instead, I have several different textured pairs in varying shades of brown.  So, this winter when I have been doubling up on my brown tights.  I love to layer my think ribbed tights over a sheer houndstooth pair creating an interesting pattern and rich color and providing a little more warmth.

Tight layering has been long been a favorite trick of all of us Chics.  I have layered black over hot pink to tone down the color;  purple over grey to richen the color, and various pairs for warmth. How have you layered your tights?

Sometimes, a different pair of tights is all it takes to make an outfit feel completely different!

  2. Julia says:

I’m happy to hear that you repeat outfits too(but you just don’t post them.) I feel like I wear outfit repeats when I really like a certain look, but when I see style bloggers, they never seem to repeat…it makes sense that they just don’t re-post what readers have seen before.

I love the pattern on this dress with the texture of the tights.

  3. Kathryn says:

I’m a big fan of layered tights. My favorite is bright solid tights under lace tights.

  4. Moni says:

I’ve layered my tights almost every day this past winter for warmth. Occasionally, I’ll experiment with different sartorial variations like layering a thin solid tight over a polka-dotted pair so that the subtle texture variation comes through, but in Michigan winters warmth is my first priority!

  5. Courtney says:

I like layering tights, but my favorite trick this winter was layering tights over long underwear! Super warm and comfortable, and you can’t tell they’re there.

  6. Ann says:

Somehow I never thought about layering tights, even though I am the most cold-intolerant person you will ever know.I will try it now though!

  7. Oh I have been in a tights frenzy. Unfortunately, it’s summer where I am :-/

  8. i love this particular look–so comfortable, classic, and well-proportioned.
i also don’t own a solid pair of brown tights. something about the warmth of the color brown makes me cozy up to patterns and thicker materials maybe?

I’ve seen you guys layer tights before and it looks really cool. I used to layer tights all the time and I found it would create this weird sort of swirly effect – hard to describe, but it kind of looked like the isobars on the weather report.

This only really happened with opaque over opaque. Have you ever noticed anything similar? Does the same thing happen with ribbed over opaque, for example?

  10. Kari Hilden says:

Yes layering is a nice way to go particulary now that there is such a huge tights selection available from colours, to textures, to lace ones. Solid under lace looks neat and allows for a lot of different looks when working with various colour combinations.

Rosalind, yes if you layer solids with solids you get those spirals as a result of the weaves overlapping. The sheerer the tights, or pantyhose, the more noticeable it becomes. It can be either annoying or it can also be a nice effect.

I’ve only ever worn black pantyhose ONCE since I moved to Australia from a very humid place in South East Asia a few years ago. And even then, it wasn’t willingly done. I had no choice but to wear them while I travelled (it was freezing) and peeled them off the minute I reached my destination. Your blog is really teaching me that tights are very versatile and can be worn with practically anything! If only I wasn’t so self conscious and shy to try out new styles that I didn’t grow up with!

I just have one questions…. how do you wash your tights? Do you throw it in the washing machine or do you hand wash them? Do you treat them like socks (since they do cover the feet) and wash them after every wear or do you wear them a few times, then wash it? I’m afraid they might rip… :(

Also, for a very very short person (1.50cm…that’s under 5 feet if i’m not wrong) I shy away from boots and only wear flats even in winter. Do you have any advice as to how I can incorporate neutral coloured tights with flats? I do wear skirts but as I have chunky thighs I tend to wear them hitting my knees and nowhere above them. I’m so afraid it might look yucky, because people usually wear skirts above the knees when they wear tights… right? :) Maybe I’m just being paranoid!

    I LOVE this outfit!

    I layer stockings a lot.

I walk a lot in my commute and textured tights like fishnets are uncomfortable pressing directly on my feet, plus my toes poke through and ruin them.

If I put a layer underneath then they don’t press into my foot and annoy it,plus my toes don’t poke holes in the textured stocking.

Fashion-wise I think it can tone down tights that might otherwise have you looking like Pippy Longstocking, helpful if you want a little jazz but need to be taken seriously.

  14. Sara Rose says:

I rarely comment, but I’m pretty head over heels for this look. I need to expand my heavier skirt and tights wardrobe- mine is pretty limited. That being said, I have this really sharp pair of sheer grey tights with a diamond like patten that I could layer over teal tights that I have. I imagine it would create a sort of neutral but not palette to work with.

  15. Jill says:

I’ve never had to layer my tights until this winter. (Ah, life in a northern climate.) All of my tights are in neutral colors, so I usually layer patterned black or gray tights over black opaque tights when I need the warmth. Next winter I’m going to buy some pretty shades to help mix things up… teal, eggplant, maybe even mustard.

  16. Teresa says:

It has never occurred to me to layer tights. I’ll have to give it a try. I absolutely love this dress.

  17. Jennifer S. says:

I love your idea of layering patterned tights. I have layered nylons and tights before when I wanted to be warmer, and my black solid tights with my wonderful black lacy leg warmers that go over the knee. I never thought to mix patterns before though. Great post!

  18. Mander says:

As a goth/punk teenager I was very fond of fishnets (they were only available at Halloween at the time), black tights with lots of little holes in them (I burned them in with an incense stick) and floral lace patterned tights. I used to wear all of these over various brightly colored tights. Maybe I should revive this look the next time we go out to the pub…

Oh and to Angie: you need a lingerie bag! I have one that is just a nylon lace envelope with a zipper, but you can put delicates inside and toss it in the washing machine with regular clothes and your tights etc. won’t get snagged. I have no idea where you get these kinds of things, as the one I have was my grandmother’s, but I’m sure they are still available. A pillowcase with the ends tied up works too.

I have Only had Opaque Black Tights of 120 denier and 90 Denier, but my mother in law kept stealing them, so now i just go bare legged all year round!!
