For this week’s scarf giveaway, we’re doing something a little different. This scarf wasn’t sent to us by a sponsor but instead thrifted (with love!) by S. in Munich, Germany. We would like to show our appreciation for all your support and thoughtful input during our scarf month (and always) by sending one winner a little package with the above vintage scarf from Germany. This little beauty measures 32 inches on all sides, is a large square, and 100% silk.
If you would like to enter the giveaway, leave us a comment telling us what your favorite item to shop vintage is. For a second chance to win, leave a separate comment telling us how you would wear this scarf or what scarf tying technique you might try on it. This giveaway is open until Sunday, Midnight Central time, after which we will randomly select a winner.

My favourite items to shop for at vintage stores: scarves, belts, jewellery, bags. In that order.
I would wear this scarf as a belt over a black tunic and medium wash bootleg jeans. I would also wear a brown skinny belt over the scarf.
Neat scarf! My favourite items to shop for vintage are accessories: bags, gloves, etc. Standard thrift stores are best for jeans.
I don’t shop vintage a lot but am currently keeping an eye out for silk slips in thrift stores. I’ll eventually find a few and I enjoy the hunt…
Love the scarf!
I’d fold the scarf in half diagonally, then keep folding until I have a long strip. I’d tie it like a men’s tie, leaving it loose around my neck.
My favorite vintage item to shop for is furniture! As far as clothing goes it is jewelery and scarves.
I am very excited to try the faux knot look. However, my favorite way to wear my favorite scarf is the triangle at the front of my neck look…whatever knot that is ;)
My favourite vintage things are accessories – brooches, necklaces, etc. Even my engagement ring is 100 years older than me.
I love the scarf. I don’t wear scarves very often, but am inspired by your scarf month to try it more. This scarf would definitely kick-start that!
I’m on the hunt for a fur coat. But I love to look for brooches and jewelry.
I love to shop for vintage skirts, dresses, and jewelery (brooches, pendants, and rings).
I would love to wear this scarf as a giant triangle like a wild west outlaw or a puppy just back from the groomer. You probably have a great name for that, but I can’t remember it.
I love vintage coats. I’ve been really lucky, and have for so far!
I love to shop for vintage jewelry – it’s pretty much guaranteed that no one will have anything similar to what I’m wearing. The more crazy/unique/whimisical, the better! Although my vintage jewelry comes from thrift stores – I’m not wearing vintage Cartier! I really love buying vintage jewelry for friends and family, and the time and thought it takes to find the perfect piece for someone I love.
I would love to wear this scarf with dark-rinse jeans, a cardigan, a simple tee or tank, and my favorite embellished flats. I’ve been rocking the European knot for about five years with most of my scarves, so I would probably try that look first (then tie it fifteen other ways, then go back to the European knot!)
I’ll thrift anything, but I’ve had my most success with accessories – scarves and jewelry.
Hmmm, how would I wear this? Well, it would look fabulous over my new boyfriend blazer in a very loose fashion around the neck.
I like to to shop vintage for something that little bit different… I keep an open mind, and just see what I can find.
Last summer I found a beautiful traditional Welsh woollen tapestry cape/poncho. It’s quite bright (green, blue and black patterned), probably from the 1960s, and I love how it combines a traditional material with an unusual design. It’s unique – almost little crazy – but is coveted nonetheless! Plus, it makes me feel pretty indestructible when I wear it – invaluable for those ‘bad’ writing days…
I love vintage coats – I had a gorgeous long black cashmere one (not sure exactly what decade)that I wore daily and unfortunately destroyed the already-weak lining; I’m still on the hunt for a replacement – with which I will be much more careful!
I’m sure I will eventually think of more ideas, but I think I’d start with an ascot tie for this scarf, and use it for my lazier days to add a pop of color to a black v-neck sweater, jeans, and boots.
My favorite vintage item to shop for is definitely jewelry, followed closely by sunglasses, and lastly skirts. They just don’t make skirts for my body shape any more!
Because the scarf is silk, it seems like an excellent way to dress up some of my more casual cotton dresses. And it seems light enough to do the same in the summer.
My favourite items to thrift for are belts, scarves, cardigans, and skirts (in that order). I would wear this scarf with white button down and dark rinse skinny jeans. I’d probably tie it with the ‘Angie knot’ (from youlookfab.com)
My favorite item to thrift would be blazers and jackets. :-)
I would wear the scarf as necktie, with the full part worn in front instead of in back. I’d wear it over a white tee with my black blazer, skinny jeans and black boots.
Favorite vintage item: new pattern and colors–I love to experiment with things outside my comfort zone at thrift store prices!
To wear this scarf, I would style it for spring! Something pastel and fresh to remind us all that winter is almost over.
I only recently started vintage hunting, but really enjoy searching for brooches. Modern ones are hard to find.
And I would wear this scarf witha white blouse, folded in half triangularly and then tucked into the front of the blouse, where it is open.
My favorite thing to shop for, vintage-wise, would have to be skirts. I’ve just had the BEST luck finding some true gems, especially some great vintage Wilson’s leather skirts that would retail at over $100 in a non-thrift store.
I also feel like this scarf would be perfect as an ascot, or just a simple neck-scarf knot, worn with lots of prints and Spring-y colors.
IMO, the best items to shop vintage for are accessories like scarfs, belts, hats.
This scarf is so pretty and I just started following your website two weeks ago and it has definitely changed the way I look and wear my clothes. Thank you for putting color into my life!
I would wear this scarf with a purple or dark pink shirt and either black or blue skinny jeans with my brown boots.
I usually tie my scarfs by twisting them, folding them over to make a hole to put the ends through.
I never wore scarfs until I took a trip to Venice and the shop girls showed me how to wear them. Now I wear them practically every day.
If you choose to send me the scarf I will wear it with pride!
Thanks,
Lori
This scarf would be perfect as a faux belt on my little black dress.
What a lovely scarf! I love looking for funky ties, sweater vests, and kitchen appliances at thrift shops/ vintage resale stores.
I used to love a great vintage t-shirt (and still do), but as I’m no longer a college student with infinite opportunities to WEAR said t-shirts, I look for jewelry or skirts now on my vintage shopping trips. LOVE skirts of all shapes and lengths and patterns!
Skirts are a favorite item of mine. I find more diversity among skirts than in any other item in thrift shops. For my shape, the fit is usually more forgiving than in pants, and they’re a great starting point for an outfit.
Also, I’d probably wear that scarf with a pretzel knot like you posted about on 8 Feb. Funky knots are awesome!
I love to shop at thrift stores for almost anything. I guess my favorite items would be accessories. One of my alltime favorite finds was a pair of riding boots that looked like brand new. I wore those boots for close to twenty years and cried when I had to finally retire them!!
As far as the scarf goes, I would fold it on the diagonal and wear it in front or in back (the cowboy collar). I also thought, as I gazed at this photo, how lovely this would look on my “wall of scarves.” I have all my scarves hung up in my bedroom as a sort of art piece, and I am lacking some blue…
Thanks for the giveaway. It’s a lovely scarf, and a color I wear often. I’d wear it once around my neck, with the ends handing long over it long, over a simple black sweater dress. I’d add tall black boots over patterned black tights, keeping the outfit simple to let the scarf take center stage.
I love to shop for vintage accessories including scarves, brooches, flowers and hats! but lately i’ve also found some fun dresses and tops.
I would probably wear it with a dark navy pencil skirt and a black button down. I would tie it with one of the parallel knots so it didn’t bulk out too much. I’d probably wear it with black hose and flats. The scarf would massively pop and i would be able to add a fun and beautiful element to a teaching outfit!
My favorite vintage items are accessories because they lend that personal and romantic touch even if the outfit is pretty modern. My favorite place is my grandmother’s (HUGE) old jewelry box.
I like shopping for vintage jewelry!
and to style… i would probably have to go with an ascot tie if it didn’t end up too bulky. Or a tie similar to the way A. pinned and brooched her scarf recently… something sweet that would bring attention to the collar.
I would wear this scarf tied in an ascot knot with jeans and a black shirt on the weekend.
I love to thrift for skirts
Great scarf. I would wear it as a belt with jeans and a graphic t-shirt
I love shopping for vintage coats–they often make me feel like Jackie O.
Great scarf!
well…its not clothing but I love looking for vintage cookware and dishes! They are so sturdy and feel full of happy kitchen memories.
I would wear this scarf over a black sleeveless shift dress, with gladiator sandals and big gold earrings.
I love to shop vintage for jewelry! I frequent flea markets, consignment shops, estate sales, anything–I’m not snobby about where I get my jewelry from, but I like it to have some history! My dad’s a jeweler, so I’ve learned to have a discerning eye and I know what features to look for and which to be wary of.
I would wear this scarf as a wide obi-type belt over a white or black shift dress, with silver flats or flipflops and big silver disk earrings!
My favorite vintage shop is called Material Plane and has hippies behind the counter. And my second favorite place has the best jewelry.
I like shopping for vintage accessories such as necklaces, bags, and scarves. And I also keep an eye out for skirts and jackets while I’m shopping for those accessories.
Oh, it’s LOVELY! I shop for vintage dresses primarily. Can’t get enough of ‘em.
I would wear the scarf with my straight jeans and dark blue jacket, and then arrange the scarf as a faux top like E did earlier this week!
I’m a tough size to fit in vintage clothing, but jewelry never lets me down. I got a beaded sweater guard in the shape of a pair of keys the other day, and it’s already one of my favorites ever.
I’d probably use that scarf to experiment with the ascot knot. It’d add a lot of richness to my favorite monochromatic combinations in blue-green.
LOVE scarf month! thanks for the inspiration! I love thrifting for skirts because I can often find unique ones that may only need a little hemming to update! Favorite scarf knot is one I learned from a friend from India- which ends up like a woven knot- a little more interesting than traditionaly knots.
My favorite item to thrift would be old necklaces and rings. You can never go wrong, it’ll always fit! I love old jeweled necklaces, and there’s something about thrifting them that makes them eve more fabulous!
i love thrifting broaches. they can be found for very little money and they’re a great way to dress up an outfit
Hands down, my favorite thrift store scores are accessories. I’ve found several lovely silk and wool scarves and bakelite bracelets and necklaces on my excursions.
i’d tie the scarf around my neck and pair it with neutrals so it stands out
My favorite item to thrift is skirts! :-)
I love vintage dresses, jackets, jewelry, bags.
That is so pretty! I would say that my favorite things to thrift for are belts. You can get so many fun ones for so cheap. Second to that would be purses and housewares.
Ooh, lovely!
My favorite target at thrift stores is the skirt rail. A good skirt is hard to find “on the high street” — at least given my preferences. Thrift stores are sometimes a great way to get at quality materials that I couldn’t afford otherwise, or are from brands that I normally wouldn’t be shopping from.
I love thrifting for work clothes. When I’m lucky I can find much classier, better-made clothing than my budget would allow otherwise.
I would wear that scarf with an ascot tie over a plain white v-neck t and a tan 3/4 sleeve cardigan, dark wash boot cut jeans and a pair of dark brown oxfords. Then I would add a subtle bracelet or ring and put my hair back to let the scarf be the center of attention!
I confess I’m kind of new to thrifting / vintage shopping, but probably my favourite thing to shop for is clip-on earrings: I don’t have pierced ears, and it can be very difficult to find earrings that are new and that aren’t designed with 10-year-olds in mind.
(After earrings, probably other jewellery, belts, and skirts)
I love shopping for vintage dresses–they have such beautiful patterns and I love the fit. Non-clothing, I love vintage table clothes!
I would wear this scarf with a purple dress of mine or with darker neutrals.
As for how I would style it, I immediately thought of my newly thrifted houdstooth dress (http://shopkimsblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/call-out-hounds.html) because it’s the same colors and would mae for some fun pattern mixing!
I’d wear this scarf with an all-black ensemble (long-sleeve tee, skinny pants, black pointy-toe shoes, big black stud earrings) to let it really pop.
I would wear it ascot style–probably with a pair of great silver earrings!
I love to shop for vintage jewelry and purses. I have a big foot so I am NOT going to find my size in shoes, and I am plus size so the clothing can be hard to master. So jewelry purses and knick-knacks….
I would try to wear the scarf as a shirt under a blazer. I thought that was a very cool technique and this scarf looks like it may work. Otherwise, I may just wear it the normal way, looped and tied around my neck.
I am new to vintage shopping, and the best luck I have had so far has been with handbags. There’s something special about using a vintage handbag and wondering where its previous owner took it, what items it once held, and what outfits she paired it with.
I love shopping for vintage accessories, such as scarves, bags and jewelry. They make such a statement without spending a lot of money.
I’ve *gasp* never vintage shopped! Unless you count my senior year in high school when I bought a winter coat for college. And I don’t – that coat was horrid!
Should I ever try my hand at vintage shopping, I’ll look for jewelry, scarves, and blouses.
I would pair this scarf with my v-neck black jersey dress with a gray longsleeved tee layered under it. With my black riding boots and vintage gold earrings, I think it would be a great day-out outfit.
I’d use that scarf to add a pop of color to my favorite weekend outfit – jeans and a white t. Either loosely around my neck or as a belt.
I want it! I Definitely plan to shop for vintage accessories (scarves, bags, belts, jewelry… been really wanting some vintage gloves lately too), but also love statement pieces- coats, dresses, trousers, etc. Something that stands out.
What a beautiful scarf! I love to look for cute plates, and skirts, since skirts are easy to wear even if they are not exactly the right size. I wore some pretty zany skirts in college!
I love to buy thrifted belts! They are sooo cheap and I can usually find some unique styles.
I love thrifting for fun, vintage dresses and like everyone else…accessories!
And I would wear that scarf with virtually anything. Somehow everything in my closet goes with teal! But probably with jeans and a black top… or maybe an LBD? If its not too big I would wear it ascot style!
I would wear this gorgeous scarf with a tailored gray dress, black stockings, and black heels. I’d wear it ascot-style, and keep my jewelry simple because this scarf deserves to be the star of the outfit. (I love your site, girls!)
I would probably wear this scarf the “Orchid Grey” way. I think it would be really cute wrapped around and then tucked under.
I would wear this scarf as a belt over my little black dress!
I love to shop for vintage costume jewelry and jackets. I have a bit of a jacket problem (you can never have too many!), and some of the jewelry reminds me of my great-grandmother, who passed some of hers down to me. I especially love chunky necklaces!
I love shopping for hats, jewelry, or skirts when I’m going vintage. I’ve found some amazing skirts that really make a statement.
I have never had success thrifting! Hard to believe, right?
I would wear that scarf with a sweater in a similar tuquise color and a new black skirt I have. The sweater is a cardigan with kind of a v neck and it would be the perfect opening to nessle the scarf into!
I hope I win!!
What a terrific find! I’d wear this scarf as an obi under a fitted black jacket, with jeans, and yellow ballet flats.
I like to thrift for accessories- like shoes, belts bags, etc. I have a hard time finding thrift items that fit me properly. Maybe I need to learn how to do some basic sewing so that I can do adjustments on vintage items!
My favorite items to thrift are usually accessories–my favorite bag cost me $12 at my favorite vintage store and I’ve been using it nonstop for over a year now! I also just bought a great scarf at Beacon’s Closet this weekend.
I like thrifting dresses – they are too much money brand new!
I love thrifting brooches, particularly large ones with colored stones, as well as sunglasses. I lose mine all the time so paying a ton for them isn’t an option, plus you often find great vintage ones in cool colors and shapes!
I’d wear the scarf folded thin and then tied like a men’s tie over a button-down blouse.
I love the look and pattern of this scarf. I would wear it with one of my many summer dresses–winterized, of course, with a cardigan, tights, and boots.
Love the blog–just discovered it this week and devoured all of the scarf posts in one day.
I have a black sheath dress that this would look great with! Since it’s square, I would probably wear it bunched turtleneck- like around my neck (ascot?), but I really love the obi look with a belt over it, so maybe I’d be brave enough to try that out with this scarf!
I love to thrift for pants. It’s kind of silly, but I can’t really afford many brand name pants, and I wear a TON of jeans when I’m not working. I love jeans, and if I spend a bit of time, I can find some really sweet pants. I also really love thrifting jewelry. I love some of the older pieces, but it’s getting tough to find them of late.
I would wear this as a headwrap with a navy cashmere sweater, grey skirt, and turquoise tights with grey heels.
My favorite vintage shopping has to be jewelry. It has so much history to it.
I would probably wear this as a belt – belts are something I can rarely find and I love the look of a scarf belt. I have a short neck, so I don’t often wear them as a scarf should be worn.
This scarf is sooo beautiful. I just love the color! I actually just bought eyeliner in this exact color. :)
I love shopping for vintage bags and purses. So many fun styles and such sophisticated shapes. A vintage bag adds a touch of old school glamor to even a basic outfit.
I would either wear it belted over a brown dress or wrapped several times around my neck a la Orchard Grey.
I’d style the scarf as a swath of color underneath a neutral wrap cardigan paired with a basic a-line skirt.
i’d wear it over a “blank canvas” style brown dress, belted
I love vintage scarves and neckties! Most of my clothes are thrifted, but I specifically go vintage for a good skinny tie or beautiful scarf.
My favorite thing to thrift shop for is dresses. I have purchased nearly all of my winter dresses at thrift shops because they have such a good variety, and dresses don’t seem as worn as other items of clothing.
I might try it with my purple dress. I have been looking for color inspiration for my wedding and for some reason the purple and teal look great together!
I would try wearing this around my waist, then belting over top like S did this past week.
Vintage jewelry (specifically necklaces) are the best. So unique from what you can get in the retail stores, and often a great value.
I adore vintage brooches! I collect them whenever I’m out vintage shopping or thrifting.
I’m not a big vintage shopper, not because I don’t enjoy it, but because I haven’t yet been bitten by a fabulous, must-have, affordable buy. But I adore vintage jewellery and scarves and have a weakness for vintage features like middy collars that I’m not daring enough to wear.
…and this scarf would be perfect for a subdued splash of color in my very dark and boring wardrobe. I think it would make a fetching belt over my little black dress.
I like to shop for belts, scarves, and jewelry vintage – that way I can indulge my habit cheaply and lazily (no changing rooms!).
I was admiring a large, square scarf worn by someone in one of my classes yesterday, and how beautiful it looked. I’d wear this scarf tied loose with the knot over one shoulder with my black sheath dress and heels for a somewhat dressy look. And for a less dressy look, I’d probably fold it a few times on the diagonal to lose some of the volume and pair it with jeans and a plain sweater.
Beautiful scarf!
I shop for skirts and dresses mostly since there is usually a very nice selection. Necklaces, belts, scarves, and purses are pretty easy to find too. I never touch the denim section- it’s way too difficult to find anything that fits!
My favorite thrift finds are blazers. I recently scored a great wool blazer with leather buttons for $3 that fits like it is custom made…and an dark brown suede banana republic blazer that I can’t wait to use as a jacket in the spring.
Hi, ladies! I love to shop for vintage jewelry… particulary large pins and necklaces.
If I won this scarf, I would pair it with the grays and navys in my wardrobe. I don’t wear black. I have actually been on the look out for a scarf to go with the grays/navys since most of mine go with browns, pinks, etc.
And… I’d wear this scarf with a black shell and dark trouser jeans… maybe dangly earrings and a big ring!
I don’t remember the name of the method but I have been wanting to just drape it around my neck and leave the ends hanging down then belt with a thin belt. I don’t have a scarf that is thin enough to try this technique but this scarf would do the trick!
I’d like to try the ascot method of tying with this scarf – something i’ve never done before.
It’s fun shopping for vintage jewelry — especially brooches and earrings from the 20s and 40s. The pieces remind me of my grandmother.
The first thing I ever thrifted was a scarf and it is still one of my favs! They always fit, are usually such great prices and I love the vintage mix of colors and patterns available!
I would totally wear this shoot ‘em up bandanna style to show off the great colors and design and make it the focal point of the outfit!
Jewelry (brooches, in particular) is my favorite vintage item to shop for.
My favourite thing to shop vintage for is skirts. I’ve gotten through most of the winter wearing skirts every day thanks to a few gems I picked up on my last thrifting trip.
Favorite vintage items to shop for….definately jewelry, scarves and bags!
My favorite thing to thrift are skirts. Less wear and tear (no underarm stains!) and the silhouettes are easy to spot on the hanger.
I would pair the scarf with a mostly black outfit and style it the way Julie does in her tutorial on Orchid Grey. Then add my favourite teal earrings for a little extra spot of colour.
Hi! I love vintage shopping for funky accessories – like jewellry, bags, and scarves. Furniture and wall art are my second fave things to thrift! :)
As for the outfit, I’d probably wear something muted /gray or black jersey dress/, with a silver cuff, and drape the scarf once around my neck, letting the ends drape over my shoulder to show off that gorgeous print.
I would pair this great scarf with skinny jeans, white v-neck T and a great blazer. Keep the outfit very neutral and use the scarf for that pop of color!
Also, if I’m lucky enough to win I would try the ascot method!
So pretty!! Turquoise is one of my best colors. I love to wear this with something simple so the scarf would be the star!
I’ve had great luck shopping for vintage outerwear lately. I’ve picked up 4 gorgeous coats for all seasons and a great vintage leather cropped blazer this year. Scarves are also a favorite vintage find!
I’m always looking for vintage skirts and dresses!
I would love to try draping this scarf over a black dress for a pop of color!
Gorgeous scarf! I love shopping for vintage handbags – I just love the special details that you don’t see in today’s mass marketed bags.
My favorite thrifting items are cardigans and sweaters in a million different colors ;) like turquoise… and black…
I would love to add this gorgeous pop of color to my gray jersey wrap dress, most likely as a belt.
Grad school has left me too busy for thrifting, but when I lived in Ukraine, I went to second-hand stores for pretty much *everything*…skirts, tops, pants…and even a random copy of Trivial Pursuit!
This belt would be amazing as a faux blouse under a sweater, or as an obi belt. (I have to admit, I love the pattern and color so much that it hurts!)
on my most recent thrifting excursion, I found a NWT JCrew turquoise cardi that I think would match this scarf perfectly! and i think the black pattern on the scarf would really shine with the “pretzel tie” that A. debuted earlier this month :)
I think I would try the scarf with a black skirt, some sort of white/off-white top, and my black cardigan. I’ve never done much with square scarves, so I’d have to experiment with some new ways of tying!
I absolutely love finding a great pair of jeans at a thrift store. Almost all of my favorites have been thrifted.
I love hunting for old sewing kits and shoes (as gross as that is) at vintage shops! I can’t get enough!
As for styling this amazing scarf… I would most likely pair it with a navy sweater, my favorite jeans, and beaded flats. A scarf at jeans are my go-to weekend items.
Scarves, belts, and jewelry. ESPECIALLY brooches :-)
I don’t have a square scarf, and have lots of ideas for wearing one – I hope I win! :-)
I love thrifting skirts. A girl can never have enough skirts. :)
I don’t judge when I thrfit, I like it all…
I’m always inspired by those who find some wonderful thrifted items, but I have to admit I don’t seem to have the same luck. Perhaps a series on how to thrift would be useful. I do have a great wool skirt that I thrifted.
I would tie this scarf using the styles in Audi’s tutorial on Fashion for Nerds.
I like to thrift for necklaces!
And I would wear the scarf in a turban, Joan Collins-style. To the grocery store. In a caftan and gold shoes.
I’ve never shopped vintage, but since I just moved to atlanta, I know there are some awesome vintage places.
I’ve had the best luck not with clothes but accessories – handbags in particular. So unique!
I’m pretty short and little so vintage shopping is a joy for me because everything fits–even the tiny shoes! I just love finding one-of-a-kind items, from clothes to jewelry to shoes. I’m big into bakelite jewelry and am always delighted when I find the real deal!
I would wear it as a variation of the european knot…idk the name for it..
I’d wear it with a full skirt and booties. Lovely scarf!
Well after this post I might just have to start shopping vintage for scarves! Usually I like to thrift dresses though, more than once I’ve found a great dress to wear to a wedding for $20 or less.
What a beautiful scarf!
My favorite items to buy vintage are purses and jewelery. I am an accessories hog, though, so it fits!
I love thrifting accessories like purses and earrings because you are pretty much guaranteed no one else will have your item
Actually, once you guys started showing off your scarves, they’ve jumped to #1 on my list of things I look for when thrifting! I also like looking for shoes, jackets, skirts, and dresses.
That’s the most beautiful scarf you’ve shown off so far! I love it! I don’t know if it’s the right shape but would definitely like to try the sneaky knot with that one. Actually, I’d probably try every possible way of wearing that one, it’s just such a great colour!
I’d wear this scarf with my black velvet jacket, black jeans, and a plain tee. It’s a great focal piece!
what would I wear this scarf with? So many possibilities!
My top two:
A white tee shirt, black blazer, skinny jeans, and my yellow flats.
black t-shirt, my black and white tiered skirt and funky black boots.
I would tie it using the European knot.
Thanks so much for the opportunity!
My favorite thing to shop vintage is purses and bags. I feel like they have a story to them unlike a bag purchased in a department store.
My favorite item to shop vintage for would have to be bags. Or jewelry.
I would pair the scarf with a black cardigan, dark wash skinny jeans, and flats.
I would wear this scarf with a bright yellow shirt, dark denim jeans and cognac oxford flats.
I would use the European loop or just drape it and secure with a brooch.
Thanks!
Melanie
I LOVE shopping for vintage purses!
I love shopping for vintage purses!
I love shopping for vintage dresses! I love the prints and I feel more free to edit/change/cut the dress if it’s cheaper!
I’d wear this scarf with my new blazer!
I would DEFINITELY do what E. did and wear the scarf as a top over a black tank, tucked into a white skirt. It’ll show off the pattern more.
I would style this scarf with the tucking-both-ends-in method in the video you all linked from Orchid Grey a few days ago. I’ve been meaning to try that one, and it would put maximum coziness in front of my face.
I think I would wear it with dark jeans, and a white t-shirt to make the scarf color “pop”.
My favorite items to shop vintage are things that are expensive to buy new, yet people tend to buy and not wear too much–which to me means coats/jackets, scarves, and jewelry.
I love to look for vintage accessories.
I know some people hate the idea but I love vintage shoes. I have a pair of tall black boots by Bruno Magli from the 80s that are my go to shoes this winter.
boots and jewelry are the best.
i’d like to wear it as a headscarf. cute!
My favorite thing to shop vintage for is pins – no one seems to want them so I get them for a steal (especially the weird ones). My favorite right now is a medal in Mathematics.
I’d pair the scarf with a denim pencil skirt and white blouse for the spring and summer, with a contrasting belt (red? orange?) over it for another pop of color.
I think sunglasses are great for thrifting. I tend to lose those like crazy so it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of money, and you can often find some unique styles of vintage frames!
This is lovely! I would wear it in my hair or in place of a necklace somehow.
My favorite things to shop vintage for are hats, scarves, jewelry and household things.
I’d pair the scarf with a floaty, summery black tiered dress to try to make it more seasonally transitional!
my favorite items to shop for from vintage stores are accessories. older items are so unique and have such a history — you just cant find anything like them today!
if i won this lovely scarf, i would probably wear it tied either ascot style, or quite similar to how S. wore it here:
http://www.academichic.com/2010/02/11/11-february-2010/
i love the scarf piled chunkily beneath a fitted jacket!
I tend to shop for vintage handbags (thick leather coach bags from the 80s are a particular weakness).
My favorite things to shop vintage are ties (for my hair and as gifts to my partner), scarves, brooches, and bags. I love accessories! I also love vintage cashmere sweaters but they can be hard to find.
I would style this scarf around my waist with an all-black outfit and an orange belt (taking a cue from S. and Hermes).
I would wear this scarf with my (vintage!) black cashmere sweater, dark jeans, and black riding boots. I’d tie it in a pretzel knot, which is my favorite new way to tie a long scarf.
My favorite item(s) to shop vintage: skirts, belts, coats and scarves.
I like to thrift skirts!
I would wear this scarf in a drapey ascot sort of a way, with a black shift dress, black tights, and black ankle boots.
I have never thrifted clothes or accessories for my self, but I am really wanting to start after reading your blog! Usually when I thrift, it is for vintage dishes, tea cups, and books.
I’ve never shopped vintge before but I’ve been meaning to start! When I do get started, I will look for belts, scarves, and bags!
I would probably double it around my neck and do a side knot with the ends off to one shoulder, or as a head covering against the cold with a nice pair of shades. :)
I’ve never had much luck with vintage clothes — I often love vintage shoes, but ladies’ feet didn’t used to be so big as mine. So I guess purses are what I have the most success with.
What don’t I like to thrift? At this point, I only shop retail for intimate apparel (the thought of preowned socks, bras, and undies skeeves me out), when I need a very specific item in a hurry, and for specialty items like Victorian-style bustled skirts.
I’d wear this scarf with my blue-violet twist-neck top and the yellow-green skinny belt I found at Goodwill yesterday.
I love to thrift for vintage blazers and jackets. Buying a decent jacket or blazer new can be awfully expensive, and I’ve found so many gorgeous jackets at the thrift store for a fraction of the price.
I’d wear this scarf with my sea green tank top, my favorite white blazer, and my very dark wash jeans. I’d probably finish the look with my green chalcedony earrings and slouchy black leather boots.
I’d wear it as a statement piece with a European knot. What a beautiful scarf!
I love to thrift for vintage pendants and brooches. They give an outfit a retro feel regardless of how old they are, but it’s even more fun when they are actually vintage!
My favourite vintage things to shop for would be old silver jewelry – absolutely gorgeous!
This scarf would lend a stunning pop of color to my fsvorite black linen dress. I would use the ascot wrap to spruce up the neckline.
I would wear this scarf with a white t-shirt and dark brown wool trousers…I’d probably tie it using the sneaky knot, and have the scarf in place of a large necklace.
I love shopping for ANYTHING vintage – but probably top on my list is cute little floral dresses.
I would wear this scarf with my black shirt-dress in order to give it some silky color.
I love thrifting for jewelry, because the pieces are so unique!
I would wear this scarf as a skirt, if it’s big enough. Or maybe looped twice around my neck.
My favorite item to shop vintage for is brooches. I like that touch of Grandma chic with my outfit.
I’m currently on the hunt for somewhere to get some awesome vintage jewelry- brooches and clip on earrings (to use as shoe clips) but have not had luck yet.
I’d wear the scarf tied ascot style with a white tee, dark skinny jeans, black boots, and an oversized black cardigan. I’d add one of my grandmother’s brooches to the knot.
I always have to play with things before I know how I’ll wear them. I think the first things I’d try is to fold it and wear as a belt with a skinny belt over paired with some dark jeans and a cute top. I think it would also look cute to tied in an ascot tie with a grap top and my white eyelet poofy skirt.
My favourite items to shop vintage for are dresses (although they rarely fit – apparently I’m too tall for vintage!), skirts, and accessories.
I have a purple dress that I think this would like lovely with as (or under) a belt!
My all-time favorite thing to thrift/consignment shop for is vintage tees. I know, how original, right? But for the past 10 years (since I was able to drive myself there!) men’s and boy’s tees have been my first stop in the thrift stores. Always. Every garment tells a story, but tees tell of an era in pop culture, a city, an interest or an event. Love it!
Beautiful scarf!
my favorite thing to thrift is Halloween costumes, shirts and skirts, and occasionally accessories.
I love thrifting tops, I love the variety of thrift stores, and the fact that I can find current name brand fashions right next to adorable vintage pieces :)
I just stumbled across your blog recently and have really enjoyed it! I shop thrift and vintage for just about everything, including baby/kid stuff. Two of my favorite recent thrift finds were a cream-colored J. Crew skirt (with the tags still on it) for $6, and a hand-smocked and hand-embroidered vintage baby dress made out of pristine white corduroy for $3.
My favorite things to vintage shop for are accessories… jewelry especially, but also bags and scarves.
I would like to try this scarf in an “ascot-wrap” look – none of the scarves I have now are really conducive to that sort of tying. Also, I think it would look lovely tied loosely, so it floats a bit, or as a belt.
I look for dresses in thrift shops, although good ones are hard to find. After searching the dress rack, I usually take a look at blazers and jackets.
Love your blog, by the way. Not only it’s one of the most beautiful blogs that I’ve seen, but I love the intelligence behind the text. Carry on with the good work!
I would definitely wear it ascot-style. I’m loving that look with square, light weight scarves.
I would wear the scarf with my dark brown and blue skirt and in summer with white dress.
I’m quite tall, so it’s sometimes hard for me to find vintage clothing that’s long enough for me — in sleeves, inseams, etc. But I love looking for accessories, like scarves! Or finding jackets with sleeves soooo short I can call them three-quarter length!
I’d wear this scarf ascot-wrapped. I live in a hipster heaven (B-more, MD), and sometimes you just have to give in to the aesthetic!
I do a lot of thrift-store shopping, for more than just clothes. I’ve found some amazing kitchen items and vintage sewing supplies. I also buy a lot of children’s clothing, toys, and books. My favorite things to buy for myself are belts, bags and sweaters. I thrifted a lot of my maternity and post-baby clothes, too: better than spending a lot of money on clothes that I would only wear for a few months.
I just wanted to thank you ladies for putting together this very helpful and inspiring blog!
I’m a recently graduated, 26 year-old MA who just started adjuncting at two universities. I found your blog after getting yelled at for entering a faculty-only area at one of the universities where I teach, despite the fact that I am a faculty member. The person who yelled at me seemed to think I deserved it for looking and dressing the way I do. So, I decided while I can’t do anything about my girlish looks (haha!), I can step it up in the attire department! You all make it seem so easy and natural to look stylish and grown up without looking stuffy and old. Thanks!
As for thrifting, I rarely have the patience to sift through loads of undesirable items to find one decent thing. So, my thrifting is usually limited to small things, like accessories.
I love vintage purses. I think because it’s so rare to find one that is still in good shape. The best is when you find a vintage clutch that is spotless. Oh and jewelry — thrifted costume jewelry is the best.
vintage purses are wonderful! they have great histories and you can sometimes find a memento of a former owner inside!
I love to shop for accessories, especially pins, when vintage shopping. Dresses are another favourite vintage catch of mine.
the scarf would be great with a long-sleeved black T, white pants and red heels!
I would wear this scarf as a belt with my new Navy Blue shirt dress, teal coloured stockings and camel-toned Kenneth Cole Boots.
While vintage shopping I mainly love to shop for dresses, expecially florals and well fitting sheaths. I am also on the lookout for belts and scarves as they are plentiful in the stores around me and are cheap! :)
I would wear this scarf tied as a loose ascot with a fitted blazer and skinny jeans.
My vintage addiction is skirts! Generally wool skirts. I love the colors and the cuts.
I can think of so many ways to wear this scarf! It would be perfect as the single pop of color for an all black outfit, like black jeans and a black shirt or a LBD. It would also be great over a grey shirt, or even a gold shirt. I hope I win!! :o)
My favorite vintage item to shop for is the brooch. They’re so gorgeous, and can add an interesting touch to outfits.
I would wear this scarf ascot style with a black cashmere sweater.
I’m very new to thrifting so I only look for accessories, I don’t think I should get any more scarves, but maybe some skirts for spring?
Now that I know what to do with a square scarf, I would tie it in an ascot tie and wear it with a white tee, dark jeans, and bright orange flats! This is beautiful, whoever wins is lucky!
I actually haven’t shopped vintage clothes, but I love looking at vintage boots. It’s just so hard for me to buy them because well… I live in California. Boots aren’t super necessary!
Love the color! I would wear this with many things. I have one square scarf and I like to fold it into a triangle, tie the ends, then twist and knot the long part.
As for how I would wear this scarf… Either the sneaky knot that E. showed OR looping it around my neck and then tucking one end under the loop and pulling to one side (no idea what the name is, but it’s essentially a loose knot around your neck with the crossover on the side).
I love thrifting and vintage shopping, but I rarely go in with a specific item in mind. I just like to browse and see if I come up with anything amazing.
While I don’t thrift often (gasp!), when I get the chance I like to look for tops that provide a silhouette outside my modern norm.
Also I absolutely LOVE the scarf. Aqua is one of my favorite colors to play with so I’d probably try out the ascot tie, maybe with my coral cardigan for a nice complementary color scheme. However, you can guarantee this scarf will be used as a headband, belt, or anything else that I can figure out to get it in my wardrobe.
My favorite thriftable items are: sweaters, dresses, hats, knick-knacks, furniture and pulp novels from the ’50s.
I would tie that gorgeous scarf different ways–sneaky knots, ascot knots, headscarfy knots, euro knots, and more. With a scarf that big and beautiful, there are so many possibilities.
Lately, I’ve been on the prowl for scarves, jewelry, hats and belts.
So far, my thrifting has been limited to shopping for Halloween costumes. (so sad!) I want to get into it, though, I’m just overwhelmed by all the junk, I think. My goal for this year is to buy stuff to alter at home-as a part of learning to sew. You never, know, though, I might get hooked!
confession: I actually don’t shop for vintage things. I love handmade, one of a kind things on etsy….but I don’t have the patience for hunting in stores. Please don’t let that deter me from having a chance to win! the scarf is beautiful.
I would tie the scarf like Audi in her video tutorial-the first one featured, which is kind of a chunky knot wrap.
My favorite vintage thing to shop for is furniture–a great thing to do in Maine as the antique shops have wonderful, early-American future that is very inexpensive.
My favorite things to find in vintage thrift stores are jewelry and other accessories. There is a great little place here in my town that has vintage jewelry from various time periods. I love to just look around in there and I occasionally find that great buy.
I would wear this scarf in a French knot.
What a beautiful scarf! I don’t thrift much myself, but when I do it’s for accessories or home accessories.
I have been liking the pretzel/braid knot and the “fake” knot.
my favorite thing to look for when shopping vintage is 1950′s dresses – also, neat old hats and jewelry. i love looking for old things, the older the better! when i happen upon a store where nothing is newer than 1960, i couldn’t be happier :)
Ooohhh what a lovely gesture! And a lovely scarf to boot. My favorite thing to shop vintage actually isn’t clothes at all, I have a music box fetish. But if I find a nice vintage shift dress for a reasonable price, that’s not bad either.
I can’t say I have a true favorite item to look for in thrift shops, but I would say that sweaters, jackets and scarves top my list.
This HAS to be mine. I don’t have a teal scarf, and it would look great with the Misook black and teal jacket that I thrifted for $5 (versus the $200 or so it would have originally cost)! I’ve loved your scarf images. Thanks!
I don’t know any technical scarf-tying terms, but I would probably fold this scarf in half (making a big triangle) and wear it, point down, around my neck. Or perhaps wrapped twice as a headband.
This is a beautiful scarf – I would wear it as an ascot, but would get the most wears out of it on my head, babushka style, turban-tied, or headband-style with a giant bow.
On behalf of Christine Patete:
“And to be entered in the giveaway…I love thrifting for skirts. It seems like I can always find one that is unique and fits. If it’s a little long all it takes is a quick hemming and it’s perfect. “
On behalf of Christine Patete:
“And my favorite way to tie a scarf is one I learned from a friend who was selling hand made scarves from a small community in India. Loop a longer scarf around your neck so both end cross in back and hang in front, then take one side and pull up a loop of it through the piece wrapped around your neck and slip the other end through it and pull until desired tightness. The result is kind of a woven knot- a little more feminine than a basic mens tie knot and just a little different than your traditional knots. Hmmm hope I explained that clearly :) thanks again!
-christine”
Lovely giveaway! Lately I’ve been obsessed with thrifting oversized men’s button-up shirts. Whether tucked into skinny jeans on the weekends or into a pencil skirt on teaching days, I feel totally chic and comfy in them.
All winter I’ve been dying to do a scarf-poncho but I haven’t been able to find a scarf big enough! Then in spring I’d try it as a belt. Danke schoen S!
My favourite vintage items to shop for are accessories and in particular scarves. It’s diffcult for me to find vintage clothing pieces in my city because of my petite size, but scarves fit all bodies and are plentiful. Plus they are great for adding a splash of colour to neutral outfits.
I love those colors, and how fun of it to be from abroad! I’d wear it with some vintage brooches of my grandmother’s,draped over my long black dress to go out for dinner.
I would want this scarf to be the focus of the outfit so I would wear it with neutral colours, perhaps a pair of denim with a black blouse, or a neutral coloured jersey dress. I would fold the scarf once to make a triangle and then tie it around my neck so that the big portion of the triangle hangs down the front of the outfit.
This is such a great giveaway…beautiful colours and patterns.
Holy cow is that a gorgeous scarf!
Actually my favorite items to shop vintage are home things – I have some old lamps and old jars and things for my kitchen that came from garage sales and flea markets. But maybe that doesn’t count since you were really asking about style. Of things to wear I think my favorite vintage items are jewelry. I’d love to be more adventurous with finding other vintage clothing.
I’d tie it around my head, or try the Ascot – I haven’t done that yet. Maybe with my black jacket. I love teal and red together, but I can’t tell from the pic if that scarf is a bold enough teal to work with red.
I’ve had the best luck vintage shopping for jackets. I work in a professional office, and I rarely go a day without using a jacket in my outfit. It just makes it easier. And scarves are a STAPLE for jackets, especially since I don’t like the feel of wool or other scratchy textures next to my neck.
I’ve had good luck thrifting for shoes; I once found heavy-duty winter boots (water-proof and warm as hell due to rabbit fur) for $17 at a vintage store. They’ve kept my feet warm in Chicago winters like no other shoes have.
I would tie the scarf ascot-style. It’s almost too hipster for my tastes but I like the aesthetic and it’s surprisingly warm. I’d pair it with my favorite teal earrings to make the colors pop.
I love shopping vintage for coats! Especially classic styles like peacoats or trenchcoats…
That scarf is in my favorite color!
As a plus-size woman, it is difficult to find my size in thrift shops, so I always go looking for accessories. Scarves and purses are my two favorite things to shop for.
I would wear this scarf as a “surprise scarf” under a blazer to add some pop to a teacher outfit, as demonstrated here: http://www.academichic.com/2010/02/16/16-february-2010-spot-the-scarf/
I really love the color of this scarf…it is really beautiful. I would wear it with various colors.
My favorite thing to shop for would have to be skirts. I don’t usually find one I like, but I do, it’s awesome.
Also, I would just wear it around my neck, folded in half, and looped through. Nice and simple.
my favorite is to shop for brooches.
Just discovered your blog — love it!! I like to look for scarves and funky jewelry.
I love to shop for dresses and jewelry at vintage shops. You never know what you find!
I like to shop accessories at vintage shops – jewelry, purses, belts.
I can probably wear this scarf as a nice belt ;)
styling the scarf (which is gorge, by the way)- I’d do the triangle tie (kind of like ascot, but bigger?) and wear it with my black velvet blazer, a silver tank underneath, and cute jeans. That scarf would also make a cute headband!
I love to shop for vintage for two things: jewerly and purses!
I like thrifting for picture frames.
I don’t shop for vintage that often but I’ve come up w/ some real treasures when I have. The last piece I bought was a beautiful cameo brooch that I scored for just $5. I love it!
My favorite vintage shopping item would have to be vintage lace. I used to look for more jewelry. But lately, I have developed a thing for vintage lace – I just love the craftsmanship and quality and it adds such a nice touch to any clothes I pin or sew it on.
I would wear the scarf around my neck, possibly as a way to brighten up an all black outfit.
If I could tie the scarf the same way you have it draped on the branch that’s how I’d wear it! Haha! I am new to scarfs and am really digging the “sneaky knot” right now.
Love the colors on this scarf and so many ways to wear it. But my first thought was to wear it with a plain black jersey dress as a belt or paired with a mustard yellow skirt/white top/fitted black jacket.
I like thrifting for one-of-a-kind dresses, especially those from the swingin’ 60s! The wool from that era is, in my opinion, far superior to the stuff they use nowadays.
My favorite vintage item(s) are accessories (scarves, belts, etc). I would looove to have some vintage dresses, but I don’t have the time (or maybe luck) to spend constantly hunting for my very common size.
Love this scarf! I think I would try to wear it as an obi style belt as was recently shown over my little black dress to as some flair and color! Also- love that it came all the way from Europe- what a great conversation starter!
As for styling the scarf, I’d try it as a belt on a simple dress, or to give a pop of color and visual interest to the plain brown tweedy blazer I frequently wear on business trips.
I love to thrift vintage brooches, jewelry and old photos (I find they make really cute cards).
I’ve never shopped vintage or thrifted – being very petite but a bit bottom-heavy, I find it hard enough to find clothes that fit in well-stocked stores. The hit and miss of thrifting I just don’t have the patience for. But I have been inspired by some of the unique finds on here and may try it this summer when I’m off (I’m an academic too).
The scarf is beautiful. I’ve been told to keep black away from my face so I have been looking for pops of color to go with black neutrals. This is perfect. I also would try it with my many orange sweaters to keep from looking too Halloween-y with black bottoms.
My favorite item to shop vintage is skirts!
I’d like to try this scarf with one of my many black dresses and reddish-oranges boots.
I don’t often shop vintage, but when the opportunity arises, I love looking for skirts – and home decor pieces! (…which usually invariably means I get to play with different skirt hemlines, which is also part of the charm for me!)
lovely scarf!
my favotite items to shop vintage for are coats – winter esp. Some of them are so retro that they are back on trend again or even timely (e.g. the ever-fashionable trench or classic peacoat).
Thanks for the chance to win!
teri
you know, this scarf is so amazing on its own, i would really want it to “pop” by wearing an all black pants suit and perhaps tying it “kerchief style” to show off the different design details. beautiful.
Thanks as always. :)
teri
I love to shop vintage skirts, men’s shirts, and jewelry! Skirts are great because usually fit is a minimal issue, and you can get some seriously funky colors and patterns.
I loooove this scarf… my favorite color! I would want to show off the color so I might wear it near my face as a head wrap, sort of babushka-style, with a cinched/sleeve-rolled jacket, jeans, and some seriously heavy metal boots. And sunglasses. …i have no idea where i would actually wear that…oh the life of an academic!
I absolutely LOVE vintage shoes. It’s the first thing I check out. I also love vintage jewellery, which is so fun and quirky.
I’ve been rocking the belted scarf all fall and I find that it works best with thick, full scarves like this one. I have yet to try it with a dress or skirt, however, and I would love to debut this scarf – belted – with my usual all-black teaching attire, specifically a black high-waisted tulip-skirt. The pattern is fantastic!
My favorite items to shop vintage are dresses, belts, and scarves. Love, love, love the satisfaction of finding a fabulous vintage dress.
As for the tying technique, I don’t have many square-ish scarves, so this would be perfect for trying the ascot-style, as well as the belted scarf style (under my skinny black belt!), under some sort of blank canvas (shirt or dress or…)!
I love the turquoise and black pattern on this scarf. It almost looks henna-ed. Silk squares are my favorite style because they are so versatile and can be worn dozens of different ways.
Beautiful scarf! I find myself reaching for scarves in similarly bold colours all the time at the moment. I just moved to Montreal (from Europe) and the Winter is so much colder and longer, you really need a splash of colour to make you feel better.
Anyway, about thrifting- I love looking for handbags and jewellery, and then wondering about the story behind my finds…
On a more general note, thanks for Academichic. I love reading your posts whenever I come into the office and before I get to work. It really helps me ease into the day.
Vintage shopping: bags, purses, cute sweaters, skirts!
Oh sorry, forgot about tying technique. I’d love to try the sneaky knot- I like the way it lengthens the body and makes the scarf the central element of the outfit.
I would love to use this scarf and wear it like a cowl scarf! :)
I haven’t shopped vintage in a while, but when I had more time, I used to LOVE to buy bellbottoms! Although I’m now more of a skinny-jean kind of girl, I loved my bells and loved showing the world my usually-quiet inner hippie.
I love to vintage shop for brooches. They can look so classy on a pretty blouse or scarf!
I’m always looking for shoes when I go thrifting. I might not get lucky very often, but it’s the first on my list to browse for! That, and a good dress. Unique dresses are so fun to find!
I love the way S. layered a belt over an obi-like wrapped scarf, and I think this scarf would look smashing in that style!
I would try to wear this scarf as a belt over a gray dress with some cute black pumps.
I’m imagining that scarf – ascot style – with my dark skinnies, a black sweater, and yellow pumps. Of course, I might also try it with a full black skirt, black turtleneck, and black pumps for a pop of color.
I love to shop for vintage items! Its like a treasure hunt – you never know what you’re going to find. I look for just about anything but underwear or socks. I love finding old tablecloths/napkins as well.
definitely my favorite thing to shop vintage is skirts!
whatwouldanerdwear@gmail
and definitely would wear it in an ascot knot with my gray dress and flats.
I’d wear this scarf as a headband, or around my neck with a low knot at the end. Perfect on a LBD!
My favorite items to thrift are purses (especially ’50s and ’60s ones) and ’50s and ’70s jewelery.
I go vintage over mostly everything! however, scarves, necklaces and bracelets are the definite winners.
My favorite vintage item to shop for is jewelry.
I would wear this scarf probably with everything I own lol, it’s my favorite color, but I think I’d love to pair it with a red tee and jeans, with the scarf in my hair. It’d also look great around my neck over my eggplant wrap dress.
That scarf is a stunner. I think I could probably wear it with almost half of the clothes in my closet. My favorite way is to fold it into a rectangle and tuck it into my v neck sweaters. However, your previous posts have really been inspiring me to try new ways of scarf wearing!
I’d go for an all black ensemble with the scarf and a pair of red flats as the pop of colour and to add a funky feel to it all.
The only vintage thing I have shopped for is a mouton fur coat that is GORGEOUS!
I know it’s not clothes fashion, but maybe apartment fashion? I love to shop for vintage glass bottles in various colors and shapes. They are wonderful bright colors and have multiple uses in my apartment.
Though I don’t thrift too often, I’ve had the best luck with finding vintage jewelry and kitchenware. Thank you for the chance at a beautiful giveaway!
That scarf is beautiful, and one of my favorite colors! I would wear it like a kercheif – folded in half diagonally, and tied with the point down.
If I was lucky enough to have such a scarf, I would wear it with a pretty plain ensemble – maybe a cute little black dress and flats. With turquoise earrings, of course! :)
my favorite thrifted items are skirts and dresses…i have a hard time with pants, thrifted or not, and I feel like skirts and dresses are really easy to alter and play around with. thanks!
my whole closet is full of gray, turquoise/teal, and dark brown solids (I somehow just realized this a week or two ago). the scarf would allow me to add pattern and flow to my wardrobe…instead of just solid top, solid pants/skirt, I could actually look a little more intentional and/or put together!
My favorite item to shop vintage for is formal wear. I bought my prom dresses and college formal dresses all vintage. I felt special and unique–no one had the same dress as me! I also more recently purchased a vintage lined wool wrap. I’m not sure where I will wear it yet, but it certainly has character.
The color in the vintage scarf is great. I would fold it into a kind of obi-style belt and wear it with my little black dress or over a white dress shirt with trousers.
My favorite item to shop vintage for is shoes! I know a lot of folks are squicked out by already-worn shoes, but for me the magic is in finding that perfect mix of style + size + bargain.
I love to shop for tablecloths at vintage shops. That way I can dress up my table in different looks for a minimum cost and I’m not worried about food stains.
I would tie this scarf around my neck like a cowboy would – how’s that for a description!
My favorite item to shop vintage is jewelry. It rarely goes out of style and the older stuff is almost always better made than buying new.
I can definitely see this scarf as part of a casual spring look, like white jeans and a navy blazer. I’ve really been wanting to try the “ascot” tie and this one seems big enough to do that — or maybe as a headband!
I like to shop for EVERYTHING vintage!!! Jeans, sweaters, shirts, scarves, belts, etc. Nothing is off limits! :)
I’d wear the scarf draped around my neck. I love the colors and pattern of it.
I love to shop for vintage coats & dresses. I am 5’10 so I really have to look to find items that have long enough sleeves.
I would wear this scarf with a black dress and a purple cardigan. I think it would be interesting to have a scarf that came from Germany.
beautiful scarf! I love searching vintage shops for rings, silk scarves and sweaters. When you find a good already loved sweater it’s a magical feeling.
I love to shop for vintage boots and belts.
I like to thrift for skirts and household accents (like vases, candlesticks, etc)! I’m very petite and most clothing requires a lot of alteration to fit.
I would try the sneaky knot (if it is a large enough square).
my favorite thing to buy vintage is skirts!
and the blue scarf, lovely! i would wear it as “top” as you ladies have with a my cropped gray silk jacket, and black pencil skirt.
I love thrifting jewelery; you find SUCH cool things. I have the coolest bracelet with the 10 commandments on it. Plus, sometimes you can find real gemstones at fake gemstone prices; score!
I’m always looking out for vintage scarves and belts in the thrift store
I would wear this scarf kerchief style (with a small chain looped around it) with a brown turtle neck, white cord and chocolate colored boots.
Materials for craft projects–many a sheet has been converted into a wearable. Other household items, like furniture, plates, etc.
Beautiful scarf! I just discovered your blog and think it’s lovely with lots of great ideas. I love to thrifting for vintage broaches, skirts, and dresses.
I’m more of a thrift or consignment store shopper than a vintage store shopper, but if I’m in a vintage store I gravitate towards the shoes, gloves, coats, and scarves.
When I was in grad school, I had excellent luck thrifting dresses, but the stores out west were better. Here on the east coast, I find sweaters are my best thrifting finds.
I would try the second and last scarf tie shown on this video with this gorgeous scarf: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01EltMQ189I&feature=related
I live in an area with just a few very limited thrift stores, but I love finding dresses there, even if they’re highly impractical! I also like to look for casual skirts.
As for the scarf, I’d likely wear it with a green sweater and try out the ascot wrap!
My favorite items to shop vintage for? Honestly, it’s assorted kitchenware – usually cake plates! But in response to dress it’s accessories. They are easiest because they are usually lightly used and ‘always’ fit.
How would I style this? With my little brown dress(es) – you see I don’t like myself much in black so brown is my LBD.
I like to shop vintage for jewelry, brooches, and scarves. Still on the hunt for a nice little cameo brooch!
I think I’d like to try the ascot wrap. I’d wear it with a dark purple 3/4 sleeve jacket, black tee, jeans, and black-and-white print flats (for a little bit of pattern mixing!).
i love the ascot wrap for scarves that are patterned
obsessed with looking for purses are thrift stores. i love when they’re already broken in a little bit. it’s like they have a story to tell!
My favorite thing to look for at Thrift Stores is home decor items, honestly. I’ve found some very nice paintings (some worth hundreds of dollars) for very little. As for apparel and accessories, I love to look for pretty much everything….you find some surprises (like my new-looking JBrand jeans I found for $4).
I love the scarf for this week’s giveaway!
In my town, it seems that I have better luck shopping vintage for accessories such as belts, scarves, or bags. Haven’t had much luck with the clothing department unfortunately.
I would probably wear this scarf tied around my waist as a belt, or looped like a necklace. The color is perfect for this time of year!
I really want a square scarf, but I have yet to find one. I’d probably style it with an ascot tie since that one seems pretty popular. I think it would look great with my simple black dress, tights and dark brown boots.
Vintage brooches and gloves all the way for me – scarves and bags a v close second.
Beautiful scarf!
My favorite item to shop vintage for is definitely jewelry. A funky piece can really liven up an outfit and give it a one of a kind look.
I would wear this scarf over a crisp white button up shirt, skinny jeans, and brogues. I’ve desperately wanted a pair of brogues and I think this would be a cute look!
What don’t I thrift for? :) In fact, my Mom is visiting from SC and we’ve got a thrifting trip planned for today!! My last trip I found a great pair of red peep toe pumps and a patterned silk blouse.
To style the scarf, I think I’d use it to liven up a white blouse/black pencil skirt combo.
I like thrifting for jeans, and accessories. Actually, there’s a sort of “used” shoe store in my hometown that repairs shoes and resells them, and also sells shoes that have been used once in catalog shoots. That is my favorite shoe store, period.
I think this would look gorgeous as a dramatic drape over something basic, like a black dress.
My favourite item to thrift for would have to be shoes – I love finding barely worn, well-made shoes (or boots!) and then bringing them and adding them to my outfits. I thrift just about everything in my wardrobe, but I still think shoes are my favourite, and the place I usually stop off first.
I would tie this scarf in a little woven way that I know. It’s a bit tough to describe, and I’ll see if I can find a link online, but you wind up with this lovely little basketweave right at the front that adds some really nice visual interest, and I think it would be lovely with a pattern like the one on that scarf.
My favorite item to thrift is boots, vintage boots always have the most character!
The skies the limit when it comes to thrifting. If I see something that I like and know that I will get use out of it will become mine.My recent favorite thrift item is a black 1980′s necklace that reminds me of Wilma Flintstone. It is a lot of fun!
I would put this awesome scarf with a white tee, dark denim jeans, and some tall brown boots
The size of the scarf would determine how I would wear it. My husband recently reminded me how I dressed on our first date. Apparently, I wore a scarf around my waist and hip (like a gypsy so he says). He said it was cute. A man blinded by love obviously. LOL
I am almost tempted to try that look again and see if it would work nowadays.
My favorite things to thrift are… just about everything, but mainly beautifully tailored blazers and colorful vintage scarves.
I like to thrift dresses – dresses from the 60s are typically perfect for me to wear to work.
I have the best luck thrifting belts – I got my favorite skinny brown belt for $1 at Goodwill!
As for how to fold the scarf… I’m going to go with in the pretzel knot? I think thats what you all called it. I’ve been wearing it a lot recently, and maybe with the patterns in this scarf, the know would look even more intricate?
I think I’d wear this scarf belted over a black jersey dress with tights and boots.
I love thrifiting for dresses. I always feel guilty spending a lot of money on dresses but this way I have fun pieces to experiment with.
I would wear the scarf as the focus piece with a black dress or another monochrome outfit.
I love shopping for vintage blazers!
I love the knot from the other day where you just tie a knot in one side of the scarf and put the other end through! I wore it last night in fact :)
I love to hunt for handbags!
I love searching for vintage belts!
I would wear this scarf with a brown leather jacket – I think the color would really pop.
I think that my favorite items to thrift for are, in order awesomeness, leather jackets, shoes (because where else am I going to find forest green Docs for under $15) and skirts. There’s something about thrift-ing leather jackets that makes me feel better about wearing a dead animal.
This scarf I’d wear loose and cozy with a cropped leather jacket and a nice pair of jeans tucked into my slouchy taupe boots. Totally relaxed but with enough colour to pop.
That scarf is beautiful! When I go thrifting I always look for vintage patterns first. I love them! I can’t sew but I have a stack of patterns waiting for me to learn how to make them. I also love looking for vintage brooches. They are so fun.
I would tie the scarf using the ascot method because I’ve been wanting to try it but I don’t have anything the right shape.
When I go thrifting, I like to look for tops. I tend to be conservative with color and pattern, so I look for tops with unique and interesting details.
My favorite things to thrift are scarves and skirts. I rarely buy skirts at full price and there is an abundance of them at my favorite thrift store. Scarves are fun to shop for and easy to take a style risk with; a scarf with wild colors and patterns used as an accent piece is an understated yet interesting way to add a little spunk to an outfit.
I would wear this scarf knotted at the neck, with the ends laced through the knot and tied in the back. I saw this technique in the Hermes .pdf you posted and I love it! It completed an outfit I recently wore for an interview but it also looks great with a casual v-neck t-shirt and jeans.
My favorite things to thrift are dresses, graphic button down shirts and cashmere sweaters.
p.s. I love your blog!
What a gorgeous scarf!
I love vintage and thrift shopping. I think my favorite item to buy that way is dresses; I have a couple of amazing thrifted vintage dresses. It’s hard to choose, though! So many lovely things just waiting to be found.
I would wear this scarf in the sneaky knot over a crisp white blouse and top it off with a brown velvet jacket and chunky silver jewelry. The background looks brown on my monitor. If it’s black, I would do it with black.
xo, E
I think I’d wear this scarf tied as an ascot with a purple sweater and jeans. This summer it would look fab in my hair for a little color with a black shirt and brown skirt.
My favorite vintage items to shop for are dresses. I like to imagine why the previous owner bought the dress — a wedding? Job interview? Hot date? Plus, it’s a whole outfit in one piece of clothing. So easy!
I would pair the scarf with something complementary — pink or reddish. I’ve been getting into the turquoise-red combo lately. Two of my favorite colors.
I love shopping for plus size vintage finds!
and i’d wear it ascot-style. most definitely!
My fave part about thrifting/buying vintage are the skirts and dresses. So much more feminine and flirty than current styles.
I love thrifting accessories and coats …. regular clothes are too difficult to fit, but scarves and belts are lovely.
I would love to pair this with a simple shift dress, probably a solid color unless a more fashion-savvy friend tells me that any prints or patterns are acceptable.
I love to shop for vintage jewelry!
Never know what you may find.
In vintage shops, I like to find new (old?) shoes. A great way to try new styles.
As for the scarf, I live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and would absolutely use the hipster ascot type fold to add a splash of color to a basic jeans and sweater number.
My favorite things to shop for are old Pyrex pieces. So lovely! But clothing and accessories-wise, I would definitely say jewelry.
my favorite item to shop vintage is belts! I think accessories are just much easier than clothes to find thrifted.
Ooh…I would wear this beautiful scarf with my black jersey shift dress and my bronze woven belt. thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
I am glad I discovered your blog. 90% of my wardrobe is thrifted. I enjoy shopping for sweaters in lux materials to restyle and jeans — so many brands in one place.
This beautiful scarf would fit into my wardrobe seamlessly. The color matches with almost everything I wear. My favorite scarf knot is folding the scarf in half and tucking the ends through the loop.
I’m in love with the double french loop ( I think that’s what it’s called). I have been tying my scarves in that manner since I read your post with the scarf bibliography.
Dresses! I love to shop vintage dresses because it’s a sure way I can guarantee I’ll be the only one wearing it for a party!
How would I wear this scarf? I’d like to try an ascot–I’ve never worn a scarf with an ascot knot before!
On behalf of Natalia Schaeffer:
I would take one of two paths with said scarf…
For a casual look, lining the neck of a navy or black blazer, over jeans and low heels or boots, or…
For a dressier look, belting an above-the-knee length black cowl-neck sweater dress, with opaque blue tights and black boots. I would fold it into a wide-ish band and tie it behind me, with the ends tucked in for a smooth cummerbund look.
On behalf of Natalia Schaeffer:
Hi!
My favorite vintage find (other than a gorgeous silk scarf) is a nice 50s/60s vintage shirtwaist. I love how they fit through the bodice, and the full skirt is just an unbelievable feeling, especially with a (not super-flouncy) crinoline beneath it. I know the look is somewhat dated, but I think my middle name is “Retro!” I like to combine one with a nice head scarf for springy outdoor functions.
All the best…
Natalie
Scarves, belts and other accessories :-)
Thrift shop for boots.
i love love love thrift/vintage shopping for chunky necklaces. love it.
When I thrift I generally find myself buying shoes.
I’d wear this scarf with many of my casual outfits.
My favorite items to shop vintage for are dresses with cute prints and full skirts, brooches, and purses.
I would wear this as a headscarf via Leproust Vintage’s 40′s Scarf Tutorial with a vintage dress in contrasting colors.
Jeans, because I cannot afford new ones, and jewelry, because I like older designs.
I really love thrift-shopping for dresses and have had a lot of success finding ones I like. I think dresses are easy to do small alterations without needing to be too talented at sewing. Shortening straps or hems–that I can handle.
I think I would try tying the scarf in the ascot wrap I saw in one of your scarf bibliography links.
I would try the “sneaky knot” with this beautiful scarf!
I also love thrift shopping for dresses. I have found the greatest vintage shift and fitted dresses for great prices!
I like to thrift dresses, but also belts and scarves.
I would love to try the obi-belt, with this scarf underneath a skinny red belt. BTW, thanks for the great tutorials and the links you’ve been giving this month!
I thrift designer jeans. There’s nothing like finding a $100 pair of jeans for almost nothing!
I’m rather tall so find vintage shopping to be a bit of a challenge. I do love looking for accessories, though. Also, skirts and jackets. You can find some adorable vintage thing. I’m a big fan of tailoring the things I find, especially tops.
Square…I’d fold it on the diagonal and then bunch it rather than keep folding it, and then tie it in a loose knot. I’d keep the knot low, though.
I love the color and would probably pair it with a dark purple or brown top.
Love the color. My favorite thrift item at the moment is skirts. Love finding (what are now) unique patterns. :)
I’d tie this scarf ascot style, and wear with a blazer, basic t, and jeans.
All my favorite pieces of jewelry are vintage finds. I love going to estate sales and finding art deco or enamel jewelry — it definitely feels like treasure hunting!
I would wear this scarf with a short, boxy black dress. I would form the scarf to have lots of folds around my shoulders and neck to add drama and shape to the outfit, then maybe cinch a black belt around my waist to keep everything in place. A nice, shapely ankle boot with textured tights would finish the look.
Beautiful scarf–would love to have it! I think I would either drape it without knotting it, and wear it with either a crushed velvet blazer or a corduroy one. For a casual look, I would pair that with skinny jeans and brown boots with a heel. Or for a dressier/professional look, I would pair that with a boot cut trouser and sling back heels. And of course, either look would be topped off with a dangle leaf set of earrings.
I like to thrift shop for dress shirts, blazers, and cropped jackets. I also like to shop vintage/thrift/garage sale for pieces here and there for my kids. I find so many things with tags still attached.
I’ve been looking for bags and scarves when I shop vintage.
I’d like to pair this with a ribbed turtleneck, jeans and black boots.
In terms of shopping vintage, I’m currently hunting for shoes, belts, and scarves, though I’m always excited if I find a dress.
I have to confess, I’ve been looking scarves a lot more since the start of your scarf month!
Also, if I won the scarf giveaway, I’d love to play around with the ascot tie. I’ve already used that with a smaller square scarf I have, but I don’t have any larger square scarves yet. What I’d be really excited about, though, is wearing this scarf in an outfit with a pair of teal tights I have.
Vintage bags are fantastic — sometimes hard to find, but so worth the hunt!
In the spirit of bags, I’d love to tie this one on the handle of a black croc embossed back. Softness and color against a structured vintage frame bag.
Favorite item to shop for at vintage stores: Shoes!!
Way to wear scarf: with my classic BR belted trench :).
I like shopping for vintage brooches.
I like to shop for vintage knick-knacks, furniture, and jewelry. I like to bead so I’m pretty handy to fix clasps, re-string beads, convert brooches, and replace chains.
I think I would wear that scarf with a white or cream top, grey slacks or indigo jeans, and my purple patent flats.
I love vintage jewelry. Generally inexpensive, it is always a conversational piece and inevitably results in a compliment from a complete stranger.
i’m really digging the ascot method so far. i am new to scarves so it is so interesting to read new methods from such stylish ladies.
This scarf would look great as “spot the scarf” like E. wore.
I am looking forward to trying that style and this would be the perfect scarf.
i’ve actually never owned a square scarf before, but i would love to try the ascot method with this one :)
i like shopping for vintage accesories – jewelry, belts, handbags… they all add a great touch to any basic outfit.
I like to shop for vintage purses/handbags, though just a couple days ago I found some great jewelry as well. Primarily it’s items that withstand time and usage well.
The ascot tying method would really show off the print on this vintage beauty!
This would brighten up any plain T-shirt, dress, or sweater.
I would wear this scarf with just about any solid colored outfit :)
I like to shop for vintage evening purses. I look at them as works of art. Love your blog!
I think the scarf would look great with an all black outfit.
I love shopping for vintage shoes. Being able to score the perfect shoe in your size is so satisfying! :)
I love shopping for jewlery. I can always find something unique.
I would leave it peeking out from underneath a all black ensemble. I love turquoise. It adds a nice pop to all black. Sleek and sophisticated.
