This is yet another experimental outfit!  There are multiple sources of inspiration for today’s look.  Obviously, much of this ensemble is inspired by S.  S. has been rocking the shorts and tights look all season and I’ve loved it on her.
My mom gave me these tweed trouser shorts a few years ago for my birthday.  I wore them in that rare weather window when tweed was appropriate and it was warm enough to wear shorts with flats and a sweater, but they have been mostly sitting in my closet.  I decided to given them a try with tights. I wanted to make sure this was a dressier take on the shorts trend, since today is a teaching day for me, so I paired them with black pumps.

While I love this vest and have worn it a few times already, I’m still fighting a bit of a vest learning curve. I like how the vest with shorts makes for a school-boy inspired ensemble.  I layered the vest over another sweater (over a tee) for warmth and doubled my tights.

I think the scarf adds quite a bit of needed visual interest to this outfit.  I love the pattern on this scarf and am always trying to find new ways to incorporate it into an outfit.   This loose bow to the side was inspired by the pages of the most recent J Crew catalog.  It felt rather fussy when I first tied it on, but I think paired with such an otherwise  structure outfit it works well.   have you jumped on the tights and shorts bandwagon yet?

I don’t know if you are interested in some constructive criticism, but here goes:

I like the silhouette of the shorts on you. They are very flattering. I would have preferred the shoes and shorts with sheer black nylons rather than the opaque black tights.

I am not a big fan of the vest in this outfit, I think that the sweater might have been nicer with the scarf without the vest.

I like the bow on the scarf, very chic, and your hair and make up are very classy and elegant.

I just don’t know how I feel about the shorts and tights trend. I like it on other people most of the time, but I just don’t know about on myself. However, I’ve been wanting to try it with a longer short like this one, so you’ve given me an opening to try… so we’ll see…

  3. Nerd Girl says:

I will not be wearing shorts and tights this go ’round. I wore this 20 years ago (gasp!) in college and loved it then but think I’m going to abide by the adage that if you wore a look the first time around, pass on it the next time.

I think you all look adorable in the shorts/tights combo. I do agree with the first commenter in that the vest could’ve been omitted.

You look really good, A. I feel the school-boy vibe you’re talking about, and I think it’s a nice and unexpected outfit for class.
I’m desperate to try the shorts-tights look, I’m thinking of getting a pair tailored.
I guess S. has inspired a lot of us with those shorts!

I am going to try that bow sometime this month! How fun!

I’ve never looked good in shorts, let alone shorts + tights… but I halfway like the idea.

My elementary school teachers wore pleated trouser-shorts with colored pantyhose. It’ll take me awhile to forget that association and open my heart to shorts and tights. =)

  7. Clare says:

I LOVE the shorts on you, and I really like the inspiration for the scarf, too!

  8. Audi says:

I just wore shorts with tights today in fact; inspired by S! These slim-fitting shorts are a great fit and length on you, and the scarf is a nice finishing touch.

  9. J. says:

Cute outfit! I love the pop of color, the pattern of the scarf, the tying of the scarf. Really lovely!

But alas, I have not jumped on the tights + shorts bandwagon. Could be that I don’t own tights. =P

  10. catherine_sr says:

I like the length of the shorts… they kind of remind me of the knickerbockers for women that were in fashion during the 1970s.

  11. Kathryn says:

I’m not so sure about the tights and shorts trend. I’ve watched other people work it all winter, but I just don’t think it’s me. As soon as I saw this picture I thought European schoolboy. I’m glad that you made the association too. I probably would have dove into it headlong and worn an actual tie instead of the scarf and maybe a cropped blazer as well.

  12. Marci says:

I just bought some brown and purple tights and plan on “renovating” some old dress pants into shorts this weekend! I’m going to a grad school recruitment weekend in Arizona and am totally going to attempt the shorts/tights look, possibly with a silk scarf too. Now for the shoes…

  13. Jane Winkler says:

Those shorts are so flattering on you, and the bow provides a great contrast to an otherwise structured silhouette while still keeping with the “schoolboy” look (think of a tie mussed after recess).

    Your risk paid off!

  14. Sally says:

I’ve tried (evidence here http://www.alreadypretty.com/2009/11/outfit-roundup-week-of-november-15.html), but just don’t think it suits me. Definitely suits you, though, A!

  15. meg says:

I have so enjoyed watching S. sport the winter shorts but have wondered several times how the trend might look with slightly longer shorts. I like it on you! Kudos for wearing them on a teaching day. The dark tights and dark shoes combo works to elongate your legs, which I think would be a little more important when the shorts extend down to your knee.

  16. miss robin says:

Love the outfit. Like Nerd Girl, I did the look already, but you look terrific. And imho the vest is perfect–balances the black tights and gives a professional polish-as that third piece (vest, jacket, cardi) usually does. You rock it!

  17. I’m curious about the print of the scarf. It looks pretty. Definitely love the bow.

  18. sabrina says:

Love the formal winter shorts. I really want to get on this trend but haven’t had time/money for shopping. You and S. look great!

  19. gina says:

Great shorts! Love this look on you

  20. Nadine says:

I like this look – the scarf really pulls it together. I LOVE the shorts and tights look, but it’s summer here . . . I don’t like WEARING shorts, myself, since my inner thighs can cause the inseams to hike northward in a vexing bunchy fashion. But I do love the look so much that I will give it a go in a few months.

(I often wish style blogs had a ‘Six Months Ago Today’ archive feature for us opposite-hemisphere followers – what do you reckon?)

  21. The scarf really adds a lot of interest to the outfit, good job!
