BabyEtte over on Etsy sent us a few of these incredible “Neck Scapes.” I have to be honest – when I first put these layers of jersey around my neck this morning, I was skeptical. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to wear it, how many times to wrap it around my neck, how it should lay, and what I should wear with it, but after a few sweater/shirt changes and a bit of playing, I am sold! It’s surprisingly warm and cozy and received many compliments on it today. I’m excited to play around with it some more.
BabyEtte “Neck Scape”, originally uploaded by academichic. The rest of today’s outfit is also a bit of an experiment. A friend gave me this wool mini skirt and challenged me to give it a try. This skirt is completely outside my usual comfort zone: it’s short, it has front patch pockets, it’s tulip shaped, and it has polka-dots. But, for some reason it appealed to me and I was surprised to like it once it was on.
Skirt Detail, originally uploaded by academichic.I definitely need opaque tights to be conformable with the length and because it is sitting so low on my hips, I needed a longer top. I don’t know why I am being so matchy-matchy this week, but I kind of like the purple tights mirroring the purple “Neck Scape.” I decided to wrap this rather bulky sweater a bit tighter and belt it. I think (at least from far away) it looks like an asymmetrically buttoned cardigan.
For extra warmth, I layered a long sleeve tee and a short sleeve tee under the cardigan and doubled my tights. I finished it all off with the perfect snow storm accessory – my new, much loved, Banana Republic wellies.
What do you think of the “Neck Scape”?

I really kind of want to steal this outfit right now! I love the purple and the skirt is to die for! It looks great on you! I’m not sure that I completely understand the “neck scape” I’ll have to go check out their etsy!

Every time I see your blog, I’m reminded that I need to up my game in the layering department. I like how the neck scape looks on you and with this outfit. I think it adds visual interest, but I can also see how it may be difficult at first to style.

Ooh I’m a fan of the neck scape! Especially in that gorgeous shade of purple.

My first thought upon seeing your outfit was “Yay! Purple!”. Purple is my favorite color, and you wore it beautifully. :)

Love the neck scape (is that like an ethnoscape, technoscape, nod to Appadurai?). Also, love the blog!

I would have never guessed that the skirt was out of your comfort zone. It looks great on you. Is it vintage? Love the tulip shape.
I like the neckscape on you. It looks a little complicated, but I adore the way you paired it with tights.

It looks really fun! I’d wear a less vibrant color because I’m not brave enough to rock both the color and the style together!

The print of that skirt is so cute! That’s neat that trying something a bit outside of your comfort zone worked so well.

I’ve been making jersey scarves like that for years! Finally, I’m hip! It looks great on you, and pulls the whole outfit together.

I was sceptical about those neck scapes, but I get it now, looks really nice! It must have been a purple day yesterday; I too was rocking the purple scarf & tights combo!

I was going to say before I even read your post that I like how the colors in your outfit echo. The neck scape drapes beautifully… almost like waves. I’ll have to check those out!

I like how you wrapped the sweater and belted it to minimize its bulk. It looks more interesting wrapped that way than buttoned. Now I have polka-dot skirt envy; that skirt looks great on you.

Love the outfit! I am so impressed that you Midwest gals wear skirts in the winter. I’m in Texas, and I rarely wear them in what WE call winter!

I love all the different parts of this outfit and how they all look together. Excellent job using these two new pieces!

I like the neckscape a lot and I LOVE that skirt on you!

I have been in love with your wellies since their debut! I wish I could find sophisticated wellies like yours…especially with all this snow lately!

Love that neckscape! What a great look – everything pulls together so nicely.
I, she who is most plain, am wearing a silk scarf around my neck today in honor of scarf month. Many thanks to the three of you for helping me break out of my usual.

Very cute – i’m going to go check that out on Etsy. I love how you are wearing your sweater too – what a great idea to mix it up with an ordinary button-front cardigan! Skirt looks cute too; not sure what you’re worried about wiht that!! :-)

I really like the neck scape – I have checked out a few of those on etsy before but haven’t picked one up yet. The whole outfit looks great – I totally understand you with the short skirt and opaque tights; I’m actually doing the same thing today with a skirt that’s shorter than I’m used to!

If I weren’t on a shopping ban, I would get it! It looks really cool and easy to wear without it getting in the way.
February 10th, 2010 @ 12:49 pm
I love this whole outfit! The neckscape is the perfect pop of color and looks lovely, and you are rocking that mini-skirt. I know it’s a bit outside of what you usually wear, but it looks great on you.

Oh I love that you matched your tights to the NeckScape! I’m glad that you figured it out… the way it looks with your outfit makes it totally worth the effort.
Way to tackle the NeckScape learning curve! :D

oooh the “neck scape” is totally cool… er, warm rather :) i love it, and the matchy matchy-ness looks fabulous… maybe because the textures are so different it doesn’t seem quite so repetitive, ya know? anyway… great ensemble… love the big cardigan belted! and that skirt is perfection!

Love what you did with the sweater and belt!
