  • Black thermal tights – from Romania

Endnotes:

I am wearing possibly the most comfortable outfit ever today. Forget hoodies with jeans – try a hoodie with a jersey dress and thermal tights. I’m kicking off our scarf month with a warm, soft, and library-perfect outfit. I initially reached for this brown wool scarf to echo the chocolate brown of the boots, but after seeing the first round of pictures I took, I decided the brown made the whole look too dark and something brighter and cheerier was needed.

The pink pashmina scarf adds a dash of brightness to a mostly dark neutrals ensemble, while the color of the scarf also mirrors the bits of pink in the leg warmers, creating a nice balance of color at the bottom and at the top of the outfit. To keep the somewhat long pashmina from hanging too low, I looped it around my neck twice before bringing the ends together and tying them loosely.

I tied the scarf underneath my hood, which I find to be more comfortable than tying it on top of the hood, since it keeps the hood nice and snug around my neck and makes for overall less shifting. I applied this same idea here, where I tied a small square silk scarf underneath a shirt collar, or here, where I pushed up the collar of this sweater cape and tied the scarf around it creating a faux turtleneck effect. If nothing else, this technique keeps your shirt collar or hood closer around your neck and makes for a warmer end result.

Are you joining us with this experiment and taking part in scarf month yourself? If so, what’s your favorite way to wear a scarf? S.

The switch to pink was a good call, it definitely brightens the outfit and warms up your face. I’m loving scarf month thus far!

  2. T. says:

I absolutely love everything about this look! The pink scarf really completes the outfit.

  3. Amanda says:

yay for scarf month! I love the pink….great switch. But what I really love are the thermal tights and leg warmers! What makes the tights “thermal”, and what would be the equivalent in the US? I’ve never heard such a term. I love the skirt and tights look but usually it is just way too cold here to wear plain tights….

  4. Chelsea says:

oh the pink scarf is perfect! i love how it ties in the pink stripes on your leg warmers.

you ladies make me want more scarves!

  5. admin says:

Amanda – I don’t know what the equivalent would be in the states, but these are really thick and have something like a fleece lining, so they’re super warm and cozy. My grandparents bought them for me in Romania, but surely something like this can be found in the US.

Anyone come across anything like this in the states?

I’m obsessed with scarves! I usually wear them as E did in the last post, European looped. I find that keeps them secure while at the same time leaving enough length to elongate the line of my outfit (which is one of the main reasons I wear scarves, in addition to warmth).

  7. Julia says:

    I love this!

I’m glad you showed the picture of the outfit with the brown scarf as well. It’s nice to see style bloggers show a “roughdraft” outfit, it really helps to see the train of thought and how they arrived at their final outfit. Thanks!

  8. Melissa says:

I absolutely LOVE this outfit! The pink and brown and boots are perfect. This inspires me to try tights and a jersey dress :)

  9. Sally says:

Scarves two days in a row for me, so I think I’m participating! The pale pink is fab with all those subdued neutrals.

  10. Amanda B. says:

I LOVE how the pink scarf brings out the pink in your leg warmers. I’m print-mixing with my scarf today. My scarf is a blue and white checked pattern, and I’ve got a blue and white striped shirt on. They actually look pretty nifty up against each other.

  11. Amanda B. says:

Oh, and other Amanda- As far as thermal tights go, I’ve never heard that term used in the states, but I know American Apparel has some thick ones that are supposed to be super warm, and personally I just layer 2 or 3 pairs of tights in the winter. It works just as well!

  12. Diana says:

I’m so glad you opted for the pink scarf – it really brightens up the whole outfit!

  13. Kara says:

I have to give you all lots of love. I’ve only been reading a few weeks, but I already find myself feeling much more confident as I put together an outfit. I feel like my style is pretty basic but your descriptions of how you put together an outfit has been so helpful. The last few days I have been able to wear outfits that are much more interesting and thoughtful without even buying anything new! Keep up the great work!

  14. jentine says:

I like the pink scarf, especially since it echoes the hint of pink in your tall socks. And a scarf tied under the hood of a hoodie is the cosiest thing ever!

  15. Laura says:

I also just layer multiple layers of tights (as someone else already mentioned) and I have never heard of thermal tights either. They sound like they would be wonderful though! That’s for sure.

I usually wear my scarves in whichever way keeps me the warmest. I hate the cold!

  16. Genevieve says:

This is not really scarf-related, though your post reminds me I want to go find some silk ones at a thrift store to brighten my spring coat, but I thought you guys might be interested in this post: http://threadbared.blogspot.com/2010/02/genderqueer-oldest-queer-girl-story-in.html. 17. Erika says:

I appreciate seeing both scarves, and I like the cheeriness of the pink.

My mom just told me today that her Smartwool tights are as warm as pants. So they might be worth looking into for those seeking warmer tights.

  18. Luinae says:

Love the pashmina- they’re my favourite kind of scarf.

  19. oneredboot says:

i swear by smartwool tights! they are a bit pricey, but they last forever and are super warm.

that brings me to my question: do you wear a slip under your jersey dress? if not, how do you keep it from grabbing the tights? smartwool tights are a little furry (actually, more wooly), so they tend to stick and require a slip, especially with jersey. but i hate slips: i make my own, but i can never get them to be the right length, and they always get staticky. any thoughts on avoiding that annoying stick-to-the-legs-ness?

    thanks!

  20. Athenista says:

Gosh, this looks SOOOO comfortable! Might have to try this by Thursday at work when I’m dragging my feet. Love that pink scarf – good choice changing it up!

  21. Ana says:

I am impressed by your ability to look super stylish and be super comfortable at once!

You ladies are amazing and I love following you, so I would like to pass on the Best Blog award to you. Details are up on my blog if you are interested in checking them out :o)

Ana – thank you! We’re so honored!

@Erika – yes, smartwool is amazing! A. and I are obsessed with smartwool running socks, they’re thick but incredibly warm and wick moisture so that you don’t get blisters. I am constantly on the lookout for smartwool on cleanrance at REI.com or the REI outlet online.

I’ve never tried their tights, but I’m sure they’re as amazing as the socks, so that’s a great suggestion.

@Oneredboot – I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been on a lookout for a good slip because I do have that cling problem with jersey and regular tights or even just jersey by itself in the summer. The texture of these thicker tights is such that there is no sticking between the two, so I didn’t have to worry about a slip. I’ve never worn a slip, so this is all new territory for me.

Anyone have any tips on purchasing a good slip or where they’ve successfully found one they like? S.

  23. Isa says:

I totally adore this outfit – sure I’ll copy it tomorrow, it’s just the perfect outfit for those horrible days in munich!
And YES YES YES I’m joining the scarf month by brightening up my uninspired black-grey-and-more-black work-outfits with colorfull pashminas, jersey-scarfs and so on…
…and by convincing my boyfriend to wear some scarves of mine, since the boring ones for men just aren’t that “i-Tüpfelchen” for his style :-)

  24. I can’t say I have a favorite because I don’t know that many ways to wear it. I am so learning a lot from you guys this month.
