Academichic Year One: S.’s Top Ten
Posted on | January 14, 2010 | 17 Comments

This week we’re one year of Academichic older and wiser (…well, definitely older, but I’m not so sure about wiser). To celebrate the conclusion of our first year of blogging, we’ve each dug through the archives and put together our own “Top Ten” of the past year. Here are mine.
It’s been fun looking at these pictures as they’re all inextricably linked to memories of people or events and revisiting the outfits means revisiting those moments or persons as well. Outfit No. 3 (navy button down + full skirt and espadrilles) was my favorite of the year and I remember feeling great while wearing it and having the most relaxing day at my favorite coffee shop to be followed by a nice walk through one of my favorite neighborhoods back home in the States. Outfit No. 5 (button down + flower brooches and floral skirt) was worn the weekend before our wedding. I applied for our wedding license that day and the woman at city hall took one look at the abundance of flowers on my shirt and asked if I was going to be in a wedding that evening. I was excited and so happy with anticipation that day. To then be followed by Outfit No. 6: my wedding dress and, of course, the most wonderful day during which I married my best friend.
I could go on and on but will spare you the sappy story behind each look since I did not actually choose these based on the day’s events. It’s more that you can’t separate the day’s events from the garments – the things we wear become inevitably fused with the narratives of our lives. The textiles and the text become interwoven to tell the story of who we are and how we perform our lives or identities. So while some may argue that spending time on your appearance and clothing is shallow, I would suggest that it is an inevitable part of how we understand ourselves and want the world to see us. This is how I performed ‘S’ over the year past and how I will now always see who I was during that particular year and time of my life. S.

@LHDM – Thank you! Wow, I think that’s one of the best ways I’ve heard to describe my style -or of how I’d like my style to be – so I will have to steal that phrase now. I don’t think I could have put it better myself. :)

I love your selections for your top 10, especially numbers 2-4. This blog has been such a great inspiration for me! S., your outfits in particular have inspired me to try new things in my teaching and grad student wardrobe over the past few months. :-)

i love outfit #3 too – so perfectly summery, but effortlessly chic as well.

oh, s, i love the top ten!! 3 and 5 were my especial favorites this year, but i love a lot of the whimsical touches (flower brooches, belts, braids) that brightened up a lot of your looks.

I love #3 and of course the wedding outfit the most, I think. Did you take all the clothes from these pics to Europe or are you missing them majorly right now?

I love the skirt your wearing in #3.

@Jentine – I am majorly missing the skirt from #3 (and #2 – same skirt) right now!! I should have made my Top Ten list while packing! S.

I’m in love with all of these outfits, particurly the one where you have on purple tights. Great style, S!

Hello!
I love your wool shorts and tights look. Another popular trend I have been seeing is the dressier (wool, pin stripe etc.) walking shorts worn the same way with boots. Would you sport that trend?
Thanks

What an amazing year you have had with so many life changes! Absolutely beautiful wedding picture – I love the elegant simplicity of your dress (and your wedding in general.) I also have to add that when I think of your style, one of the first things that comes to my mind is boots because you wear them so well and with so many different things. Your cool-weather style really inspired me to wear my own boots more often and with a greater variety of clothes (mixing casual boots with skirts, etc.)

Outfit number 3 is my favorite too! Thanks for commenting on my blog and responding to the shoutout-I am a little late in returning the favor… but that’s life. Anyway, academichic is now one of my favorite places to stop by- and I love reading through the fashion 101. Working on color mixing at the moment… anyway, my first fashion friday post is up if you’re interested… shameless plug :)
Excited to read through academichic’s 2nd year.

I love the top ten lists! For S, A, and E. =)
However, perhaps you could link the images back to the original posts? I really like the top ten outfits and want to see bigger pictures and just information about each outfit. Thanks!
