Endnotes:
I have long been pining for a pair of tweed shorts to wear over sweater tights with boots. But seeing as how I didn’t pack any shorts with me, I thought I was doomed to sit out this trend until my return to the States. Oh, woe is me!
But then I came across the most amazing thrift store here in Munich and within five minutes of being inside, I spotted the perfect pair of tweed trouser shorts just as I had dreamt about on many a lonely nights. And they were to be mine for only 4 Euros. This was good, but also very very bad. Because now that I have discovered this magical thrift store, I am bound to return many times and my resolve of being frugal is quickly dwindling. Oh, woe is my wallet!
Tweed Shorts, originally uploaded by academichic.Sorry, I think I’m spending too much time buried in my nineteenth century literature and I’m developing a flair for the dramatic. But I really am excited about this shorts-over-tights look and if you need any more style inspiration for this one, just check out how all of these lovely ladies have styled their shorts this season. Today I’m also loving layered necklaces and that it’s Braid Wednesday.

Braid Wednesday, originally uploaded by academichic. While it’s unseasonably warm in the library here and I could probably even pull off the shorts without sweater tights look, it’s decidedly freezing outside. So here’s a note on outerwear: A cute coat is great but will likely loose its charm once you’ve lost feeling in your frozen derriere. A warm and functional coat is a must in my book. I am now wearing this awesome one from Tahari, courtesy of my mom and dad. Thank you! It’s similar in cut to my black wool one but closer in feel to a sleeping bag and something I would recommend to anyone living in a cold weather climate or not commuting by car: invest in a good down coat! They’re not all dowdy and you don’t have to look like a marshmallow, just check out Sal’s great post for ideas and inspiration if you’re in the market for one this winter. S.

This is great! The other times that I have seen this look, the shorts are much shorter and paired with sky high heels (I live in a Big 10 University town … that’s pretty much the norm) and it always looks costumey and cheap. This is so much better! You’ve managed to look pulled together and professional, yet cozy and chic at the same time. I think the boots and the flowing tops are what pull it together well.
Well done!
LOVE this outfit! So adorably cute yet chic!
I do like this look, but I also lack any trouser shorts (since I rarely wear shorts other than to the gym or to run in) and have yet to find any here. Let me ask you, though, I am 98% sure I would not wear this look for teaching, S. Would you?

I love the shorts/tights/boots combo, too. There’s something so satisfyingly casual about it, while not compromising chic-ness. I love this look, and I think Erica is right that the floaty top really pulls it together. Lovely!
Thanks, ladies!
@LHDM – No, I agree with you! I would not wear this to teach in.Something about the length of the shorts, albeit the tights underneath, would make me unlikely to wear this in front of a classroom. S.
Every time you wear that white eyelet tank top I WANT one! And your coat is gorgeous. I love the ruffle detail at the bottom.
You look marvelous, S! I might have to spring for a pair of wintry shorts myself now …
WOW!! I absolutely love this on you!! now you have inspired me to find some cuffed tweed shorts! Thank you SO much for linking to one of my looks! Your boots are really wonderful too!
I’m a bit terrified for the cuffed tweed shorts trend myself, but you look amazing in them! Maybe I’ll have to reconsider…
Okay you totally just made me realize how much I need some tweed shorts. I was playing with the idea in my mind, but thought, would that really be me?! Then I saw this post, and the idea became a solid goal :)
The boots are perfect and I love the dainty blouse. Also, I’m working on growing my mane to be able to participate in braid wednesday to the fullest, and I’m a little overcaffeinated.
ALSO, your dramatic flair is a joy to read :)
Gorgeous outfit! It’s killing me that you’re posting all these incredibly inspiring winter outfits while my hemisphere is in summer! I think at the change of season you should do a ‘Winter’s Greatest Hits’ round-up post to remind me (and other Southern Hemispheroids) of all the looks I want to try,
if those shorts were only 4 euros, your resolve for frugality is clearly right on track. what an awesome find–you look so fabulous here! and cozy warm.
I love this look! Sweet and simple, but not too simple.
I love wearing shorts in winter! I have also been looking for shorts like that for ages, so kudos on the great find!
I love the winter shorts. They’re all over NY.
While I agree that puffy coats need not be dowdy, for some reason, I can not get over wearing a duvet. So I am layering fanatic. I usually have 2 longer button up cardigans (thick knit) that I wear over my regular clothes, under a wool longer coat (about knee length) so I can keep a bit more polish. I did this for 3 winters in the upper midwest, after I swore off Columbia/North Face/Patagonia. Your coat looks great on you.
Love the shorts!! I’ve been looking for a pair myself..Hopefully commenting will transfer some of your tweed-short-at-thrift-store-finding skills to me.
Also, I have that exact same coat and a very similar looking pair of boots, which I wore together yesterday, so the last picture looked oddly familiar to me =]
What a score! I will be in Munich for one day next week, can you tell me the address of that thrift store? Fingers crossed I may find some treasures! Thanks :]
I totally love your take on this! The shorts and boots are so fantastic! Love it! <3
[...] same shorts again! I love these and I have no qualms with wearing something I love two days in a row. This time [...]
Raquel – the store is on Lindwurmstrasse 66. It’s the Poccistrasse exit off the U3 or U6. You get off and then go not even five minutes down Lindwurmstrasse and it’s right there. The name is something with “second hand” in it, but I forgot the full name of it.
I also have found the Oxfam shop in Munich to house some good treasure, although Oxfam is much smaller and pricer than this other store above. Oxfam is on corner of Tuerkenstrasse and Adalbertstrasse and near the university. If you get off at the Universitaet exit with the UBahn, you can walk down Adalbertstrasse for one block to Tuerkenstrasse and it’s right there.
Good luck and have a wonderful day in Munich!! :)

I love this look! The shorts over the tights are great, and I love the mix of neutral colors.
