Endnotes:

Last night I saw one of my favorite operas, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and it was amazing. The performance put on my the Munich Opera was beyond words, it was just soooo good. I’m still in awe.

I wore, of course, my same ol’ go-to: this little black dress and my gray wedges. The following montage shows how the same dress and shoes managed to look pretty different with just a bit of creative restyling using scarves, belts, and jewelry each time I wore it to the opera here. Even if it doesn’t look all that different to you, it felt like a whole new outfit to me each time and that’s the point; I didn’t feel like I was just wearing the same thing every single time I dressed up. I cast my vote for last night’s black and purple look as my favorite thus far. How about you? Which do you think worked best?

I wore my hair in a dutch braid that wraps around into a messy side knot and I accessorized with layered necklaces and a gorgeous purple flower pin from Blue Onion Marketplace. Speaking of which, make sure to check back later today to see if you were one of our three lucky winners who will receive their own Dulken & Derrick flower pin following our weekend giveaway! S.

Hi, I love how you style the same dress differently each day. However I would not always wear the grey wedges with it. While they look great with the first look (pink pashmina etc..) I would prefer black flats with the purple tights.

I’m going to spent 3 months in Davis starting January 2nd and wanted to mention how useful your post on “packing for a research stay abroad” was.

  2. Clare says:

S., these pictures are beautiful. You look absolutely stunning in purple, and I love how you did your hair. I think this one is my favorite, too, although I was a big fan of the orange pashmina look too.

  3. I absolutely love the beads with the flower and your hair like that and that first picture is priceless! I actually really like the grey wedges with this look. I think their contrasting lightness plays with the lighter hues in your flower pin. You’ve put together another glamorous outfit for the opera here!

  4. Debbie says:

I love how you made each outfit look so different! I think my favorite is the black and purple. The beads and flower are really cute.

  5. Sara says:

I love posts like these, where you show an outfit remixed several different ways (though I know it’s easy enough to flip through the old posts, I love them all together on one page). You really demonstrate how versatile one little black dress can be because each of these looks feels very different.

I have a hard time picking a favorite, but I think it might be today’s with the purple details. I LOVE the purple tights with the black dress and grey wedges. I think it’s the perfect look, too for that opera (one I’ve never seen live but really want to).

    Great post!

  6. Sally says:

It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I love how you’ve accessorized it in this most recent incarnation. And ADORE the hairstyle!

  7. EmilyKennedy says:

Well, I do think your most recent styling of the dress is very fabulous, but the red-orange scarf does amazingly beautiful things for your skin. I vote for the red-orange scarf styling.

Also, I love that you re-posted the 4 different styling pics in this post. It really helps me conceptualize the various ways you can work one item.

  8. Alison says:

I am so enjoying seeing you in this dress and how you have styled it. I have the same dress in Magenta and in Brown. I really liked the dress when it first came out and patiently waited for it to go on clearance. I also find it is so versatile.

  9. Elena says:

I’ll vote for this one, too! :) Love the beads/tights combo!

  10. admin says:

Can I play too? S., I love this one with the purple! And your hair looks fantastic, too. – E

  11. definitely my favorite, too! the purple necklace and pin are fabulous!

  12. Julia says:

I love this outfit on you – the whole combination of black, gray, purple. Would never have thought of it!! This is my favorite of the bunch coz its especially playful, whimsical and elegant at the same time. But I love the pink and black combo too with the lovely sash belt. They’re all awesome. Am saving this for my inspiration book. Thanks u!!

  13. AJ says:

All the looks are fantastic! The last one had fun accessories. My favorite is the one with the orange wrap. I just luv the bold rich color of it!

  14. Chelsea says:

I’m kind of a purple junkie lately, so my vote obviously goes for the latest look :) Plus, that braid/bun is just so sweet on you!

  15. Michele says:

    WOW!
    You are such a Hottie!
    :)

  16. Megan says:

I think I like this one best, too, but I’m also partial to the first look. All are pretty and sophisticated!

  17. Carey says:

All adorable, but I think the one with the pale pink accessories is my favorite – LOVE the look of the sash. (I need to try that!)

  18. Holly says:

I like the first two iterations best.

  19. Nadine says:

I like the purple, and also the pink pashmina one.

  20. Sharon says:

This is my favorite of your opera looks by far, but I’m a sucker for purple.
I really like the effect of the necklaces placed next to the flower. It adds a lot of depth and makes quite an interesting focal point.

  21. Dottie says:

I love the Dutch braid! The LBD with different accessories is so fun. I recently bought a black wool mini dress that I’m excited about spicing up – need a trip to the tights store :)

  22. M.E.J says:

I think my favorite for the opera is the red-orange pashmina version, but each one has its own charm. Today’s jewelry is adorable!

  23. Elizabeth says:

Love the pink and love the purple. The pink has a sweet feel, while the purple is edgier.

I never would have thought of pairing those necklaces with the flower, but it works really well!

  24. Rebekah says:

Purple all the way! It looks great with your hair and eyes.

  25. Diana says:

I think this is my favorite little black dress look so far. And I continue to be in awe of your hair.
