There is a discussion going around the interwebs regarding style inspiration and where one finds said inspiration. I would have to say that the majority of my inspiration since discovering blogs and wardrobe_remix on Flickr comes from real people who post pictures of their style. I still look to magazines or catalogues (like J.Crew’s, which can be found online), but the ratio of real people to magazine provided inspiration lies at 10:1 for me now.
For example, today’s outfit started with my wanting to wear this striped shirt over my green button down. I thought of doing this when I saw this picture of Julie from Orchid Grey:

Once I had the striped top on, I remembered a few images of Jen from Jen Loves Kev, which show her sporting a horizontally striped top with little flower brooches (made by her!) as embellishments:

So I added one of the beautiful Dulken & Derrick flower brooches generously sent to us by Blue Onion Marketplace, which took this simple blazer and layers look to a new level.
My hairdo was likewise inspired by fellow blogger and my new hair muse Julie.

(Not all of us can just wash our hair, go to sleep on it wet, and wake up with a perfect do. I’m looking at you, E!) so it’s great to find people who appear to have a similar hair length and texture as mine and to see how they make their locks more exciting. It’s similar to discovering a fashion blogger with your proportions and body shape; you feel like you can easily translate their looks into outfits that will work for you.
This is perhaps why I have found fashion bloggers and wardrobe_remixers to be exciting sources of style inspiration. They offer a much wider selection of aesthetics, size, shape, hair-type, colorings, and budget than the models and looks frequently gracing the pages of women’s magazines.
What about you? Where do you draw your inspiration? Where do your style muses reside? S.

Ach! Your hair is GORGEOUS like that, S! Sometimes I miss my long locks …
Lovin the hair! The braid is cute and functional. I like the contrast of textures between the braid and your waves.
First off, let me say that I love, love, love your hair!
A lot of my style inspiration comes from magazines and catalogs, but I’d say my style this season has been really influenced by Mad Men in terms of cuts and silhouettes and Project Runway in terms of colors and layering. I also have become increasingly inspired by fashion bloggers, like you ladies, the Glamorous Grad Student, Irie Chic, and Kasmira of What I Wore Today, just to name a few. I am so inspired by seeing women of all sizes, shapes, and colors wearing stylish and beautiful clothing in creative ways to express themselves.
love the hair–and the idea of layering a button-up under a striped tee!
My style inspiration also comes from other bloggers. To be honest, it tends to come from you three lovely ladies of Academichic. (Like a lot!) I’ve also incorporated ideas from Tiffany of I am Style-ish, Chelsea of Bright Side Dweller and A. of The Glamorous Grad Student. Its rare that I would be inspired by anything other than bloggers since I don’t really have the time to leaf through catalogs or magazines and my tv watching choices don’t center around fashion. Some of my fellow law school ladies dress really well and I tend to borrow looks or ideas from them too. Occasionally though, I’ll just look in my closet and decide I want to wear a particular piece and see where that leads me.
Your hair looks fantastic like that! I might try that ‘do myself as I have long locks as well. I draw a lot of inspiration from reading blogs and looking at people’s flickr photos. I also thrift for fun A LOT and am always looking for new ways to wear my fun finds.
Thanks for the love! your outfit looks great!
You guys have DEFINITELY inspired my style in the month or so since I found this blog – and my bank account is thanking you for it! I’ve rediscovered my love of thrifting and now my wardrobe is stuffed with adorable-yet-smart skirts, something I’ve never really tried before.
I rarely take my style inspiration from any one source – I usually stick to preppy with a boho flourish, and if I see things that jive with my look then I’ll get them, but I rarely buy something just because it happens to be ‘in’.
Definitely love the hair. I get inspired by all kinds of things, blogs, magazines, movies, occasionally tv– but rarely anything I see on the street where I actually live. I think style blogs are the most inspiring right now because it allows you to take things that you see on very high fashion-y sites like The Sartorialist and see looks filter down to regular people.
Thanks for finally talking about how you style your hair S.! I think you and I have similar hair (long, wavy/curly, and dark?) so I’m excited to see what you do with it. Are those reddish highlights I see natural?
My style has always been vintage inspired, from old movies and magazines. I have always liked late 50s/60s style and the Italian 60s fashion in Fellini films. I have to admit, I sometimes get annoyed when vintage styles I’ve rocked for years become trendy! Thanks to Mad Men and the new movie Nine, I should probably get used to it though haha. I suppose it means I can find clothes in my favorite styles easier I guess :)
Thank you for posting about me. It really is an honor. You guys are awesome!! Keep up all the great work. You are an inspiration to a lot of people!!!
I totally heart your style S!!! And LOVE today’s hairdo. I’ve got similar hair texture and length as yours and I HATE blowdrying it, so was thinking of cutting it off, but I love your hairstyles from yesterday and today so much, I’ve just gotta try them and keep the locks. I’ve started thrifting, layering and using more colore since I became a follower of academichic, so you guys are styling a lot of people!
I would agree with you, my major source of inspiration is from other people’s blogs and styles. I have found some really cool ways of wearing items I have always had by looking at others. Of course, academicchic is one of my favorites! I love the way you all always find different ways to wear the same things! U are all so chic and worthy of being looked up to!

Love you guys–I’ve been wearing more “opposite” colors together as a result, since my natural inclination is to choose more muted combinations.
Have to say, S, you look particularly fabulous in that outfit. Europe seems to agree with you! And I *love* the hair–I immediately noticed it and was pleased to see that you blogged about your inspiration as well.
I definitely get more inspiration from real people, bloggers online or people I see walking around town. It feels easier to duplicate a cute style when its on a real person, and not a stick thin, super tall amazing model on a runway or in a magazine. Feeling like Im in something that other people see as stylish certainly helps me feel more confident. Even if what I’m wearing is outside the comfort zone of those around me I still feel great. Oh, and your hair looks great!
I want longer hair!
I completely agree with getting inspiration from real people, it is SO much easier to translate to your own wardrobe.
I like bloggers who have something in common with me, eg same type of hair, same fondness for dresses, same love of colour. But I really love fashion mags for the amazing photography . .
This whole look is … get ready for the most overused but fitting expression… eurochic.
I definately look to magazines for inspiration but I get frustrated when they baby us and tell us that ‘fur and sequins’ are in for the holiday season… yes, thank-you, sparkles are in every holiday season. I find that fashion bloggers are more fun though, the response to fashion is quicker and it’s more representative of real women and how they approach clothing.
I love your use of the flower in this outfit!
I used to look mainly to magazines and catalogs, and I still look through them occasionally, but since I discovered fashion blogs in the last year, I’ve been viewing those far more than anything else style-related.
You look fantastic, and I love your hair! It makes me miss wearing mine long instead of short.
Isn’t Julie awesome?! I love your interpretation and the hair suits you well! Such a sleek look!
YOU!
We’re about the same height, about the same build, and though I’m paler than you (so colors work a little differently), we’ve got the same hair color and texture (though mine is currently SHORT). So when I see you rock an outfit that I previously thought wouldn’t work on MY body, I decide to test it out for myself!
Also, E for systematically showing me ways to distract from a very obvious torso. For different reasons, sure (she thinks hers it never-ending versus mine is disproportionately well-endowed), but flared skirts and bold patterns and bright colors and ACCESSORIES divert attention beautifully no matter what you’re diverting attention from.
Actually, my outfit today is a hybrid of all of you. A: I’m wearing neutrals (dark gray, taupe, cream) and layers with a GREEN accessory. E: flared jersey skirt, tucked in shirt, funky textured detail on the shirt. S: floral! ribbon belt! boots and funky tights! And where I got everything? TJ Maxx (boots and tights), Target (undershirt), Charlotte Russe clearance rack (shirt), Thrifted (skirt from Antropologie! with tags still on it! for $15!), and antique store (necklace, gift from my mama). And my watch, which was a graduation gift, but I tend to forget I’m even wearing it.
So yep. You ladies inspire me. As do Anthropolgie catalogs, and my college room mates who combined city style (G), San Francisco style (J), artsy/girly (K), and punk/tomboy (A). And some of my gal pals who MAKE lots of their clothes. I love walking into D’s living room and seeing outfits pinned up on a sewing mannequin. It reminds me that I never have to settle for anything that doesn’t fit me perfectly.
