Yesterday’s outfit turned out to be a pretty perfect NaNoWriMo one, although my main thought when putting it together was that I hadn’t worn blue and brown together in a while and that needed remedying. Blue and brown is a wonderful color combination and seems to work in any season, don’t you think?

Brown and Blues, originally uploaded by academichic.

After mixing some blues with a good dose of brown, throwing a bit of gray in for good measure, and finishing with a pop of red in the earrings, I was set to start writing for the day.

We all know that boots and a scarf are a perfect cold-day remedy, but I’m now adding a jersey dress to that list as well. I think my perfect writing uniform for a cool fall day (if we’re taking pajamas off the list here) would include a comfortable pair of boots, a cozy pashmina scarf, and a soft pajama-ish textured jersey dress. Thus equipped, I was able to hit my day’s word count and spare time for some pesky dissertation work. Thanks, outfit!

And on a related note, I’ve recently come across this wonderful post by writer Natalie Whipple on Tips for First Drafting. If you’re NaNoing along, you might also find it useful. I find her entire blog, Between Fact and Fiction, to be extremely charming and full of lovely advice and insights into the craft of writing. So if writing’s your thing, be sure to check it out! S.

I seldom think of blue and brown together – this post is a great reminder! And I love the cheerful geometric pattern on that dress, S.

  2. Smart Style says:

Jersey dresses fly in the face of my grandmother’s persistent claim that “you must suffer to be beautiful.” Feels like pajamas? Looks chic and put together? Is it too good to be true?
I love brown and blue together, too (I actually wore a brown and blue belted combo yesterday!).

I love your outfit today – as usual – and I wanted to wish you luck with NaNoWriMo. I’m not participating this year, and am glad to live vicariously through those who are. :)

  4. Julia says:

such a pretty outfit! Just perfect!

  5. Chelsea says:

I love this layered look, S! I’m going to aim to put together a blue/brown outfit soon… great inspiration :)

  6. Patricia says:

I like your outfit, but I also wanted to say thanks for the writing tips – my 15-year old son is doing NaNoWriMo so I’ve passed them on to him!

  7. ShopKim says:

I’m a huge fan of blue and brown together and you certainly did a great job with it here! You all are inspiring to do something with my pashmina soon. It’s not a fun color, just black, but I’m going to give it a try. Totally loving your’s and A’s wide braid belts too.

Are those Frye Campus boots? I think I have the same boots, but mine are dark green. Also bought at Dillard’s on sale for $65!! Yesterday was not a productive NaNoWriMo day for me– maybe I need to try wearing a jersey dress today to see if it helps.

    Thanks, everyone!

Patricia – how awesome that your 15 year old son is doing NaNoWriMo!! I would have never had the drive to take something like that on at his age, I’m so impressed! Go him!

Sasha – these are my Frye imitation boots ;) I didn’t buy them to look like Frye boots, since I didn’t even know of Frye boots then, I just really liked the look of them. Since then I’ve gotten your question a lot, but I checked the almost worn off label inside and they’re a different (almost illegible now) brand. I love them and I think a dark green pair sounds divine!

I love the brown and blue together! They play off each other so well, and I love the touch of red in your earrings. I find little pops of color like that go such a long way with the whole feeling of the outfit. Love this one!

I’m so glad to hear that you easily achieved your daily word count quota! That’s awesome! I can’t wait to hear more about your novel. Do you find that working on it has helped in inspiration when returning to work on your dissertation?

And thank you for the links – I will have to check them out!

I LOVE this outfit! Blue gives brown a nice pop. I’ve been reading academichic for about a month, and I’m curious: What is your definition of “remixed?” I see it a lot from all three of you, and I don’t know what it means! Thanks! :)

  12. jentine says:

    Blue + brown= fantastic
I’m actually way too curious about what your novel is about…

  13. Nadine says:

Love the different shades of blues and browns combined with the bold print.

  14. MusingAround says:

Urgh, I’m proposal-ing right now and I don’t even want to think about being in the thick of dissertating. Baby steps.
I really like this outfit b/c I have a love/hate relationship with print. I’m always attracted to it on the rack, but when I try it on I feel overwhelmed. But this- with the cardigan, belt, and boots- this, I can do.

  15. GeekGirl says:

I love this dress and its pattern, and the blue on top is amazing!

  16. Unnati says:

I love this outfit! Nice color combination!

  17. Snidder says:

Just wanted to thank you, again, for inspiring me to NaNoWriMo for the first time, and for inspiring me to flout the conventions of academia and wear stylish outfits.

I’m behind in my word count but not by much and I’m catching up so there is hope that I’ll actually finish.

  18. Beth says:

Love the color combination and you are exactly right about a jersey dress, tights and a scarf being the perfect combo to get you going on crisp fall days!
