All remixed:
- Black dress – Target
- Black belt – Banana Republic
- Silver clutch – Charlotte Russe, thrifted
- Black tights – Grocery store
- Gray wedges – Report “Calico”, via Solestruck.com
- Ripple shawl – Blue Onion Marketplace
- Earrings – side walk sale, my wedding earrings
Endnotes:
So it doesn’t quite have the same ring as Superbowl Sunday or Ice Cream Sundae, but it does describe what I did yesterday and it is as exciting to me as football and ice cream might be to others.
We’re officially off! National Novel Writing Month began yesterday and if you’re participating then you’re likely sharing my nervousness and excitement as you begin your novel. Thank you to the lovely Andrea for putting a little NaNo support group together and encouraging everyone to share their first paragraph on her post. I’d also love to hear from any of you who are partaking in this – I invite you to NaNoWriMo obsess away in the comments section of this post! (And if you want to add me to your writing buddies, my NaNoWriMo name is Academic Abandon.)
Wedding Earrings, originally uploaded by academichic. As for my outfit yesterday, I did not wear this to write but I did wear this to the Opera after my required word count was met. One of the things I love about being in Germany is being able to get 6 Euro tickets to attend the Opera! No joke, attending the Opera here can be cheaper than going out for two beers and by far more chic!
I told you I’d likely keep wearing this same black dress over and over, and so I did. This time around I went for a more dramatic effect with black tights, a black velvet belt, and a POP of color (that’s how loud it was) with this red-orange ripple scarf from Blue Onion Marketplace. Sorry about the poor image quality, but I snapped this just on my way out and the lighting in my room is horrible. So you can just pretend to be seeing this outfit with this background and then you get the idea. How else would you style this LBD other than with a pashmina scarf and a belt? S.

have you ever thought about vintage look with needle-lace (crochet) colar?
something like:
http://www.theuniformproject.com/home/daily/Doiley-bandit.html?month=October
or
may be not needle-lace, but colar from fabric + string of pearls et.c.

sorry, forgot to add link to second suggestion:

or
just jewelry, broachs, pins, medallions, beads et.c.

Bebene – thanks, great ideas! I should be checking in with the Uniform Project more often for inspiration for my own LBD! Thanks for the reminder! S.

I love that gorgeous, vibrant shawl with your dress! Such a lovely, elegant look. I’m heading to the opera tonight (my mother is in town and it’s our [always belated] tradition for my birthday) and I’ll be wearing something very similar. There’s something so easy and chic about a black dress!
I love your first paragraph! How has day two been? I found myself charging ahead yesterday but today it was a big more difficult to get into it again. I can’t stand it when that happens!

That’s a great shawl, and I like your up-do a lot too. Simple but totally makes it seem more formal. I like babene’s lace collar idea. Or even just a really colorful big beaded necklace.
I signed up for NaNoWriMo at the last minute, and only managed to get 1055 words written by the time I sat down to it last night. So I’m behind already! Oh well.

I really LOVE that dress on you – I think it’s the neckline – very pretty.
Good luck with your writing!

Thanks, Carey!
Sara and Sasha – let’s hope that Day Three of NaNo (on Tuesday) is a good one and that we can make some progress. While I was off like a track star on Sunday, I also felt a little more sluggish today on Day Two, so I’m hoping for a good come back tomorrow.

I just found out about NaNo last night and I love the idea. I am just not sure I can handle it right now while trying to study for the GREs. I have loved your blog since I have been reading it. It is so great for an aspiring academic that wants to remain stylish!

I’m doing NaBloPoMo….the blog version. Sorry, i don’t have time for the novel – need to get my prospectus written! But i am with you in spirit and will gladly cheer you all on!

Youlook lovely going to the opera! You really are making use of the perfect little black dress.
I dressed my 2 dogs up for halloween too! I am going to post pictures of them later tonight, so check it out!

you could wear it as a skirt by putting a blouse over it, or layer another shirt under it! if you want to casualify it down a little. i have a slightly formal black dress like that one that i wore to class as a pencil skirt with a plaid button down, tights, boots, and a scarf.

So beautiful! I am in love with that scarf.

I’m jealous you made it to the opera! I was still trying to meet my daily goal last night after a late start. I’m adding you as a buddy on NaNoWriMo (I’m ktwamba). Good luck!

Its amazing how many ways you can wear a black dress just by playing around with the accessories. You look great! Not so sure about the shoes… they remind me of crocs.. which is kind of casual i think. From the ankle up, u look perfect :)
