End Notes:

For whatever reason, this morning I felt like wearing this new pair of blueish-greyish-purplish tights. And then, once I had them on, inspiration sort of left. I wasn’t completely sure what colors to pair with them, and I felt like I should be heading off to ballet class.

So, I decided to run with the ballet class notion and riff a little off of Degas’s Blue Dancers from 1890 with an analogous color scheme of blues and purples and a full skirt. I’m an art history grad student, after all.

If this outfit looks familiar…well, it should. It is essentially the “mom uniform” I blogged about a month ago. But wouldn’t you agree that the addition of tights and the tight blue-purple color combination give it an entirely different feel than the more punchy red wedges I wore back then? I think this little comparison suggests a fruitful avenue for a future academichic workshop on how tights can change an outfit, particularly during transitional weather. What do you say?

This is a lovely outfit, E. I really like the colors, and the silhouette is so dancer-esque. Perfect “mom uniform”!

  2. Trisha says:

I say . . . you’re so right about tights! Looking forward to the workshop.

  3. the spanish lady says:

you look great! I am learning a lot with academichic!!

  4. Chelsea says:

I agree! The feel is definitely different, though essentially the same. Combination deemed a success in my book. (I love how you’ve drawn inspiration from a piece of art! I’m tucking this idea away for the future.)

  5. Shannon says:

Love the outfit!! And the last photo is a nice tribute to Degas as well =]

  6. Luinae says:

Those tights are a really lovely colour.

  7. Nadine says:

Amazing photos! I’m a ballet teacher, so I always feel a bit self-conscious about dressing in a ballet-inspired way when I’m not at work, but this is a great, subtle, beautiful look. (I LOVE purple and brown together. One of my all-time favourite colour combos.)

Can I show you the same dress with two different pairs of tights?

Changing the tights led to a flow-on effect with all my other components of each outfit.

  8. Lucy says:

Lovely ensemble! I second the idea of a tights workshop. I feel like I had haphazard luck with them, though I couldn’t live without them in the cold months.

  9. Melissa says:

As a Canadian, we’ve been having tights and heavy jacket weather for almost a month now, and I’m going through the seasonal discovery that I need at least four more pairs to replace the ones that have gone missing since last winter or have snags/etc. I’d love a workshop on tights!

  10. Sal says:

I’d love a workshop on the transformative properties of tights.

  11. kristin h. says:

I would also love a workshop about tights. As a native Texan, I never had a need for tights, even in the winter (I just wore pants). But now as a transplanted New Englander, tights have become a necessity to extend my wardrobe…but I’m perplexed with how to wear anything but black tights. Help! :)

  12. Kathy says:

Like Kristin, I have problems with anything but black tights! And even they can look so heavy and grounding when the rest of the outfit is snuggly and cheery. I’d love to see a workshop!

  13. Rose says:

I would love a tights workshop!

  14. [...] them hang loose around my shoulders.  Perhaps we should try a scarf workshop to accompany the tights workshop suggested by E.  What do you [...]
