This year for my birthday, my parents and little sister came to visit and my mom took me shopping!

My mom has a  great sense of style and knows me and my style better than anyone.   She loves shopping for her five daughters and over the years her favorites places to shop for us have become J Crew and Anthropologie.  AS, she puts it, these are the places she can buy something unique or special for birthday and Christmas gifts.  She usually let’s me buy my own staples.

At J Crew, she picked a few things out for me to try on, including this top and cardigan combo.  I adored the cardigan right away but was a bit skeptical of the top.  The top looked great on all the catalogue models and the flowers were just as beautiful in the store,  but I wasn’t convinced I could pull it off.  When paired with the slouchy menswear inspired cardigan, as suggested by my mom, the look was perfect.

Would you trust your mom to pick out clothes for you?

This visit, I also introduced my mom to the BR outlet, so she did buy a few staples as well,  including this great denim pencil skirt, which I am sure you will see me wearing again an again.  It was cold yesterday — a prefect day to pull out my sweater tights, but still warm enough that I could wear them with a skirt and flats.

When it comes to pattern, stripes and plaids are where I am at home.  Florals and polka-dots are S.’s territory.  I think I find most florals are just a little to girly or to soft for me to feel comfortable in,  but I am leaning to love the mix of stripes and flowers – the slouchy collegiate with the polished frill. S. refers to this as mixing registers, something often done in the J Crew catalogues.

Are you a florals or stripes person?  Or, do you rock the mix?

My style is different from my mom’s. She used to have great style in her heyday, but she’s gotten a bit dowdy in recent years. One day, maybe I can get her interested in fashion again. We’ll see.

I’m neither a stripes nor floral person. I did buy a handful of floral pieces this past spring, but they were everywhere! I prefer to stick to solids or color-blocking.

  2. Meli says:

love your outfit! The tee and cardigan are beautiful- I wish I had them! :)

  3. mariel says:

Although my mom looks great and puts together outfits that always surprise her fellow teachers at the elementary school, my style differs from hers greatly. I would say that she picks out things I like about 25% of the time. Haha. Still love shopping with her though!

  4. Elena says:

Love the outfit, especially the floral top :) I wish JCrew’s embellished tees were cheaper…may have to take my mom on a trip there…

I’m just not much of a fan of having people buy me clothes because I feel like fit varies so much from store to store, item to item. Every now and then my sister does it for me, though, and succeeds!

  5. Abbi says:

Surprisingly, I would trust my dad to buy clothes for me rather than my mom. I usually pick out clothes for Mom or make her borrow things from my wardrobe, but Dad usually has a good (albeit eccentric) fashion sense.

  6. Tiferet says:

Absolutely not. The only person in my family who has ever successfully bought me clothing is my stepmother.

My mother doesn’t buy me clothes any more but when she did, they were always for the person she wished I would be, not the person I was, and usually they were the size she wished I would be as well. So I’d be a size 14 and I’ve always been a romantic dresser who favours pastels, jewel tones and black, and she’d buy me some ghastly navy blue and burgundy tailored thing in size 8.

  7. Clare says:

Isn’t shopping with mom so great? I love the mix of girly and masculine in this outfit!

  8. Kelly says:

Trust my mom to pick out clothes for me? No. We have completely different ideas of style. But if she wants to pick up the tab, that’s fine with me!

  9. Trish says:

Lovely outfit. It looks so comfy. I don’t think I’d trust my mom to pick an outfit for me. Though, when I was younger she used to pick out all my clothes and I would love them – well 99% of the time.

  10. Sal says:

The embellished top is just lovely, lady, and I’m sure you’ll find many ways to work it into ensembles!

  11. Rachel says:

My mother has good fashion instincts, but I never let her pick out clothes for me. Our personal styles and body types are so divergent that we jokingly pick out clothing for one another when we go shopping that the other would NEVER wear.

  12. piglet says:

My Mum can always pick out things I love. And she is better at picking books for me than I am for myself!

I really love that slouchy cardigan and the tights!

  13. Alisha says:

What a great fall look! It looks so cozy, especially the tights. I’m envious that you’re getting to wear fall stuff right now…it still feels like summer here in Austin, TX.

  14. T says:

I will trust my mom’s opinion on whether or not clothes I have chosen flatter me, but I wouldn’t have her pick anything out for me. She has always been cute and stylish, but I have my own taste.

Now, my own daughter…I’m in for it with her. She is 9. Dressing female children is tricky. So many things are too tight or too flashy. Fortunately my daughter prefers a modest cut and style, so we haven’t butted heads over that yet, but she and I definitely have vastly different opinions on patterns and colors. I have to step back and not push my own taste on her. I do acknowledge that even though she picks a color or print I would never ever choose for her myself, she always looks cute in what she picks out.

  15. Luinae says:

    Lovin the slouchy cardigan!

  16. Kathleen says:

Happy Birthday! I am the mom who also takes my daughter to Anthropologie and J. Crew for a treat ;) I love their clothes too, and occasionally pick up something on sale to spice up my basics, but almost everything in the store looks great on her and I can’t resist. Good thing she is in school 1800 miles away!

  17. That garland top is great!

My mom’s style for me is a hit and miss

Some items, I LOVE TO DEATH.. but some other items she picks out, are totally “WTF?” moments for me.

Just the other day, she had gone to Spain and picked up this long gypsy skirt for me to wear.. which .. is totally far far.. FAR off my style (simple, clean, chic).

Still.. she came back with some awesome pieces nonetheless.

  18. ShopKim says:

Never in a million years would I let my mother pick out my clothes!!

  19. Maggie says:

While my mom’s style is pretty different from my own, she is usually quite good at finding things for my taste.

(On another note, I have been searching for a professional and affordable denim pencil skirt, and your new beautiful skirt sent me straight out to the closest outlets here to find one!)
