When we posted advice about what to wear to a winter wedding last weed, we certainly were not thinking winter wedding season would be so soon be upon us.  It was cold and gloomy last night in Academichic Central, perfect weather for a movie night at home, but I had an elegant evening wedding to attend!

Based on the formal language of the multi-layered invitations I deduced that this would be a rather chic event.  I have been to a few black-tie optional weddings and have always worn the same black halter dress from  Banana Republic, changing out the accessories and shoes.  I love the dress and I usually love how it looks on me, so I didn’t even bother trying it on, but for some reason, last night I just wasn’t happy in it.  A2 tried to convince me to wear it, but I wasn’t leaving the house in something that didn’t make me feel good.

Packing Update!, originally uploaded by academichic.

Suddenly I had very little time to throw together a formal look for a gloomy night.  I dug through my closet but everything was either too casual or too summery.  I settled on this jersey dress because the color, the unique neckline, and detailing at the waist  all making it a little more evening appropriate.   Yet, it was still jersey dress.  I decided it was nothing that a great shoe and a little sparkle couldn’t fix!

I think you look very appropriately dressed for a wedding- love the little touch of sparkle!

  2. What a great outfit!
I know what you mean about wearing the same black dress over and over to semi-formal events. Sometimes you just need to mix things up. Once I revamped a black strapless bridesmaid dress with a wide patent leather belt. I am always a fan of dramatic red lipstick for evening wear, too.

I love everything minus the shoes. They’re gorgeous, but they are still normal leather pump. IMO it would have worked better if they were satin or patent. Still, the color choice was great and you looked gorgeous.

Great fix for the dress! Love the result.

I think it works well and yes, I am always hunting around on the last minute. With me it is usually due to the fact that I may have put on a little weight and the clothes don’t sit right.

I love the dress. You look fab. I also think the placement of the brooch.I saw a similar style when watching Lipstick Jungle on Nico Riley. Definitely have to try it out.

  7. Classic & beautiful, you looks great :)

I always struggle to put together a look for a “dress up” evening, especially in cooler weather. I hate buying a “special occasion” dress, especially for something like a work holiday party, and would love more suggestions on how to amp up something already in my wardrobe… I have a feeling I’ll be wearing my LBD again unless inspiration strikes!

Beautiful, and the brooch looks like it is supposed to be part of the dress! I love the dteal shoes.

I’ve rarely had any true formal evening occasions when a semi-formal dress wouldn’t do, so if I ever do have a fancy holiday party or something similar, I’d definitely be scrounging around because I don’t have a current need to keep a fancy dress in my closet.
