Happy Back-to-School Day if you’re in Europe! The new school year has officially begun in Germany (and here in Romania) and in most of Europe, if I’m not mistaken. Although I’m no longer attending classes, I still felt some of that initial new-semester excitement and thought it only too fitting that my outfit, rather unintentionally, looked somewhat school-girlish today.
Browsing through the J.Crew fall catalogues for inspiration this morning, I noticed that it’s all about layers! And not just layers, but also about mixing patterns and putting together paradoxical pairings of structured and slouchy, fitted and loose.
J Crew inspiration, originally uploaded by academichic. One example being the ultra-casual sweatshirt underneath a fitted, professional blazer. I love this contradictory combo and it’s nothing I’ve not worn before (but in my case, it was out of sloppy-ness not intentional style intuition). Today I thought I’d intentionally wear these seemingly at odds items together and the result is comfortable yet still collegiate chic.

This might be my favorite outfit yet!
The sweatshirt under blazer look is actually one of my favorites, and was a major staple during grad school. I love that scarf, too!
I love this outfit! I was just thinking about what to wear today, as I have both to attend a class (where I’ll be a student for the first time in years) and look presentable for meeting a German official. The jacket over hoodie idea is genius for my split day. Thanks for the inspiration!
I am originally from Brasov, by the way, and your pics are making me quite a bit nostalgic. As do your grandparents’ grapes. Yum!
P.S. I think you do the look better than JCrew. I really like your addition of the soft scarf and bag instead of the costume jewelry, which JCrew tends to overdo, in my opinion.
Thank you, ladies!

Wow, NEVER would have thought of this combo/idea and I LOVE it!!! Have got to try it now. Love your outfit and how you adapted it from the picture. You’re always full of great ideas! THank you.
Some of the preppier J.Crew looks don’t send me, but I ADORE your take on these layers, S!
ADORE this look!
I love this outfit! Jcrew is such a great inspiration. I love the layered look but fear it adds weight. I guess it’s just a matter of having things that fit right and having room for those layers underneath a jacket.
I love wearing a hoodie under a jacket. I don’t know why, but I always feel it’s a look I’m borrowing from the boys.
That blazer is fantastic. I really like the scarf as well. It adds an extra bit of interest to the outfit!
I love that scarf, and the whole slouchy with structured look.
Your 2 dresses outfit of the other day inspired a look I featured on my blog: http://thislittlepiggie.tumblr.com/post/201573033/pig-in-a-blanket-when-inspiration-strikes

What kind of fabric is the blazer? I have one blazer-style jacket that I wear all the time, but I am sick of it and I want a different one. I see a lot of “suit” type blazers in thrift stores, but I’m never sure if the fabric would look silly with a jeans-type combo or not.
What do you think?
