Today, I am continuing my experimentation with scarves and layered necklines to rejuvenate my summer wardrobe.  I wore this scarf as obi/belt this past winter and loved it and I think it works well here with the purple and grey and the little bit of a textured cami layered under the ruched v-neck.

Detail, originally uploaded by academichic.
I got dressed, snapped some pictures, and headed off to a morning meeting before getting a chance to check in with the blog.  I have to say, I was amused, but not surprised to see that E. and I were both wearing our matching purple cardigans today.

The three of us own several of the same items, E and I in particular have some of the exact same pieces in the same color, many of which we actually purchased while shopping together.   Many a mornings I have received a quick email or text message alerting me that E. is wearing one of said items and I have more than a few times called E. while getting ready for an evening event to be sure we are not wearing the same dress.

But, this purple cardigan has become too much of a go-to item for both of us to even bother with.  While this may be the first time we have both worn and blogged this cardigan on the same day, just last week when she wore hers with jeans, I was wearing mine with a brown skirt, but never got a chance to post it.

I mentioned this shopping trend of ours a month or so ago when E. and I were wearing the same cardigan in different colors. I explained then that owning the same items as these two lovelies has never bothered me and I know it doesn’t bother S. or E. since they have both, at one time or another, encouraged me or each other to purchase the same item as them.

Would you mind terribly if you showed up to class or work in the same sweater as a fashionable colleague?   A.

Gorgeous! Love the scarf as a belt. And I love how you and E have worn the same cardi but worn in such different, unique ways and both look fab.
There was a time I’d never buy or wear something someone I knew wore or had, but that was in high school. I was really petty back then. But now I’ve matured and love swapping clothes with friends, a great way to expand our wardrobe!

Love the outfit. Lots of interesting visual at the neckline without being too flashy. And I see no problem in owning the same item as others. I mean obviously it means we share the same sense of style plus I get to see another way to wear the item. But certain times it could be not so fun haha

  3. Meli says:

I would never notice since they are styled so differently- unless you were side-by-side!

  4. Sal says:

How funny. Thought it makes sense that three women who share a blog would have taste so aligned!

  5. Sharon says:

I love the layering! Now that spring is about to start over here I should try something like that.

  6. Anna says:

I wouldn’t have noticed you two were wearing the same sweater if you hadn’t pointed it out, or unless I saw you standing side by side. Not only is the styling completely different, but I think the purple shade looks a bit different on each of you b/c you have different coloring. And besides, when your ensembles look as awesome as both of yours the individual pieces are just details :)

  7. Annie says:

I think your individual style makes the same sweater look so different it’s hard to tell they’re the same piece. If a colleague of mine wore the same thing on the same day, it wouldn’t bother me a bit. I could hardly ask someone not to purchase or wear a mass-produced item just because I happen to have it too! If we wore the same dress to the same function, that might prove a little funny but I’d be more inclined to laugh it off than get upset about it. I take it as a compliment if someone asks me about something I’m wearing and happily reveal the source. It always bothers me when someone acts too proprietary about a favorite thrift store or clothing item. Best kept secrets about stuff like that are meant to be shared. That’s what I love about the fashion/style blog community. Information sharing is what it’s all about!

First, I love how this belt and layered shirt look with the dress. Second, one of my best friends and co-workers have several of the same pieces in our wardrobes too, and I never mind when we end up both wearing them.

  9. Luinae says:

It does kind of bother me when people where the same clothes as me- but I wear my clothes very differently from lots of other people so I’m better then I used to be.

  10. Nadine says:

I think wearing the same garment would be a fun bonding moment.

  11. Kathryn says:

I have come to work accidentally wearing the same thing as a coworker. It was amazing how differently we each styled the item and how it looked on our very different bodies (one of us being tall and lithe, the other being pretty short and curvy). It didn’t bother us, but it had other people doing double takes all day.

  12. Sabrina says:

It would be funny if you were wearing the same thing as a student. I came to class one day and realized a student and I were wearing almost the same outfit. We all had a laugh.

  13. Lucy says:

Great food for thought. I grew up owning many of the same garments as my younger sister, although they were often in a different color. Later, we would even intentionally buy the same items to stress our bond, and now that we live many thousands of miles apart and don’t get to shop together much anymore, we “shop” each other’s closets whenever we visit. But I wonder how I would feel if someone else, with whom I do not share the same deep bond, would show up wearing the same things I do. I have a hunch I would feel a little competitive, even if it were a friendly sort of competition. Does that happen to you? As for wearing the same thing as one of my students, as Sabrina suggests, I would probably laugh it off, but I would make a mental re-evaluation of the item: is it too “young” for me? could/should I style it differently?

  14. Diana says:

I love the layering in this outfit – I’ll have to try wearing a scarf as an obi sometime.

  15. WendyB says:

Great color! I’d want to wear that all the time too!
