A week or so ago, one of my favorite wardrobe remixers, mamichan, wore this outfit, reminding me of one of my all-time favorite color mixes: gray and yellow. Or, as mamichan termed it, “grellow.”
I love grellow, and mamichan’s photo prompted me to pair my gray bermudas with an unexpected yellow shoe. It’s a combination that conjures up industry and nature, asphalt and sunshine, all at once. Looking through photos for this blog, I actually haven’t worn it as much as I thought I had, which means I may be indulging myself in the near future. Watch out.

And while I love wearing yellow close to my face (having finally overcome my junior high misgivings), I realize that it’s not a color for every complexion. But you need not deny yourself the joy of grellow! As this outfit and mamichan’s prove, a shot of yellow as an accessory or as part of a skirt is just as easy a way to incorporate this combination into your wardrobe. I myself am hankering after a yellow skirt, or belt, or bag for this coming fall.
(And, to answer questions from my previous post, no, I didn’t dye my hair. The blue-blackness in the photo was a convergence of post-thunderstorm lighting, the green-blue of my top, and a different location for my photo. I can’t say that I’m not intrigued, though…)

Awesome shirt!
I’m a huge grellow fan, too … thanks for the reminder to put this combo into the mix more often!
Beautiful blouse! I’ve got to find a way to rock some “grellow” sometime soon.
love this outfit, too cute!
awww, you are so sweet. I LOVE those shoes. I should also admit that I didn’t come up with grellow on my own, another remixer said it so I’ve co-opted it.
I love the combination of grey, yellow, and white so much. It looks calm and sophisticated, but edgy at the same time. I just moved, and guess what the color palette for decorating my new bedroom was?
Still, like you, E., I haven’t been wearing this color combo nearly enough — time to change that. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love grey and yellow (and absolutely need to combine them more often). Nice outfit!
I can’t wear yellow- so sad I cannot wear “grellow”
love that top! and the chopped shorts look great.
So cute.
I have an unrelated question- what percentage of items of specifically ‘maternity’ clothing do you think you ended up buying? I’m newly pregnant and wondering how many maternity things I’ll really need to end up buying. I loved your maternity style – it’s given me lots of ideas and helps me look at ‘maternity’ in a fresh perspective.
Love the combo, and I love the details of that white blouse!!
I love this polished, yet casual look. The charcoal bermudas are so classy no matter what the remix!
Hi, just found your blog :)
I love this outfit. It’s both casual and chic. There was a pair of yellow flats that I was lusting after a few months ago but ending up not getting because they cost about $300… maybe I should check to see if they’re on sale yet.
Hope you have a great rest of your weekend!
Thank you all!
@Carey – Congratulations! The majority of my true “maternity” purchases were bottoms: a denim skirt and a more professional gray skirt, a great pair of trousers, two pairs of jeans, a pair of jeans-come-bermudas, and a pair of pinstriped bermudas. I also had a couple of jersey skirts a size larger than usual that I wore quite frequently. In terms of tops, my bump ended up not really fitting many maternity tops anyway, so I did bit of shopping at Forever21 where the “long” look was in and the stretchy fabric gave me room to grow. Honestly, the amount of “maternity” clothes you’ll need to buy depends on lot on how well your current wardrobe converts to preggers-friendly attire and how your individual body adapts to pregnancy (will you pop early or late, carry high or low, etc.). Good luck, and I’d love to answer any other questions you have as your pregnancy progresses!

That top is a great find!
Thanks for the feedback! F21 is DEFINITELY on my list of stores to visit after seeing all your cute tops from there that worked so well as maternity. I’ve got a short waist, so I’m hopeful I can get away with not having to get as many maternity tops – but I have a feeling finding maternity pants for long legs will be my biggest hurdle.
