Today’s ensemble is a bit of a summer-fall mashup. I am not much of one for following fashion rules, but I did think to myself earlier this week that I should get another wear out of my white skirt before Labor Day. The weather is still quite warm here, but like S., I am ready for my favorite season – Fall! I pulled out this burnt orange top and by the time I was done accessorizing I had a rather autumnal palette going. I think the contrast of the rust and white with accents of brown was the perfect color combination for a sunny September day.
As I mentioned earlier this week, I rummaged through my jewelry box and rediscovered a few pieces I haven’t worn in ages. This beaded bracelet is one of those finds and I love the colors and style of it. I paired it with the beautiful bangle S.’s mom gave me on S.’s wedding day.
Bracelets, originally uploaded by academichic. We have been doing a bit of talking about accessories around here, specifically brooches. I actually have a variety of brooches coming my way, so will be attempting to “brooch the subject” very soon, however I think I will find this much easier to do once I am wearing scarfs, jackets, and sweaters on a regular basis. Another accessory I have trouble with is the small square scarf. I love big long scarfs that I can wrap around my neck a couple times or wear draped around my shoulders. Recently I have come to also like long thin scarves that I can use as belts. But with a scarf to small to fit around my waist, I am at a loss. S. does wonderful things with these little scarves, but I am just not a neck-scarf person. So, when I received this beautiful little sunflower scarf from Vintage Threadz, it took some thinking to figure out how to incorporate it.
Sunflower Scarf, originally uploaded by academichic. With sunflowers being an August to September bloomer, the scarf was such a perfect accessory for my summer-fall mashup, so I tied it around the straps of my bag. I used a similar trick with my large flower brooch, adding it to a large tote and a small clutch.
I’ll be passing this scarf on to S. soon to see what she can do with it, but I’m curious how you might style a small square scarf? A.

Cute outfit! Seems different from your ‘usual’ – way to mix it up! Tied to the bag is a good trick – you could also wrap it around your wrist like a cuff, and sometimes I’ll fold it over on itself and tie it around my neck.

Small squares can be tough. I usually roll mine into a snake, and tie in a knot off to the side of my neck, Audrey-style.

I really like this outfit! I tend to shy away from bright tops with white bottoms, but seeing how well it works on you, I might give it a try.
Also: this might be a stupid question, but I’m not entirely sure what it means when an item is “remixed.” Help!

Such a cute outfit! I discovered this blog last week and could not stop reading.
I have the same problem with smaller scarves: I don’t like to wear them around my neck. I usually do what you’ve done here, tie it to a bag handle. Otherwise, I use it as a headband or to tie back a ponytail (as long as the ponytail isn’t too high, this looks stylish).

you’ve inspired me to go through my jewelry box as well. any reason to use the phrase “brooch the subject” is a good enough one for me. :)

Woman, you are on fire lately! Another gorgeous ensemble.
I don’t know if the droopy belt-end troubles you at all; I like to clip mine into place with a bobby pin.

Thanks Nadine! I usually use the bobby pin trick too, but for some reason I was kind of digging the droopy end yesterday. A.

I’ve been reading for a while and thought I would delurk and say thanks for an awesomely inspirational blog! I taught my first class of the semester yesterday and I was definitely thinking of you all as I accessorized a neutral outfit with a bright green-blue necklace I hadn’t previously thought of pairing with it. Yay! I felt extra confident, which helped because I’m still new to teaching.
Small square scarf: Well for me, because I have short wavy hair, I’d fold it up diagonally and tie it around my head like a headband.

I love that sunflower scarf. I really like this outfit – the color combo is beautiful.

Pretty! I like the red/white contrast and that scarf is gorgeous.

I like that idea! I recently got a free square floral scarf that is too small to wear or tie around my neck, and I’m thinking that using it as a handbag accessory is about the only thing I could do with it. I like how you made yours really contribute to the overall outfit instead of looking like a random add-on.
VintageThreadz has a wonderful selection! Thanks for the recommendation.
