I’m easing into our week of Monochrome and Split Complementaries with a simple gray and black outfit. I don’t wear monochromatic neutrals a whole lot, but when I do, I’m always struck with how elegant and sophisticated this kind of color simplicity looks. Monikulus, one of my favorite wardrobe_remixers, is the queen of grays and blacks and gorgeous monochromatic ensembles – just check out her Flickr set here if you’re ever in need of inspiration.

For my one pop of color, you may have noticed Nerp’s new bright pink basket. My other basket broke last week, so I was due for an upgrade. I’ve been inspired by the wonderful Julie Mack, another wardrobe_remix favorite, to go for a colorful milk crate after seeing how cute her bright red one is. As if Nerp wasn’t metrosexual enough, now he’s also sporting a pretty pink basket … but he likes it. He’s now the brightest and prettiest of all the bikes amid the bike rack crowd on campus. S.

I know what you mean – I try to avoid monochromatic neutrals, too, but when I don them I always feel so sophisticated. You (and Nerp) look smashing, as always.

Lovely! I love the great necklace and bracelet you have…the monochromatic ensemble makes a great backdrop for them to stand out!

    Lovely outfit, as always!

Your monochrome week has made me feel I can ask for advice……..I work in a professional occupation, and as such, suits are required everyday for work. Regrettably too, being a young female in this job I feel I have to wear slightly more sombre outfits to be sure I am taken seriously and not dismissed as an airhead due to my age and sex. So whilst I love and admire the outfits on your blog, I often feel I am living vicariously through you all in terms of colour and the lovely whimsical touches, such as the flowers or more adventurous jewelry. However the longer I read your blog the more I am tempted to go for the bright red shirt with a black suit, or subtly introduce colour with red necklace in an all black outfit. Baby steps, I know, but still steps forward…

Anyway, after seeing that this week is monochromes (and thus closely related to what I feel I have to wear each day) and remembering the time A and E had to dress up to meet with someone on campus who may have not been taking them seriously, I was wondering – can you do a week of more professional attire? I know it’s out of the purview of your “Academic fashion” but surely there are times in academic life when it is important to dress in this way – job/grant interviews, presentation of thesis, first day of teaching…… – that can lend themselves to this theme? I would love to see your take on it all, and hopefully take some ideas with me into my dressing each day.

    Thanks!
    Julia

You’re rocking the pendant…I can never wear those without looking like a strange lounge singer!
