This week we’re reviewing Triads and Analogous Colors. Before we began these color challenges, I had never even heard of a triad (I’m no Art Historian like A. and E.) and would have been hard-pressed to tell you which colors form a triangle on the color wheel. But since constructing our color wheel of clothing I can not only point to a triad but I’ve also come to have a favorite triad: purple, green, and orange.
I know I’m cheating just a bit today by using a turquoise top to count for the green but I’ve been really dying to wear this pretty lace-embellished top again. I’ve worn this particular triad ‘straight out of the crayon box’ here, and near-triads like today’s outfit here and here. It does seem like it’s easier to create near-triads, where one color is just a darker or lighter hue than its undiluted version. Or with a color that’s slightly to the left or right of the actual triadic one, like today’s blue-green of my top. It seems to mitigate or soften the otherwise very bold color mix. But even so, I’ll be anything but a wall flower wearing this bright and punchy color combo today! S.

That is one of my favorite shades of blue-green – it looks gorgeous on you! I love how you combined it with the purple and the pops of orange in your accessories. It really makes me long for more color in my closet. Stunning!
Cheat away, doll – that near-triad is fantastic.
The skinnies look really good on you. Not a look I see you often wearing but very flattering!
These colors are really gorgeous on you, and I love the super-flattering cut of the cuffed skinnies!!
I really love this combination, and it’s lovely on you. I love purple and green together, but am never confident enough to throw orange in the mix. I might have to borrow your trick of using turquoise and see if it makes it a little easier!
Triads seem to be really working- even the near ones
I love your blog ladies! Great inspiration for stylish outfits. I do have a question, though and please forgive my ignorance. It seems you can wear colors together that are far away (triads) or close together (analagous) – so can you just wear anything with anything? As long as you avoid Christmas and Halloween combinations? A friend of mine says many combinations work as long as you wear it with confidence!
Thank you, ladies, for your nice comments! I have to say that it’s much easier coming up with triadic combos this time around than the first – I think it takes a bit of practice.
@Anjali – you’ve very rightly observed that we try our hand at all kinds of color combos! We agree with your friend that pretty much any combo goes, just have fun and wear it with confidence! We don’t really believe that any colors “clash”, we just think that different combos have different effects – soft vs. bold, muted vs. loud, etc etc. So it all goes, just decide what kind of result you’re looking for.
