4 August 2009 – Just Married!

Just Married!, originally uploaded by academichic.
After much planning and arranging for a big wedding to take place next year after my return from Germany, T. and I decided to cancel the whole thing and do what we really wanted to do – have a small outdoor ceremony with family and a few friends to tie the knot in a much simpler and more intimate fashion. So we eloped! Over the course of the last two weeks, we planned an elopement of sorts (I guess it’s not an elopement in the true sense of the word, since we did have our parents and a few friends there) and got married yesterday! Yes, on a Tuesday.

S. and A., originally uploaded by academichic.
Sources:
On S:
  • Champagne Dress – BCBG
  • Earrings – sidewalk sale a few days before wedding
  • Bouquet – made my S. and A.
On A:
  • Navy Dress – J.Crew
  • Pearl Necklace – gift from parents
  • Fuschia Pumps – Seychelles, via DSW
  • Bouquet – made by S. and A.
On T (below):
  • Navy Suit – Calvin Klein
  • Gray Shirt – Geoffrey Beene
  • Purple Tie – Perry Ellis
  • Shoes – Florscheim
  • Boutonniere – made by S. and A.

Endnotes:

A. acted as my ‘person’ and did a most amazing job helping me get ready; making bouquets and boutonnieres with me, helping me style my hair, preparing brunch for everyone at our house, and endless more jobs that had to be done even for a tiny wedding. And they say eloping is the easy way out!

Unfortunately, E. and N. couldn’t make it due to a recent tiny arrival of theirs that made a 6+ hour car ride rather unfathomable. So they were with us in spirit, as were several other good friends who could not make it due to the spontaneous nature of our event.  But A. and A2 were on board, as were our parents and T’s brother, and so marry we would!

Our wedding colors were fuschia and purple (inspired by the beautiful fuschia plant that grew abundantly in my grandmother’s garden when I was little). T. looked dashing in a navy suit with a deep purple tie over his pale gray dress shirt. His brother R., acting as Best Man, wore a similar gray dress shirt and likewise sported a purple patterned tie to invoke our wedding colors.

A. wore a gorgeous navy J.Crew dress, which she accented with fuschia pumps and a purple clutch. The fuschia and purple bouquet brought the whole look seamlessly together.

I wore a long champagne colored gown with a fuschia colored flower pinned in my hair (found for less than a $1 at a local crafts supplies store). My bouquet was made of pinks and purples and tied with fuschia and purple ribbon. As luck would have it, I spotted a delicate pair of pearl and crystal flower-shaped earrings just a few days before the wedding as I was perusing a local sidewalk sale.  They went so well with the crystal beading of the gown’s neckline and with my general appreciation of floral anything that I just had to have them. For a mere $13, they completed my look.

I absolutely loved my dress and look forward to reporting more on how I found it and how I  eschewed the outrages price tags of conventional wedding boutiques when planning my outfit and wedding day accoutrements in general. To further cut costs, A. and I decided that we would learn how to make the bouquets and boutonnieres ourselves. Given that we only had to make our two bouquets and six boutonnieres for the groom, parents, and best man, we decided that it was a task worth tackling. And I couldn’t have been happier with the results. Since it worked so well for us, we decided to share our DIY with you and will be posting a How-To very soon!

It was a wonderful day and I couldn’t be happier!  Everyone involved was so helpful and enthusiastic and we had a blast. All in all, not bad for a Tuesday wedding. Now I can relax, stop worrying about planning a wedding, and simply enjoy the rest of my life with T…

Ooooh congrats! It looks like such a beautiful, simple, cosy way to get married. There’s an element of showmanship to some of the very large weddings which I can’t imagine is very fun for the bride and groom. Your way is definitely how I would choose to go.

I’ve always fancied semi-eloping and after seeing your post I’m convinced it’s how I should get married (when I eventually find a husband lol). I love your quirky colour scheme too, you academichic girls are totally the bees’ knees!

  89. Sabrina says:

I will throw my hat in the ring of the many well-wishers! And I mirror sentiments that you guys truly inspire me, as a young professor in a long term, unconventional, committed, and monetarily challenged relationship. Yeay for you (all) as being such exemplars- stylish, fashionable, gracious, and pursuing that work-life balance that often eludes academic women.

  90. M.E.J says:

Congratulations and the best wishes to both of you! It was so unexpected! It seems you got all the readers typing. You look lovely, and the same goes to A.
It was a brave and good decision you made, I just wish I could do the same thing, but the fiance and I have the same problem: really close extendend kinship. I just know there’s a big wedding in my future, but every time I see someone “eloping”, I can’t help asking myself “what if?”
Anyway, congratulations again, enjoy as much as you can.

A fellow urban bike commuter ;-)
