Endnotes:
Today I’m doing a rare color combination for me and one that I should definitely put together more often: browns, black, and navy. Together they create a dark, sophisticated, and rich color palette – really making me wonder why I don’t mix them more often! (I only wore black, navy, and brown together once before and it was for the Fashion 101 module on neutrals the first time around).
Some of you noted, that you believe a black and brown pairing to look more convincing and intentional when the two neutrals come to meet side by side. So today I tried to do just that; I layered a black cami under my brown top, hoping to show that black and brown were meant to come together in this look. By extension, it should look like no accident that my black shoes were added to a brown belt and brown purse.
Although these darker neutrals may appear to be more fall or winter appropriate, I think they translate well to a summer outfit too. It gives this skirt and top combo somewhat of a professional ‘I mean business’ look. It actually made me feel like I should be going to teach a class in this outfit. But since I won’t be teaching for a couple of semesters, I just had to file this away mentally in my “to teach in” category.
This makes me think that I should file away outfits like this in our Teaching Outfits category on this site. I may not actually be going off to teach today, but I would consider this a perfect inspiration outfit to those of you looking for ideas on what to wear when teaching and for myself when returning to my teaching days. So expect teaching appropriate outfits to be tossed that way even if they were not actually taught in that day. I hope you don’t object to the minor technicality! S.

I think this combination of neutrals came together nicely, and it would definitely be a great outfit for teaching.
Love the tie-neck on your brown top. And I’m still amazed how riled people get over pairing black and brown!
What strikes me about this combination (which I think is beautiful, by the way) is how well the two browns in the top and belt come together. I don’t have any problem mixing brown and black or black and navy, and brown and navy combinations have been a staple of my wardrobe since high school, but I find mixing different browns a bit of a challenge. Perhaps you chics would be interested in saying more about that?
I love mixing these colors together. And it usually looks good….when you do it right! I love the otufit you put together here. It is a mix of preppy and classy!!
I really like this look! In the past, I’ve been afraid to mix black & brown, brown & gray, but after seeing it done so well by the chics, I’ve gradually started wearing these combos. Black & navy worn together has always been one of my pet peeves, but it doesn’t look too bad on others.
I really like this. It looks great. The whole outfit is just snappy and rich, like you said. Kudos!
I ADORE that top! This whole look is very rich and expensive looking.
I love the little details in this outfit: the pleats on the skirt, the tie in the shirt, the lace of the cami. All those little pieces come together to make this already-lovely outfit even more interesting!
Love the outfit! This look works well with your long leg line. A shorter leg line could not pull this off. You lucky fish!
[...] of brown and grey but have been of the mind that it is more of a fall and winter palette. S.’s lovely use of navy, brown, black has made me reconsider. I chose a white tee-shirt and turquoise beads to lighten up the look a [...]
