As you can see from the above sources list, 90% of today’s outfit comes courtesy of mom. My mom has an incredible eye for style and I end up being the lucky recipient of many of her wonderful hand-me-downs, like this gorgeous flower buckle belt and these boho espadrilles.

She often picks things out that I would never pick for myself but that quickly manage to become favorite items in my closet. I don’t even list all the times an item is a gift or inherited piece from her because it’s a bit embarrassing that a woman my age owes over half her wardrobe to her mother. Her gift of style has sadly been lost to the world since she toils her days away working as a chemist…but alas, I get to benefit from it even if the public at large does not. Up until recently, I was sole beneficiary of this arrangement (I’m an only child), but in recent years, my fiance has been promoted to co-receiver of stylish garments as well. Hmph!

I’m looking forward to flying home tomorrow to spend a week with my parents and to raid my mom’s closet. Other things I look forward to while at home: brunches and dinners out on the patio, nice wine, home-cooked Romanian meals, two fat cats, and running on the lovely woodsy trail nearby.

What do you look forward to when visiting your childhood home? S.

  2. Audi says:

Oh, I love this look! Way to go, Mom!

  3. Sal says:

My mom and I have COMPLETELY different styles and COMPLETELY different body types … but we swap clothes and accessories all the time. Your mom really does have quite an eye, S! Those are some choice hand-me-downs.

  4. Diana says:

I love, love, love that belt! My childhood home is only ten minutes away, so I see my parents a lot. My favorite part of going home is getting to see my two kitties :)

  5. S@sha says:

    All cute– especially the belt!

    What is typical Romanian food?

  6. ShopKim says:

This is a really great outfit! Love the shoes and the belt.

No childhood home for me to visit. We moved out of it when I was 16.

  7. Kathleen says:

Those espadrilles are adorable! I also miss home-cooked meals, as it is not easy to find Filipino food in New England.

  8. sarah von says:

That skirt is fantastic! I didn’t know Talbots did ‘adorable.’ :D

  9. Erika says:

Hi, S. What a striking belt and charming shoes! I really like them together too.

When I go home, I like to spend time in my parents’ garden where my husband and I were married. Enjoy your own visit home!

  10. Kelly says:

Ooooo love the skirt and the espadrilles. Really, the whole outfit!

I live next door to my parents, and we both live just a 30-60 second drive from the house where I grew up – my brothers live there together now. Since it’s a bachelor pad we don’t really all congregate there much, and I actually do miss it (even though it’s so close) because it’s in a valley, snuggled up in the middle of a forest. It’s gorgeous. I’m in the middle of the forest too, but I’m more smack-dab in the middle of it. I don’t actually have a lawn or as much “breathing space” around my house – that’s what I miss.

  11. Kathy says:

Definitely food! Mom used to make all our clothes. It’s less common now, but we still do sometimes make requests and create a “Mom sweatshop” as she calls it.

  12. piglet says:

I love that skirt. I would have been tempted to tuck the shirt in, but I like the way you belted it over the skirt.

haha, I look forward to the food too, nobody cooks things quite like your own mother huh?!

  13. Em says:

I moved up the coast from where I grew up – but on the drive back, I love going down the main street where they have multiple large scale oak-wood BBQ’s going every weekend. The town is known throughout the area for their BBQs and the smells bring back good memories.
    I love to raid mom’s jewlery box & her 60′s-70′s era clothing…

  14. Sarah L says:

Great outfit! I love getting hand me downs – I just got a couple great skirts from my mom’s sister.

I’m at my childhood home right now, and I love the history nerdiness my whole family has inherited. I may be the only one going to history grad school, but everyone in my house loves to watch period movies and documentaries. I also love having a fully-stocked fridge!

  15. Nadine says:

Wow, that is a sensational outfit!

My parents are travelling around now, but when I go to my in-laws (my huz is my high-school boyfriend) I love SLEEPING, and not having to cook or worry about my kids.

  16. angie says:

So sweet! Your Mum has great style, just like you :0)

  17. Cindee says:

love this entire look! and that belt is adorable.

  18. admin says:

Well, it seems like the reoccurring theme here is: Food. Thanks for sharing all your nice childhood home stories, it was great to get to read them!

And thanks for all your nice words about yesterday’s look!

This outfit is impeccable! I love every single bit of it! Your mom must be a very stylish lady indeed.

  21. Jane says:

This outfit is wonderful from head to toe–you clearly inherited your mother’s sense of style. The belt buckle is especially adorable.

I’m going “home” this weekend and am looking forward to visiting some killer thrift shops and enjoying green spaces (I live in the desert).

  22. I. says:

    Shoes galery!

  23. Kathleen says:

Catching up on your posts while gone all of July, including visits to my childhood home where I enjoy…. the fragrant ocean air and cool breezes, walking along the nearby cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, my mom’s yard full of roses, jasmine, lemon and orange trees, the implacable sense of order, my parent’s classy 50′s/60′s home that has never gone out of style….
