Endnotes:
I’ve been noticing this trend on the internets lately and decided to try it out for myself today; wearing a longer skirt as a dress. You might remember this turquoise number as my maxi skirt, which I don’t wear very often. But having discovered this trick, I think this item will get a lot more use from now on.
I first saw the lovely Clodo from wardrobe_remix doing this with a bright floral skirt and then I was going through the archives of the Uniform Project and noticed that Sheena did a similar thing with a plaid maxi skirt underneath her black “uniform” dress. So what do you think about this skirt to dress conversion? Have I tempted you to run to your closet and try it yourself? If so, feel free to snap a picture of your creative self in your skirt-to-dress look and send it our way, I’d love to see how you make this trend work for you! S.

I love that trick! Probably because I don’t really like long skirts (on me)
I didn’t even realise it was a skirt until I read on, looks great!
That is absolutely one of my favorite “tricks”! I own only one maxi skirt so I have yet to try that, but I often turn those jersey skirts with the fold-over waistbands into “dresses.” I can’t believe how versatile they become!
Turquoise and red is one of my all-time favorite color combinations, Miss S! It looks stunning on you!
hey, I love what you did with the skirt! This dress looks perfect!to tell you the truth, although i always enjoy the most your outfits, I was not so excited when I saw the photo of you wearing the skirt! But as a dress it has a whole different approach and i relly like it!well done!
I love how the waist-tie on the skirt becomes a cute accent when it’s worn as a dress!
I have been tempted, but am not sure any of my maxis would work … I’ll have to experiment this weekend! Love this look on you. And you really are the mistress of amazing color combos.
Thanks everyone for your encouraging words!
Penny, I think it’s funny that you like this more as a dress than as the skirt it’s intended to be! I guess sometimes it’s good to question the mode of intention and experiment with other ways. Thanks!
Sal, I was a little scared of this color mix, to be honest. I wore A LOT of color yesterday but something about the bright day outside and my cheery mood made me feel like it was a go. Glad you liked it! :)
I’ve worn skirts as dress but I find I’m a bit top heavy for strapless dress without a cardigan.
Anyone else find that the skirts blow up when worn as dresses?
Ha–I tried this in the privacy of my bedroom and found out right quick that it doesn’t work with a chest over a certain size!
I have a long skirt that I ONLY wear as a dress, because I just don’t like the way it looks the other way. Here are a couple outfits I’ve made with it:

Like Midorigreen, I find that it blows up easily when I wear it as a dress, so I always make sure to wear shorts or something underneath.
@Audi – that blue skirt of yours worn as a dress looks great! I think I’ll have to try that layering look and wear this with a sweater over it in the colder months!
@Linda and Midorigreen – I kinda thought that if I were larger in the chest area it might have messed with the evenness of the hemline more. This trick might be limited to a medium to smaller chest size…

Personally, I think this skirt looks better worn as a dress. I love all the colors in this outfit!
[...] Posted on July 9, 2009 by Chiada I’ve noticed quite a few people lately converting their maxi skirts into tube top dresses. While this is a cute idea, I decided to do the opposite and convert my tube dress into a maxi [...]
I love tricks like this that make items more versatile. I just bought 3 skirts that I’m so excited to wear as dresses. I posted them as dresses on my blog, but I forgot to take a picture of them as skirts first. oops!
One of the many reasons I love this blog is because the 3 of you have so many good tricks to share! Extending necklaces, using brooches for pendants, skirts as dresses. The list can go on and on. Thank you (all 3 of you!) for not hogging all the great fashion tricks for yourselves! :)
