Today was out first day on the road. I took the advice of our many readers who commented that I should wear a scarf “Old Hollywood” style as a way to protect my hair in the convertible. Since many of you mentioned names like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, I did a quick search before leaving to get a visual aid of how this scarf style should look. And indeed, this way of wearing a head scarf has been coined the “Grace Kelly” and looks like so:

And success! This way of covering my hair has proven more successful than my previous methods (head band, baseball cap, floppy hat, bun) and I am happy to report that five hours of open road later, I still have hair to show! I used two bobby pins to keep the scarf in place, slathered on plenty of sunscreen, and enjoyed the breeze.

And with style icons like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn having sported such looks, who am I to doubt? I packed a couple more scarves in different colors and patterns and will continue to perfect this look as the week goes on. I also thought I might give the “Low Bun Wrap” a try – what do you think? Perfect! You look so cute and classic with the head scarf.

One of my long-haired friends has a convertible and very kindly brought along an extra head scarf for me when we drove around with the top down. Even though my hair is short, I definitely appreciated being able to keep it under wraps.

Hope you had fun cruising around!

The scarf looks great! I always want to wear head scarves, but I feel self conscious. I also have slavic features and the scarf needs very careful styling or else I think it looks like a babushka– never the look I’m going for! Last fall Facehunter had a picture from Warsaw with a girl who had totally modernized the babushka–and I loved it! Not good for windy situations, but you could give it a try for sun protection. (Not sure how it would look without the cool leather jacket though).

Someday I will manage to do the Audrey look from Breakfast at Tiffany’s in the trench, scarf, and big sunglasses – I’m looking for a way to make sure that it doesn’t look like I’m just copying though!

You look adorable and I’m jealous of all the fun of a convertible. I’ve always had the same hair problems and now I think I may have a solution, so thanks!

  7. Clare says:

Hmmm, I wonder how “the kelly” would look with short hair…

  8. Marie says:

That scarf looks so classic and stylish. Thanks for posting the graphic on how to do it… I may actually have a chance at doing it correctly now! Love the look- and I say low buns can be stylish and sexy too- give it a try.

  9. [...] color mix was actually a long standing color contender for my wedding colors). As with the last scarf-on-the-road outfit, I wanted to incorporate the scarf right into the outfit so that I could wear it around my neck [...]

So, I wanted to take a road trip when I saw that awesome car again… and now I see that there’s also a fun scarf trick involved? I am green with envy! You look so so so cool and chic and road trip ready! I hope you have a fun and safe journey!

This is just what I was looking for. I’m going to a vintage car show on Saturday in an old MG B. This is THE look! xx
