All remixed.

End Notes:

Today is a day of showers. This morning I attended a bridal shower for a friend and this evening my husband and I are going to our first baby shower. I wasn’t terribly impressed with myself for this morning’s outfit, but I am fairly pleased with tonight’s get-up. Let’s look at that instead.

End Notes, Part II:

I refashioned this dress with the very self-conscious purpose of making myself feel striking and beautiful. Maybe even sexy. I feel like I’ve gotten the “cute preggers lady” look down to a science at this point, and I’m a wee bit tired of it. Being cute is great and all — and I’d far rather be cute and pregnant than “bloated” or “whalelike” — but there’s only so long that a lady can exist with “cute” being the go-to adjective of choice.

I don’t think that this dress is cute.

I love how vibrant this color is, I love the deep v-neck and the drape of the sleeves, I love the height and the curve of the wedges. It’s a bold look for me and I am making myself own it. Yes, I am the 6 foot tall pregnant woman in bright flame orange. I’ll post a little later about how I refashioned a floor length halter maxi dress into this drapey number, but tonight I’m just trying to remind myself that I can simultaneously be pregnant and many other adjectives besides cute.

Is it just the nerd in me that has me dressing with particular adjectives in mind? Does anyone else do that? How do the words that people use to describe you or your outfits affect your self-perception…or do they? Have you ever gotten tired of a complimentary adjective and dressed to directly counter it? I’m curious!

That red dress is absolutely gorgeous on you!

  2. Sarah says:

You are one hot mama in that dress! I can’t wait to learn how you created it.

  3. Beth says:

I get tired of people pointing out how tall I am. Do you get that, too? I was once a 6 foot tall (actually a little more) pregnant woman…but towards the end I *did* look bloated and whale-like. Hope you avoid that!

  4. meredith says:

honey. . .you are pregnant and that is EVERY REASON to celebrate your femininity and sexuality. bearing a child is something to be proud of and you look stunning while doing so.

congratulations on your future “fashionista” or “fashionisto”.

  5. Kari says:

I’d add “radiant.” That color of red is amazing on you.

  6. Meg says:

At 15 weeks pregnant my goal until now has been to simply look “not fat.” You’ve challenged me to set the bar a bit higher – to look beyond cute and set my sights on “sophisticated,” “pretty,” and as Kari just mentioned, “radiant.” Happy Mother’s Day!

  7. Kimberly says:

Holy hot mama!!! You are rockin’ that red dress.

  8. Brooke says:

I’d say you swapped “cute” for “smokin’”. Great job, and happy mother’s day!

  9. angie says:

That’s the way to refashion a maxi dress! Brilliant. You look BEAUTIFUL.

  10. Diana says:

Well I think both outfits look fantastic, but the second one definitely gives new meaning to the term “hot mama” :)

  11. [...] One of the things I treasure about my summers is that I suddenly have the time to do little crafty projects that are impossible when the semester is in full swing. I have a fairly extensive list of refashioning projects that I’d like to complete before the baby arrives and I was excited to get started by creating a dress to wear to my first baby shower. [...]

  12. admin says:

Aw, thank you everyone! I am in love with this dress and want more special occasions to wear it to!

@Meg – Congratulations! I love knowing that I have a preggers reader. I definitely know the feeling of just trying to look “not fat,” but I’m confident that you will be able to far surpass that!

  13. [...] looked radiant in her bright orange dress. I think that is exactly how I described her the first time she wore this dress, which she has now refashioned twice. I enlisted E.s refashioning skills for my own custom party [...]
