End Notes:

I’m about to head off to another art exhibition opening tonight, and my challenge was to be FAAAAAHBULOUS, per Sal’s awesome post on, well, fabulousness. I do not currently own maternity “shiny,” which made the assignment a little more difficult. Astute readers will immediately notice that I am wearing a whole heck of a lot of black and cry out, “Wait, Sal said that black is ANTI-fabulous!” Good catch. But, I am going to justify myself on three counts.

First, we’re having weather issues over here which ruled out the brighter dress combo I was hoping to wear.

Second, have you looked at these sleeves?

Third, when I first received this from my mother-in-law I was a little frightened by it. It’s a lot of drapey and a lot of sleeve, and I just wasn’t sure that I could pull it off without looking like a monk or a Renaissance fair lady.

Therefore, I submit that, indeed, this is a fabulous outfit if only because of the sheer amount of temerity required for me to put this on and say, “Hello, I am a pregnant woman in very big sleeves and I am making it WORK.” Also, my shoes are awesome.

Are you being fabulous this weekend?

    you DO look Fab!

I have a rather newbie question…when you guys say “remixed” what exactly do you mean?

    Have a wonderful weekend!
    Amy

Mighty fab indeed! I’m gonna have to do some MAJOR closet scouring to find my fabbest (sp? word?) outfit pieces!

  3. C says:

That cut of jeans is just fantastic on you! LOVE it!!

  4. Kathleen says:

You are rocking that top, big sleeves and all. The outfit is totally fab. And the shoes are super cute!

  5. Lauren says:

You look great! I love the flowy sleeves and agree that they are fabulous.

I’ve frequently thought the same thing as Amy — what is “remixed”? If you wear jeans with Top1 and Top2, is it really “remixed”? To me, that seems like just wearing a wardrobe basic with more than one top.

I would consider “remixed” wearing something a different way rather than just wearing it again — for instance, a scarf worn in the hair vs. on the neck vs. as a belt, or a dress worn as a dress vs. backwards with a cardigan vs. as a skirt.

  6. Dawn says:

You most certainly look fabulous. The sleeves, the pop of turquoise, the shoes and the jewellery all make it fabulous. I love all your poses for your photos. :-)

I’ve been following this blog for a while, and love it, especially since I am also a PhD student who’s trying to up my style quotient. I was moved to comment because I too have been puzzled about the term “remix” in relation to clothing. Is it just wearing something again, wearing something again in a new combination (with different separates, accessories, what have you?), wearing something again in a new combination to produce an entirely new look? Enlighten me, oh chic academics!

Thanks, everyone, for the affirmations of fabulous!

Amy, Lauren, and titlayo – Folks use “remixed” in a variety of ways in the community that birthed the term, wardrobe_remix over on Flickr. And Lauren, you’re right that the strictest interpretation would be wearing something in a completely new way to produce a new look and that, often, jeans don’t fit that definition.

I’ve been more loose with my interpretation here to include wardrobe pieces that I’ve worn and photographed previously, even if it is just a pair of jeans. While this might not be the most exciting use of “remixed” I’ve found it to be practical in several ways. First, it helps ME keep track of my wardrobe and to see what my core items are in practice, not just in theory. Second, it reiterates the fact to you, wonderful readers, that I have a limited — and at this time in my life, very limited! — closet.

Now this comment is getting really long, and I think you might have inspired a whole new post on the topic! But I’m curious. Would you all prefer if we stuck with a more limited definition of “remix”? Do you have suggestions for another term that could be more broadly applied to signal that, yep, it’s the same ol’ pair of jeans? I’d be interested to know!
