Another thing that A. and I have in common — and another feature we both love to play up! — is our height. At 5’9″ I tower over my Japanese mom and all of my childhood friends from Hawaii. But as I’ve grown more and more comfortable with my height I’ve also learned how I can dress my body to emphasize it. In fact, I’ve realized that I frequently “steal” the tips style magazines or guides give to petite women! Give me a vertical stripe and I am a happy lady.
Today, I’m using a cropped jacket and a dress that falls just below the knees to create a long, elegant line that is extended even further by my favorite red wedges. Because yes, although I am tall I love a good heel. So today I am a 6 foot tall pregnant woman. I don’t particularly know why this makes me laugh a little inside, but it does.

Cute outfit today! You know, I thought of your post yesterday as I was getting dressed this morning. I have just the complete opposite issue as you; I have mile-long legs and a short torso. People tell me I’m crazy when I use terms like “short-waisted” to describe myself, so perhaps I think my torso just looks short in comparison to my legs. It’s probably average in size, it’s just dwarfed by the stilts I call legs.
Long story short, I’m rocking a longer tunic top today to “borrow” length from my legs to add to my torso. I found this adorable organic cotton B&W striped Norma Kamali tunic-length top at Wally World for a mere $10 and paired it with my favorite ON black blazer. Hooray for the lesson on proportions!
This outfit really does emphasize your willowy-ness, beautiful!
This looks great! I love that you’re not afraid to play up your height. A lot of taller girls that I know stick to short heels and flats, but you’re proving that height can be quite an asset.
I am so glad you posted this simple, chic outfit. I have been wondering lately what you ladies would do if challenged to create outfits with minimal layering. It often seems that your outfits are carefully crafted with three or four layers, and I just don’t have those layering pieces in my wardrobe. Hopefully we can see more like this as the weather continues to warm. Thanks!
You look lovely. Those bright shoes do just the thing to make this flowing outfit pop a little. Sooo pretty!
Thanks, all!
@Emily – that outfit sounds super cute. I love how S. described this strategy in terms of “borrowing.” It’s like grade school but with your proportions.
@Sal – I cannot even tell you how happy it made me to be called “willowy.” I thought I would not hear that again until several months post-baby.
@zee – I know, we are all kind of compulsive layer-ers and belt-ers. But I like this idea of reader wardrobe challenges, such as creating a now-layered look. Hmmm… Shoot some other wonderings our way if you have them!
I love the jacket with the dress!
Im jealous of your belly, too cute!!! :)
I didn’t realise you were so tall but I suppose that is because you always dress in a way that makes you look in perfect proportion.
It’s really refreshing to read a post where someone emphasises their defining features, rather than hides them. To many magazines “conceal” nowadays – people like you can change that. It makes you look even better!
Well done and keep it up!
Just found your site and love it! Thanks for sharing all of the cute (and totally wear-able) fashion advice.
