Last night, the fiance, T., and I went out to dinner and a show. For my “date night” look, I pulled out this classic black dress that I also wore on the first day of teaching (and in my first post here). A. and I both own this dress because we found it for a steal at the Banana Republic outlet. You can dress it down for day, or add some heels and make it fit for a night out on the town. I was also inspired by the lovely Jean C’est Quoi to wear a scarf around my waist as a belt, as she did in this picture just recently. If I had to pare down my wardrobe to just a few key items, this classic black dress would definitely be one of them, as well as some scarves, which can be worn in so many ways and always add some interest to any outfit.

Hope your Saturday night was a lovely one as well!

Endnotes:
Yesterday was a real vacation day – no hidden articles in my beach bag! I spent half the day trying to add some color to my Midwestern skin and the other half the day walking around the port shops. I got lots of complements on my necklace from all of the port-side jewelers I visited. (Some new items to be premiered in the coming weeks!) I needed comfortable shoes that could get wet and could take me miles on my feet. I quickly exchanged these flip flops for a pair of less practical flats and added a cardigan before heading out to hear some live music.

I’ve added a detail of my incredible backdrop because it is much more beautiful than any outfit I could ever pull together!

  • Bella Band – birthday gift from A. and S.!

End Notes:

A. and S. very kindly gifted me with this Bella Band for my birthday, and none too soon. My mid-rise jeans will definitely no longer button, but this piece of stretchy amazingness will give me some more wear out of them until I really pop. So simple but so brilliant. This blue-and-yellow color combination (also worn by S. a few days ago) is one of my favorites, and allows me to pretend that spring is coming soon.

It may be early in the semester, but the way I see it, a break form academia is always a good idea. I am on the beach this week soaking up the sun and rejuvenating my brain! I’m glad I over packed for this trip and brought a few sweater options because it has been unseasonably cold here in the evenings. I love this bag because it looks like a carefree beach bag but I can secretly slip a file folder full of articles in it to read on the beach or pool side. – A.

Stacy and Clinton, of What Not to Wear on TLC, always talk about mixing patterns and how that’s ok when you’re sticking to the same color family. So I’ve been trying to experiment with that more without producing a schizophrenic looking outfit. I started small and timid – I paired this flowered chord skirt with striped knee socks. Baby steps. Baby steps. -S.

End Notes:

A few months ago, Lucky Magazine suggested stretching your closet by wearing “evening” items for day. While I’m not about to wear a taffeta ball skirt to class, I wanted to try the idea in a more pared-down way, so I matched this jet-beaded cardigan from my mother-in-law with a casual t-shirt and denim skirt. Does this count as postmodern style pastiche? The cardigan is demure, the tights and flats make me feel like a dancer, and the leather jacket adds just a bit of edge.

I’m reading this book for PLEASURE. As in, it’s not required reading, I’m not doing research on it, and no one’s expecting me to talk about it at a conference any time soon. It feels so WRONG. But I decided that this semester I would still read those books I enjoy and by authors I like to keep up with outside of my area of work. It’s still early in the semester, so we’ll see how long this healthy approach will last. -S.

I entered this picture in the weekly contest at weardrobe.com. This week’s look: Tights! If you’re not already familiar with this fabulous site, I recommend it for fun and inspirational browsing. The best part is that you can do a keyword search for an item and see all the different ways it has been worn by different members of weardrobe. The keyword search definitely appeals to the academic in me, and the site is certainly full of ‘chic’.

As for my tights look here: I layered a transparent black and white pinstripe pair over a bright pink pair. The top layer tones down the pink and adds a deeper texture to it. Check out weardrobe for more fun tights looks or submit an entry of your own! -S.

End Notes:
Today is my first day teaching my discussion sections, and, to be honest, I had a hard time getting dressed this morning. The little black dress may seem like a cop-out, but you can’t argue with a go-to classic when you’re having a wardrobe crisis. Though my impulse was to belt everything, I wanted to play with the softness of the sweater against the tailored lines of the dress. So, I pinned the cardigan into more of a cocoon shape and left it open. If my students were metaphorically inclined, perhaps they will think that I am structured-but-compassionate, firm-but-flexible. Or maybe that’s asking too much.   – e.

CFP*: Pregnant Style Bloggers?

January 20th, 2009 § 16 comments §

Since I began a baby bump and helped start this blog at roughly the same time, I’ve been fairly obsessed with trying to find stylish pregnant ladies to be my pregger fashion muses. With S. and A.’s help, I’ve found a few:

Of course Tricia, from Bits and Bobbins, Wardrobe Remix’s fearless leader. Then there’s the fashionable Spanish mama who continues to rock skinny jeans over at My Daily Style. And perhaps lesser known…

Juicy Juice, originally uploaded by freespiritjenny.

The spunky and colorful Freespiritjenny.

i will be that little glowing tree, originally uploaded by steen ink.

And how I wish the lovely SteenInk would have been able to post more of her wonderfully layered pregnancy looks.

But I’m wondering if there are more that I’m missing? There seems to be a preponderance of maternity fashion “advice” blogs — answering specific questions, pointing to celebrity styles, or recommending particular generic outfits — but I’d love to see how real, stylish ladies navigated the day-to-day of dressing a rapidly changing body. Do share.

* We get e-mails every single day with CFP’s or “Calls for Papers” from conferences on every topic imaginable soliciting 20 minute presentations from the academic masses. (Unfortunately, we still haven’t gotten one on academia and style.) When we do a CFP here, we’re asking for your contribution of internet-knowledge, no 10 page paper required. Just a few words or a link will do!
